Agreed, I took the Pitts Westbound exit @ Commonwealth yesterday and they do have the signs erected indicating a multi-lane roundabout.
For comparison, the Ruth Ave. bridge over Pitts is two lane (one in each direction), and it opens into a multi-lane roundabout on both sides of the bridge. The roundabout entry points become wider immediately after the bridge and allow for this configuration, which is the same situation as here.
If it's proven to be acceptable elsewhere, I see no reason why they couldn't have painted the lines, rather than leaving it up to the gen pop to decipher.
Anyway, it is what it is.
