Would the Maritimes have been better off in the USA?
Perhaps, but perhaps not. I mean, Maine isn't exactly jammed with people, despite covering a greater land area than either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.
Halifax and Saint John had served as the Eastern Ports for Canada for centuries, even after the St. Lawrence Seaway was built. What need would these places have served in an American context given the existence of Portland and Boston?
