I have posted at great length on why the Weston, Sobey and Pattison families will not be opening such a store in downtown Winnipeg ever. It comes down to the razor thin margins and the shift of the industry away from in person shopping to a fulfilment centre model.

Unless someone like trueviking is putting their own money on the table to open something like a franchised NoFrills this is deader that the prospect of the original Winnipeg Jets returning to the city to give us a second NHL team.

A franchise discount banner like NoFrills (as you mentioned), IGA or FreshCo would be the only realistic hope of a grocery store in D/T Winnipeg.

No Frills would probably be my bet. The NoFrills on Notre Dame between Isabel & Sherbrooke is in a pretty rough part of town, 2 or 3 security guards every day, is significantly large, and seems to be doing just fine. And with True North being the building owners, I think they'll have stuff planned out ok.

I think different people have a different understandings of what counts as a "major grocery store." I think it will probably be something comparable to the Family Foods on Donald. Maybe a FoodFare or Co-Op.

True North has clearly stated that the redevelopment will include a grocery store. From their website:

"The central core of the redevelopment will include neighbourhood services and retail, a full-scale grocery store, and public spaces."

19,000 ft2 is far larger than Family Foods on Donald St. It shall be a Midsized store. My guess is IGA, Freshco or No Frills. I don't think Foodfare would want something that large. a few times larger than their average store. Freshco on Sargent & No Frills on Notre Dame make a go of it in a high crime area..Somehow they will make this work. Co-op usually has larger stores but who knows?

Honestly, I can see them putting in a Save-On-Foods. I've seen the smaller scale ones in other places like Vancouver and Toronto, and they're nice and set up well with just about the essentials you'd need from a grocery store.

Love the smaller, urban-sized grocers. Just what you need, no huge store to navigate, in and out quicker. Perfect for downtowners.

I saw something on the news tonight that Forks North Portage are taking the time capsule back to the Forks property for safekeeping.

It will be opened in 2062 as originally envisioned. I don't expect to be around to see how the contents made out.

You meant Sobeys. I have seen and shopped in them as well..Save-On-Foods does not exist out east.

theres a grocery store on donald

what we need is something like it by or in the exchange wait there is asian markets near that end of downtown

Always amazes me how some folks not only cling to their bleak visions, but demand that everyone else share them. It seems like such a waste of time.

It's not Sobeys. There is only one Sobeys in BC and it's located in Invermere. There are no small scale Safeway stores in the Lower Mainland. Thrifty Foods perhaps?

399 Graham is slated for a 32 unit upgrade / retrofit as well.
