Edelweiss’ new non-stop Halifax – Zurich route is airborne!

The Halifax – Zurich route operates twice weekly on its Airbus A340-300 aircraft which seats 314 passengers in business and economy classes. This flight is bookable on Air Canada as Edelweiss is part of the Lufthansa Group (Star Alliance).

Edelweiss Air in May 2026 will switch to an Airbus A350-900, instead of the A340-300 on the Halifax-Zurich route.

The new International Connections Facility (ICF) is now open:

Connecting Made Easy as 1-2-3 New Facility at Halifax Stanfield Simplifies International-to-Domestic Travel

July 2, 2025

Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) has opened its new International Connections Facility (ICF), a key infrastructure project that will streamline passenger experience, expand cargo capacity, facilitate trade, and contribute to regional economic growth.

The new space allows international passengers on select flights who are connecting to domestic flights to move through the airport without exiting the secure area and reclaiming baggage. This will allow for shorter connections and more time to enjoy the airport’s amenities. The facility will also enable further expansions of aircraft belly cargo space, supporting the movement of goods between Nova Scotia and International markets.

Renovations to the ground floor of the existing International Arrivals area will continue through 2025. The area will be refreshed, and once complete, the full facility will support both increased passenger traffic and cargo capacity while enhancing Halifax Stanfield’s position as Atlantic Canada’s key gateway.

The ICF project was made possible due to the generous support of Transport Canada and the Government of Nova Scotia, who contributed $8.3 million and $3 million, respectively.

It was odd in that just like the picture above, it showed only an empty room with lots of space for passengers to stand, line up and wait just like an airplane on a taxiway, not any people who had to actually make use of it describing their experience. Ms. Carter was unable to clearly explain what advantages it had over the existing Customs Hall nearby or what benefits it beings to passengers. As seems to be the case for airports everywhere, it requires passengers to walk significant distances to then stand in long lines. I get that airports tend to have great distances to move through them since it is the nature of the genre, but HIAA has never seen fit to mitigate that with moving sidewalks like many other airports or other passenger aids AFAIK.

This appears to be the same system used in Keflavik airport in Iceland. The queue line is for CBSA staff….their desks are at the back of the room if you look closely.

If you are not leaving the airport but only switching to a domestic flight, you proceed through this room and then go directly to the domestic departure area.

It looks like HIAA wants to do the same thing as Keflavik…be a junction point for international flights….ie. like the most recent flights announced going to Zurich, Spain, etc

Her explanation seems extremely clear to me. Expedited international connections. The new connections facility is on the departures level (less walking!). The existing customs hall couldn't do that as it's on the arrivals level.

Direct quote from the video:

"If your connecting from Halifax onto another airport in the country.....You do not have to collect your bags and you don't have to leave the secure area. You're going to be able to continue on your journey without having to be rescreened."

Unfortunately there are no connecting flights from Halifax to anywhere else in the Maritimes (except for a somewhat inconvenient PASCAN connection to Saint John). PAL should really think about stepping in to fill this void.

If Halifax views it's destiny as the Keflavik of North America, and becoming a trans Atlantic hub for elsewhere in Canada and the US, then this could be a worthwhile investment.

The most interesting thing out of the interview for me was the revelation that transborder traffic is up double digit percentage points year over year.

That certainly tracks with the loads that I've been seeing as a regular flyer on AC2562/2563 (BOS) and UA3537/3531 (EWR) these past few months.

Which for me, begs the question: If you're connecting to a non-international airport without Customs, when do your bags get checked? And assuming they get inspected somewhere at HIAA, what happens if Customs has questions?

The airport your connecting to in Canada doesn't matter whether it has customs or not. When a passenger arrives (steps off the plane) in Halifax on an international flight from a different country, they always MUST clear Canadian Customs at their First Port of Arrival.

If they are here to connect onto another flight elsewhere in Canada the new facility holds the passengers checked bag until the passenger is cleared by CBSA. They would have passenger checked bags pulled for secondary inspection if necessary.

Here is an example:
