Diversification is key. But I didn’t interpret it to be a build out of Canadas Oil and gas infrastructure to reach the global demand.

Check that…

This is a better read with better quotes from Carney’s announcement, which is actually quite encouraging:

Can you please identify what demand would exist beyond our borders on the Atlantic side where Europe can source non-heavy, less ghg intense, conventional crude oil from the middle east for less? Or even Norwegian oil. Pardon the pun, but this seems like a pipe dream. ‘Ethical oil’ loses its lustre when the EU applies environmental criteria to the equation.

The Herald wrote it as copy, but the Globe quotes Carney directly:

Quote:
"...To build the strongest economy in the G7 we need to develop both clean energy and the lowest carbon conventional energy...
He seems to differentiate between clean energy and conventional energy.

EDIT: Yes, we seem to be looking at the same reports.

There are ways to make Canadian oil "clean".

The oil sands operations require a lot of steam. You have three choices, (1) burn oil, (2) burn natural gas, or (3) build a nuclear power plant.

If your in the business of oil, then burning oil is easy. Burning natural gas to make steam involves piping in natural gas.

If you want to dramatically reduce your carbon footprint you build a nuclear power plant next to your oil sands operation, the steam is a waste product of the nuclear generating system. You don't even see a hit on electricity production. That concept has been floated by the Canadian nuclear industry for decades.

The other factor is if you mine the "oil sands" using conventional techniques or use steam injection.

Generally that industry has reduced its CO2e footprint by around 40% over the last 30 years.

On the LNG front, the process of running cryogenic equipment to liquifying natural gas into LNG is energy intensive. Traditional LNG plants burn natural gas to generate electricity to run the process. LNGCanada is unique in they basically are buying electricity from BC Hydro. Turns out BC Hydro was in the process of building the Cite-C dam so "overnight" was going to have a lot of extra power.

Diversification is mostly a pipe dream. We have a near limitless source of expensive to develop but profitable energy. More than all but a handful of other countries and a substantial amount per capita. In terms of clean energy we have a highly educated but expensive workforce. Huge amounts of land but in most areas our comparative advantage is not in clean energy. We can massively subsidize it but unless that leads to first mover advantage that is an economically unstainable path.

Carney is more likely to let us develop more oil and gas to prevent what looks to be a substantial decline in our standard of living. Should this threat disappear he is unlikely to do so to see us make gains. Ideally he might push through projects letting us get our energy to market remove all caps and tax the sector with proceeds spent on productive clean energy projects. More likely he will fold at the first resistance.

There has been a lot of chatter among the mods about the lack of decorum in this particular thread. We have been very lenient, for a long time, but that only seems to have encouraged the bad behaviour.

Henceforth, insulting someone's intelligence, or telling them to Fuck off, or something similar, will result in the above consequences, at the very least. There are a few posts of this nature still standing in this thread (notwithstanding the signalling that should have accompanied the massive cleanup and the temporary thread closure). These will be dealt with in due course.

My take was his remarks had very little, to nothing, to do with Carney, and more about "dismissing" Poilievre like so many others he "dismisses". Brushing Pierre off like a nothing because he doesn't worship at the alter of Trump in Trump's mind. "He doesn't like Trump and I don't care who wins, but he would probably win if he liked Trump, but since he doesn't like Trump he won't do well, which I don't care about. In fact I can probably work better with the Liberal, if I cared at all, which I don't", to paraphrase. He didn't exactly heap praise on Carney. I get why Conservatives are latching on to this, and for sure the Liberals would do the same or worse if Trump had appeared to endorse Pierre as that's what politics is, but it definitely didn't come across as any kind of endorsement or show of love for Carney.

As for the Felon's comments about the Canadian leadership candidates; IMO, the reactions are more based on what the candidates have done and less on what the Felon has said.

The Felon has a long history of basically parotting whatever the last person to speak to him has said. So if someone said "it would be better for our chances to try to support Carney" he'd likely do it.

But ultimately, PP has run a campaign that is obviously based on the Felon's campaign style, though he's been trying to shake that more recently. He's also unequivacally on the same side politically speaking as the Felon, so it would be expectant for the Felon to come out in support of PP.

Carney's campaign style is very different, fewer attack adds and more focused on what he plans to do. And he's also very opposite to the Felon's side politically. Frankly, the Felon's "Endorsement" of Carney is basically as fake as a 3$ bill in any currency. The Felon endorsing Santa Claus as the next PM of Canada would ring more truthful than endorsing Carney.

More generally speaking, and I noted this on the Atlantic Political thread; I'm a bit surprise that radio ads seem to have disappeared, at least here in Fredericton. A few weeks ago, "Carbon Tax Carney" was regularly played on the radio (I listen to a Bell station every day for most of the day). Carney had some counter ads going. But now, I can't recall the last time I heard an ad for either side. Maybe they're waiting for closer to the debates to do another blitz or something. I also haven't heard a peep from any of the local candidates in Freddy on the radio; just seeing their signs up around time. (Or rather the Green, CPC and LPC candidate signs.)

I think I've noticed some ads on TV in passing; but I FF/Skip ads on TV so I haven't really seen them. And FB on my phone is feeding me Carney ads too; I think I've X'ed enough PP ads for the algorithm to stop offering them to me. (Adblock/UBlock has managed to kill all the ads on my desktop FB browsing at least)

I think Trump knows that he's majorly messed up the US economy, and globally here. Carney has had experience dealing with billionaires and all kinds of difficult people in the global financial industry, academia, and government with massive egos. He's perfectly suited for dealing with Trump, and I think Trump is ultimately going to seek out Carney's opinions and advice on how to fix the mess he has created.

Carney might be one of the few people in the world Trump might actually listen to, unlike Trudeau who he didn't respect. I don't think Trump views Pierre Poilievre as any sort of expert on economics and finance, and sees him as just some typical Canadian version of a Republican politician. Carney, however, isn't a politician, he's an economist, and has real world experience in economics and finance, that Trump respects. I don't think Trump respects Poilievre, and that would hurt Canada in its negotiations with the United States.

Since Carney made it clear that he wouldn't talk with Trump until he stopped it with all the 51st state stuff, and other insults to Canada's sovereignty, there hasn't been a single tweet or post about making Canada the 51st state. To me, it demonstrates that Carney is the right guy to deal with Trump... a far better option than Pierre or Justin. I think a lot of CPC supporters believe in a false assumption that Trump and the Republicans have an affinity with the Conservative Party of Canada, and care about what happens in Canada beyond what the US gets out of the relationship... because they don't.

Trump is a big TV guy... it's said his staffers have to make videos on pressing issues for the White House, because he doesn't read the memos that come across his desk. He's seen Carney and Poilievre on tv, and he's maybe even watched the Daily Show interview. There's a pretty stark difference in the personalities of Carney and Poilievre. There might not be a single world leader, irrespective of their respective ideologies, that would pick having to deal with Pierre Poillievre, instead of Mark Carney, if all they had to go on was a few hours of video clips of the two Canadian leaders.

The point is, we want a Prime Minister that Trump actually wants to negotiate with... and not only do we need a good negotiator for Trump, we need a good negotiator for the rest of the world. The UK, the EU, and partners across the Asia Pacific Region would all overwhelmingly deal with a Canada led by Mark Carney, due to his calm demeanour and his extensive economic expertise. Pierre Poilievre is globally irrelevant, and he's an easy target for mockery and parody. I don't think Pierre Poilievre would be taken seriously as a world leader, as his style is way too adversarial, and I think he would embarrass Canada on the global stage.

Carney is the type of Prime Minister that makes other countries listen more seriously to what Canada has to say. JT might have been globally popular, but he was never globally influential. Carney has the potential to be both.

Poilievre would never be the leader that other countries respect. Even former staffers call him anti charisma

Maybe he'd get along with Viktor Orbán.

I was listening to Scott Galloway's episode with Ian Bremmer this morning on my way in to work and Ian talked about how influential and well-respected Carney is globally, singling out Macron and Lagarde in particular as two leaders who hold him in high regard.

I'm not entirely clear on Trump's position on Carney, if he even has one. My interpretation of his last statements were that people close to him said that the Conservatives needed to be able to claim some distance between themselves and Trump and so he said he likes Carney. If asked today, would he even remember there's an election here?

In a scenario where he's creating trade battles with every country on earth, wouldn't he rather a weak, sycophantic opponent?

100% this.

Drumpf saying he preferred Carney as PM was just Drumpfian deflection and political maneuvering . As you said, PP's biggest problem is that he is viewed (rightfully) as a Drumpfian stooge and sycophant.

The vast majority of Canadians know that Drumpf is a pathological liar, a bully and a cheat. They know that if Drumpf says he prefers Carney, this really means he wants PP - a man he can control.

Canada is a linchpin nation of the developing rebel alliance. Carney as PM will be one of the senior leaders of the rebel alliance. Carney must be our next PM.

Pierre's treatement of mainstream media yesterday is absolutely deplorable.

His "handlers" keep them completly separated - there is no opportunity for them to hear what he is saying, to ask him off the cuff questions, etc.

Fake and scripted.

I'd actually say he has gotten worse than Trump.

We can't speak for Trump, but 4 years is a long time, and I think Trump would far rather there be a PM in Canada who's expert economic advice he can seek, rather than a conservative sloganeer, as he tries to clean up the mess he's created in the US and global economy.

I can only speak of myself, and as a Canadian. I trust Carney to negotiate a good deal for Canada with Trump... while I don't trust Poilievre to even know what a good deal would look like.

As for the bolded, I'm not convinced Trump and the Republicans particularly care about the political fortunes of the Conservative Party of Canada. Trump seems to say whatever he wants to say personally, and it really seems like Carney did a decent job at keeping the call respectful, productive, and even hopeful. Trump's statements about their phone call didn't strike me as something carefully orchestrated and co-coordinated by CPC and GOP spin doctors...

Video Link

To me, it sounded like Trump's thoughts on the call with Carney were genuinely positive, which isn't too surprising given Carney's personality, and Trump's personal dislike of Trudeau.

It's a good for Canada in the long run, if Trump likes Carney more than he dislikes him. Poilievre is highly unlikeable, he's not an economic expert, and I don't think he'll get nearly as good of a deal for Canada from Trump as Carney will end up getting for us.

You're assuming Drumpf actually cares about the mess he is creating. He is a sociopath. He doesn't care.

The only thing Herr Drumpf cares about is his golf game..........

Personally, I hope that if Carney wins, he puts off any official between Leaders talks with Washington off as long as possible. Let the ministers and minions do the talking. But don't call the Felon, nor visit him. For optics it would be great if the first time they actually meet in person was in Alberta for the G7 conference in June.

Instead Carney should do his first few official state visits over to London and Paris and Berlin and other EU stops (maybe even Kyiv if safety can be arranged), to further build up the foundation of the "Rebel Alliance" solution.
