Dion didn't understand the question even when his handlers translated it into French for him off camera.

I have no issue with a carbon tax if only liberal and NDP voters are required to pay it.

Yes, it was Steve Murphy.

I've watched it several times and I don't think he was setting up Stéphane Dion. That's just the way the interview went.

I also don't think it's an unreasonable requirement for someone who wants to be the Prime Minister of Canada to be able to understand any question posed in English, and put together a comprehensible answer in that language.

I think it is becoming clearer and clearer that the CPC would do the same things that Trump is doing in the US here in Canada. On the weekend Pierre was again going on about passports, too woke, and blaming Carney for everything Trudeau did. He very much sounds like Musk/Trump.

Anaida seems to be doing more and more of the speaking, social media posts (full of gaslighting and misinformation). Is she running or Pierre?

Consumer carbon tax is not here any more.

The industrial carbon tax, at that point is like every other tax out there. It goes to the government, the government spends it on services. We debate the values of one form or taxation over another however it is still paid by the same people at the end of the day.

Good example, in Alberta there is a royalty tax on oil extraction. Money from that goes to pay to services. Since they have these high royalties they don't need to charge sales tax. One industry is paying more than the other industries as a result. Good or bad?

As for the debate on economic growth vrs protecting the environment. This is not a black and white issue. No party (with perhaps the exception of the Greens) is proposing we stop all growth. The issue is how do we balance the two.

♫It's the most wonderful time every four years!♫

Politicians love making promises that they never keep, except me. I'm Santa Claus. You trust me to enter into your homes, why not trust me in parliament?

My platform

Abolish the law of gravity
Who passed the law of gravity? No one. Isaac Newton forced it upon us in 1665, in an undemocratic manner. A Rhino Party government will abolish this unjust law. If Canadians want gravity, they should elect MPs to MAYBE decide to make it a thing, only if the MPs want to. Like a real democracy. Don't like it? Email your MP, that'll totally show them!

Christmas Everyday
We're going to make the elves work around the clock to give everyone Christmas presents every day. After all, unions are only useful when they benefit you, personally. Think of all the presents if we bust those elf unions!

Rhinoceros Stimulation
Inflation has been tough on Canadians. Naturally, a Rhino government will give out a free stimulus to combat inflation. Unlike money, which can be inflated, inflating a rhinoceros is animal cruelty. So, no one would dare do it. As such, I am confident that giving everyone a free rhinoceros will not only help struggling Canadians, but will also have zero inflationary consequences.

No, I'm not buying votes by giving people free exotic animals. How dare you say that.

I'm surprised people are actually buying into the whole "anti-semitism on campus" nonsense as that is just a bad faith attack on pro-human rights protesters. Obviously anti-semitism is real and you can find it to some degree anywhere, but defenders of Israel's genocide have been weaponizing the term to attack anyone who criticizes Israel's far right government. But obviously criticizing a government for it's actions does not make one anti-semetic. Especially considering how many Jewish people, both Israeli and non-Israeli alike, have condemned Netanyahu's brutality.

Don't ask people not to debate a topic. Just stop making debatable assertions. Problem solved.

Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.

You really going to deny the lived experiences of thousands of Jews across Canada?

Just a reminder that Jewish children's schools, synagogues, and businesses have been firebombed literally dozens of times over the last year in Canada. Not sure why this was brought up in the federal election thread, though, unless you're thinking about the Liberal candidate in Edmonton who was dropped for praising Hamas and Hezbollah, among other reprehensible comments.

I guess there are probably some subtle nuances in "Mort à Israël / Mort aux Juifs!" that I am missing.

I warned this forum that O’Toole wasn’t calling the shots, the extremist UCP style western oil & gas lobbyists were. And sure enough they fomented an inner party insurrection cause he had the gall to say hydrocarbons were fuelling Climate Change and that it is a real problem. Then they sacked him and replaced him with Poilievre whose only election platform was Axe the Carbon Tax! At this point the Conservatives should just rename themselves to the Petroleum Club.

It will be up to the people of Alberta to boot her out of office.
Your comments are quite rich given how much your home province needs to slurp on the equalization teet to survive.

It's a huge difference. These protestors also chant from the river to the sea which is basically an incitement to genocide but being anti Israel is acceptable speech. I am not sure we need to give people student visas or the like but certainly you should be able to make all sorts of outlandish claims about Israel just as pro Russians make them about Ukraine starting the war or killing civilians or whatever.

It's surprising we are not seeing it be made into an election issue as it was in the states.

So we have some announcements from the watchdog....

Security officials report a Beijing-linked online operation is targeting Carney

Federal security officials say they've found an online information operation linked to the Chinese government that has targeted Liberal Leader Mark Carney.

The Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections Task Force says it traced the operation to Youli-Youmian, the most popular news account on the social media platform WeChat.

Intelligence reports link the Youli-Youmian account to the Chinese Communist Party's central political and legal affairs commission.

Probably because when people are watching their retirement funds get flushed in the toilet they're more concerned about someone fixing that than they are the statements about Israel from a small but vocal group of people.

^ This is the type of divisive post that we do not need in this country. I apologise for singling you out, but this is a perfect example of what Trump and the MAGA cult write and say daily. I mean what more proof do you need to realise that Nero is fiddling, when Rome is burning? After all Trump and his cult have done to us and the World, I cannot believe there are people who are still parroting this MAGA garbage.

As for complaining about antisemitism, this happens to all groups. Personally I have witnessed far more anti-Islam, and anti-Asian sentiment. The Jewish state is engaged in genocide, killing innocent people (women, children, journalists, first responders, etc),. Many of us are growing tired of the "antisemitic" whine, for the horrible crimes the Israeli Government is committing in Gaza.

As far as I am concerned, I am 100% in favor of boycotting Israeli products, and stopping any aid to Israel. It may be in our best interests to recognise the State of Palestine. Politically speaking, now that we are no longer allies with the USA, it may be in Canada's best interest to form closer ties to Muslim countries. Cutting ties with Israel, which is actively engaged in genocide is the right thing to do, in terms of morality.

They had an interview with Nic Nanos who explained his thinking on the poll numbers (43% to 37% lead for the Liberals).

Then flipped to Global BC news where they talked about a widening Liberal poll lead (IPSOS) now in double digits - 46 to 34%. So your view of momentum is very much influenced by what newscast your watching as they don't mention other polling firm results.

I checked out CTV news's website and as of an hour ago their top three news stories are:

- Liberals’ lead over Conservatives narrows to six points, as NDP reaches a ‘numeric low’

- Will Mark Carney’s early missteps cost him crucial votes?

- Former deputy police chief replaces Chiang as Liberal candidate in Toronto riding

So what gives? Is CTV biased or Conservative leaning or is this just a coincidence of using their polling numbers with negative news stories for the Liberals?
Others have already pointed it out, but some networks and polling agencies have contracted agreements, where said network will only report poll numbers from that agency. CTV and Nanos have had a longstanding relationship for a number of years; Ipsos is currently partnered with Global, though I don't know how long that's been going on. Abacus is partnered with The Star and will release some polls a day early through them. Pollara is taking an unconventional approach and releasing polling data exclusively to "The Curse of Politics" podcast.

I don't watch CTV News so I really don't know how they lean. Nanos has typically been a more Liberal-friendly polling agency though.

CBC has no such agreements, so they can report on everything should they so choose. Eric Grenier is running their poll tracker right now.

I don't think many of the pro Hamas protestors have retirement accounts, certainly not the ones on campus. It is a one issue election though for sure.

With oil prices in the toilet will be interesting to see how Alberta fairs... based on past narratives, the global oil price collapse will be rest of Canada and Carney's fault...
