Team lost because people didn't agree with their positions, any other excuse is just that. As for seniors, they got to go into a priority lane, which at my polling station took maybe all of 20 minutes, and to assume the majority of them voted for Team is more revealing about your mindset.

Mostly happy about Maloney replacing Boyle on council, but I can't say I'm too pleased about Orr getting in. I think there's been a lot of misinformation unjustly claiming that the two of them are both similar "progressive" candidates. One is a progressive urbanist. The other is Jean Swanson 2.0.

I didn’t say that it would t have made a difference to the outcome but undoubtedly many voters fave up in the face of ridiculous line-ups. What i saw is the very elderly or physically challenged allowed to bypass the line but not standard Boomers.

It still doesn’t explain why pro-density voters would desert the party that basically removed most of the checks on building everywhere, which was something COPE has never been known for supporting.

Yeah if he remains as outspoken as he has been, he will only remind people why ABC was elected in a landslide in the first place.

Consensus among Orr voters is that he's "better" than Swanson (because... reasons?); I'm willing to hold judgement until he starts voting down all market housing and handing out free drugs.

I think he might be better on the housing file but will absolutely be for handing out free drugs, keeping the police out of the DTES, and the rest of that agenda.

He will make people remember why they elected ABC in the first place.

Sim and friends have been bungling their way through a lot of things. They haven't solved the problems they were elected to solve, but those problems are still issues for the voters.

I really didnt want to vote for the twitter flamewar police union guy or the bland millionaire who ostensibly hates lgbt. They don't strike me as having much of a forward facing build-baby-build approach as the two councillors we got, IE Lucy Maloney:

Quote:
As area plans go, the Broadway Plan surely is ambitious: nearly 140 projects in the development pipeline, representing tens of thousands of units. It is not a secret that Vancouver suffers from a profound shortage of housing, and more homes are a good thing.

But the Broadway Plan area is full of renters, many of whom live in low-rise apartment buildings with relatively affordable rents thanks to long tenures.

An area resident may be forgiven for thinking: yes, we need housing. But why does all of it have to be built here?

The answer is a simple one. Under mayor Ken Sim, with only a few exceptions, like the area around certain Skytrain stations, it’s only legal to build a new apartment building on top of an older one. And there are lots of apartment buildings in the Broadway Corridor.

To be fair to Sim, this has been the status quo in Vancouver for a long time. But he’s defended that status quo.

Former OneCity councillor Christine Boyle tabled a motion to allow rental and non-market housing in Shaughnessy—which, despite its reputation, has some of the lowest land values in the city, per square foot. Sim rejected it out of hand, despite Shaughnessy declining in population while the rest of Vancouver increased—and despite the opportunity the motion offered to let more people live in a leafy, healthy neighbourhood near jobs, transit and greenspace.

More ambitious housing policy, like legalizing small apartments everywhere in Vancouver, would likely also be rejected by the mayor and his ABC party.
Besides that, i was pretty bitter ABC dumped the english bay beach master plan for little else than petty contempt for the parks board and wanting to bring back a lane on beach ave for the sake of out-of-towner pleasure drivers

We will just have to see what the report card looks like next year for Maloney and Orr. I don't doubt it will be similar to this one.

Boyle and Swanson were not the same. Neither will Maloney and orr.

The whole antisemitic drive by on Orr seems a bit amateurish. But I mean I found this comment more strange in a 2010 column in Scout Magazine

Perhaps its more about this: Campbell approval rating lowest of any BC premier ever. At this point, Campbell could kill and eat a Jewish baby and still get re-elected. Meanwhile James Risks All by playing nice.
Is "eat a Jewish baby" some common saying in some part of Canada that I'm not aware of?

This attack on Orr is overdone, but his social media is generally a cringe mess. I'm curious if he tones it down or remains a lightning rod and a distraction.

Big yikes:

"Not sure if you noticed, but we’ve had a fat, creepy cowboy as Prime Minister for a while now. "

Glad I didn't vote for that clown

Again associating Harper with cowboys is pretty straight forward. But again explain "eating Jewish babies" and Gordon Campbell?

I wonder if the mayor still thinks Bitcoin Bro' is a winning persona?

Vancouver mayor's bitcoin push a 'hill that I’m willing to die on'
Ken Sim: ‘We have a fiduciary duty to do what's right for the City of Vancouver’
Mike Howell

Mayor Ken Sim says his continued push to have Vancouver become a bitcoin-friendly city is “a hill that I’m willing to die on” as he awaits a city staff report on whether the digital currency could one day be integrated into the City of Vancouver’s financial strategies and systems.

Since he successfully introduced his motion to council in December, Sim has been on a crusade of sorts in making people understand his motivation behind what for many is a complex and mystifying concept...

....Sim’s speech happened to come the day before the April 5 council byelection.

The mayor’s party, ABC Vancouver, had a table set up in the lobby outside the ballroom of the event and the party’s two candidates — Jaime Stein and Ralph Kaisers — got some microphone time.

“Is it the end of the world if these two incredible individuals don't get elected?” Sim said before introducing Stein and Kaisers as supporters of the crypto community.

“No, but I'll tell you what's at stake: We put the industry behind by at least a year-and-a-half, and as we know in this industry, things are moving at the speed of light.”

It was an odd comment coming from a mayor whose party had held seven of the 11 seats on council before the byelection. The year-and-a-half reference is the time left until the 2026 general civic election....

That year and half comment is bonkers. It's one thing for him personally to boost BTC as mayor (which I still think is patently ridiculous and would anger me if I lived in Vancouver, but if that's how he wants to occupy himself while in office, he can do what he likes, I guess), but here my only reading of this is that ABC as a party is Team Crypto and therefore not electing ABC councillors in a by-election is....detrimental to city operations and long-term planning vis-à-vis the crypto industry???

If that's the hill he's willing to die on, then I guess he will die.

Maybe Sim is learning being Mayor isn't all it's cracked up to be, and he's already looking beyond the next election (that he will lose).

If you look at the bitcoin price history, it basically follows the market like everything else. It's not at all what crypto bros keep saying it is.

Well over a year out nd things are already getting interesting:

Former ABC campaign manager Kareem Allam to run for mayor of Vancouver in 2026
Kenneth Chan
Jun 9 2025

Kareem Allam is the first candidate to announce his bid for mayor of Vancouver in the October 2026 civic election.

“I’ve effectively made the decision to run. And so, I’m in the race,” Allam told Daily Hive Urbanized in an interview on Monday afternoon.

A seasoned political strategist, Allam is known for leading the successful campaigns of Kevin Falcon’s BC Liberals (now BC United) leadership race and Mayor Ken Sim’s ABC Vancouver party’s landslide victory in the October 2022 civic election. After ABC’s win, he served as the Chief of Staff for Sim’s Mayor’s Office for about four months, until February 2023.

He also ran Erin O’Toole’s federal Conservative leadership campaign, and currently serves as a consultant for government, First Nations, and other entities....

... Allam’s decision underscores a sharp shift from his previous alliances, as he now goes up against his former boss and further distances himself from ABC.

He has been highly publicly critical of Sim and ABC for more than a year, previously going as far as endorsing select candidates running against ABC in the recent Vancouver City Council by-election, which saw ABC’s candidates trailing considerably behind other major party candidates....

He was quite vocal on CBC Radio this morning. Said he believes Ken Sim "doesn't take the job seriously" and that he would not only have very different specific policies (e.g. bring back the renter's liaison office) but also bring a different style and approach to being Mayor (not weirdly pumping crypto at events in an official mayoral capacity, for example). For someone outside council, this would be run of the mill discourse, but this kind of criticism towards a candidate coming from that former candidate's campaign manager is really quite something.

I thought he sounded kind of amateur to be honest, saying he wanted to be mayor and could do a good job, but also felt that other people currently on council (Pete Fry for example) could do it better than him. Sometimes fresh energy is good though, and I'm not a Sim fan, so who knows.
