You incentivize shooting at the police in order to escape and you ruin a lot of lives of people who make a few mistakes and would return to a productive life if given the chance. But most crime is committed by habitual offenders so it absolutely makes us all safer. Tradeoffs.
Everyone who doesn't actually kill someone eventually gets a second chance even under a strict "law and order" régime.

The real question is who is deserving of more consideration from the system: the criminal who is looking for a second chance or their hypothetical innocent Victim #2 (or 3, 4 or 5) who has never done anything in their lives and is just minding their own business.

That's where a lot of people think the system is dangerously out of sync.

Conservatives have now tossed four candidates, the Liberals three.
My bet of 10 this campaign is looking better and better. Maybe the NDP will step up.

Again I ask who is giving him these policy ideas and is he thinking critically about them at all? This has all the hallmarks of living in a bubble.
We've heard about Canada taking on a global leadership role for decades now. Remember Harper and Trudeau's pitches for a security council seat? Remember "Canada's back"? Our international relationships are in tatters after the last Butts/Telford acolyte, so I'm not particularly optimistic that their chosen successor will have any more success when he promises the same thing.

The CBC article you've linked here is over 3 years old at this point. You have a tendency to regurgitate whatever pops up on your social media feed without doing even the most basic due diligence. Has PP said anything recently about Bitcoin? My search shows nothing. Please post it here if he has.

I used the search term “violent crime” because that is what you stated in your post.
Check the other link I posted with full details on various types of violent crimes.

Maybe don't take your AI search results at face value.

Western North America has always had higher property crime than the east.

Canada has usually had higher property crime than the US.

I leave the reasons for you to determine but these are established historical statistics.

At this point, the NDP has become so irrelevant that a candidate of the party could literally film themselves shooting a puppy, and nobody would report on it.

Google AI is horrible. But this seems to be from Statista. It includes utterring threats and other harassments issues for Canada.

Comparing violent crime is difficult. Homicide is the easiest to compare as there is little room for interpretation. Sweden famously has one the highest rates of sexual assaults and thus violent crime because a dispute in a relationship is now defined as 400 sexual assaults' by their ex partner. Canada would call that one, if at all.

You didn’t google search the search I did I suppose… anyway, Here’s the source AI got it from:

There's probably a "statistic" somewhere that claims Asians are actually the worst at math. Anyone who thinks Canada has more violent crime than the US is trolling or not playing with a full deck. And as always, it's the MAGAs who traffic in this nonsense

The homicide rate is not all encompassing, but it is a pretty good proxy for violent crime. Police don't miss many murders.

Homicide Rate Canada: 1.76 per 100,000

Homicide Rate U.S.A.: 4.96 per 100,000

Putting the U.S. rate at 2.8x the Canadian Rate.

Source: https://www.datapandas.org/ranking/violent-crime-rates-by-country

Violent Crime Rate - 99.5 (per 100,000)

Source:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_C...cide%2C%20104%20fewer%20than%20in%202022.

Violent Crime Rate U.S. 364 per 100,000

Source FBI

Overall rate: U.S rate is 3.66x more violent.

You should write to Statista to tell them their numbers a F’d, to go look to Wikipedia and update their records.

There are some gatekeepers keeping houses from being built for no reason other than they are evil bureaucrats. Forcing cities to stop doing this will mean every 30 something can buy their own suburban house. They won't need to change their lifestyle or save. Best of all Boomers will still be able to sell their homes at current rates. Best of both worlds.

Smith has crushed the Tory campaign. She is bound and determined to get Carney elected so her separatists ideals are more palatable to Albertans. Now Manning chimes in to put the final nail in the coffin.

Do Albertans want to separate?.......I don't think so and I think any referendum would fail by a decent margin but not an overwhelming one. No separatists expect a win in the first referendum, it's simply to big a gamble for most. However, the chances of winning a second referendum are much higher.

We saw this in Quebec. The first referendum was 60 to 40 "NON". The second one, however, was a razor thin at 51 to 49. Why the big difference? The reason is simple, the first referendum put the fear of God into people who wanted to stay in Canada and hence left the province. This meant that in the second referendum, many of those opposing independence had left leaving pro-separatists with a much higher percentage of the population. This would be even more so in Alberta. Relatively few Canadians moved to Quebec while Alberta has always been a magnet for Canadians for jobs and a higher standard of living..........they make up a far higher percentage of the population that would rebuke the idea and head back to their home provinces leaving Alberta with a far higher percentage of the population who want to succeed.

In order for a movement to really take off, it often needs a one-time event to give the movement momentum.........the proverbial straw that broke the camels back and Smith has found that with a Carney win. Smith is no friend of Canada but she is even less of one to PP.

In fact a lot don't get a second chance. You can get dragged along for one robbery and be sentenced for life without parole if someone dies. But even without a death a 5 year mandatory minimum sentence for something using a gun. Can be life ending for a 18 or 19 year old.

We can't have Pre-Crime but if you viscously beat someone unprovoked it's pretty clear you will do it again. A lot of times there are mental health and addiction issues involved which makes our system defer blame. In fact if we are thinking about victim 2 3 4 5 that should be an aggravating factor.

The Con approach in Canada is a pretty mild move towards protecting the public over criminals.

Or you could thank Northern Light for finding the more accurate info.

And not use AI backed search results of aggregators like Statista. They didn't do the research they just copy and pasted someone else's (sloppy or misleading) data
https://bernoff.com/blog/my-big-problem-with-statista

When you get an AI LLM powered aggregator like Google's now top search results that's scraping data from a data aggregator site like Statista finding bad or misleading data, then you get shoddy results.

Which is why relying on AI for correct info in 2025 is sketchy at best. You can ask ChatGPT the same question 3 times and it might reply to you with 3 different answers.

Good rule of thumb for all of us:
When the numbers seem suspect, they usually are. Thanks to the forumers who called this out and Northern Light for finding much more accurate info.

Most Canadians would not believe gun toting USA is less violent than Canada in virtually any crime category.
