Yeah the current CBC story is just going with "Carney under mounting pressure to dismiss candidate", which probably means he will drop the guy, likely once they figure out the replacement candidate. The situation seems too toxic for him to keep the guy around even if they can't get a replacement.

You don’t think that statements like that are life threatening? Turning him over would involve the abduction of an opposition candidate, so yes this is life threatening and violent rhetoric.

Turnng someone over to a foreign consulate is not a real thing. I tend to think he'll be dumped, or step down, but I actually wonder whether he's met the other candidate to apologize in person? To many people seen to think public regrets are good enough. I don't agree.

Let's be honest, he apologized because he got caught saying something reprehensible, not because he actually regrets what he said.

Again, this statement was made "publicly" yet the LPC still vetted him and approved him as a candidate.

According to The Star he's staying on

Dumb move. If Chiang is there on April 16, I could see this becoming his version of a "Turner moment".

1. Because it's not surprising that a company with a massive NYC real estate business had dealings with a family business that is also based on NYC real estate. Brookfield is that largest commercial landlord in NYC.

2. Brookfield funded $250 million out of $44 billion. That's 5.6% of the total purchase.

3. Brookfield Asset Management is a Parent with several subsidiaries. Brookfield Property Partners is the real estate subsidiary based in NYC. Brookfield Growth was the VC division involved in Twitter (now closed/folded into Pinegrove). And most importantly, Mark Carney wasn't part of either subsidiary, and his role at the parent (BAM) was limited to ESG investing.

As they say, when you're hot you're hot, and Carney's Teflon shield has been absolutely impenetrable so far. So we shall see.

I have to agree with this. This whole Paul Chiang thing is a huge deal in political circles on Twitter but I can't see it making waves in the general public. Especially when we have another round of massive tariffs coming from the Trump camp in 48 hours from now. The attention span of the public is short on a good day. In three days the conversation will be back to Trump. That's what the LPC is banking on IMO.

You're right.

Carney should drop Chiang like a hot potato, and I disagree very strongly with his decision to back him.

On the whole though, I still prefer Carney over PP given the overall stench of the threats to the Canadian state wafting northward from Drumpf's asshole.

Mark Carney (or at least the Liberal Party of Canada) has slipped on another banana peel with francophones and the French language.

The "Build Canada Homes" agency they've just announced has a very weird unwieldy name in French that sounds like they just rammed the English name through Google Translate very quickly.

It's being mocked in thousands of posts on Quebec Twitter this morning.

Backing Chiang definitely pisses off people with ties to Hong Kong and/or Taiwan, though. (I just don't know if they form a voting block large enough to sway election outcomes in places like Markham.)
Plus, if Trump decides to delay the tariff one more time, the spotlight is right on Chiang again.

Steering back to policy, the CPC is promising to defer taxes on any cap gains that are reinvested back in Canada.
