I'm not going to suggest that Trudeau created the problem. I think he inherited a lot of it. But he basically ignored it. In no small part because it was helping some favoured classes: real estate holders.

I think Trump told Carney something like:

"You have no leverage in this. I really don't care who wins in Canada. Stop f*cking around and you wont have any problems. In fact, play along and I can help you out."

Carney "We had a constructive call"

Shows you how much contempt Trump had of Trudeau. He hasn't spoken about any other Leader like that ever.

Even Starmer who's Labour Party openly campaigned against the GOP and Trump in last election was greeted respectfully.

It's hard to read into what "comprehensive negotiations about a new economic and security relationship" explicitly means in terms of direction.

Is this being closer to the US? The same amount? Less?

Like all wars there needs to be path to an end once the fighting is done.

They are going to start to have people sitting across the table working on the text of a agreement. That is positive.

The fact it covers both security and trade is a positive. Trump is transactional, this forces it be wider. It also changes it from a quotative discussion to a more abstract qualitative discussion.

I think Carney will be a hard negotiator.
