The thing about the % of Canadians wanting to be American is that it's only because Trump is in office. If Kamala had won and PP was winning in the polls there would be virtually no Conservatives wanting to join the US. It's all partisan BS.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and conservative influencer Ben Shapiro discussed how to help Canada elect “solid allies” to the Trump administration during a private gala in south Florida, according to audio of the event obtained by DeSmog and Canada’s National Observer.

“There was a massive conservative movement that's happening in Canada,” Shapiro said during the 25-minute conversation with Smith. “I think the obstacles to that need to be removed. It is better for the United States to have actual solid allies running in Canada than to have some of the schmucks that have been running Canada over the past few years.”
Makes her sound increasingly out of touch with Canadians. And, I would think, with a substantial number of Albertans. Concern with oil exports seems to have pushed aside all other considerations.

Maple MAGA. Despicable.

I am sure that the "fair and balanced", so called "impartial" folk here will not protest though.

The two quotes from that article that standout......

Quote:
Shapiro added that “It’s a silly country that makes maple syrup, hockey and annoying prime ministers,” stating that “we can annex it and then just call it an outlying territory or something like Puerto Rico, but of the North.”
Quote:
"She meanwhile declined to condemn an effort by a group of Albertans including former Medicine Hat Conservative MP LaVar Payne advocating for Alberta statehood within the U.S. as part of a “delegation to Washington.” Smith has suggested a referendum on statehood would be an appropriate way to deal with separatist sentiment.
I think that makes clear how Smith and the American lobby group she is supporting view where we are.

I use to view Smith as mis-guided and opportunistic. I am now coming along to view her as a traitor as others have indicated.

If you ever swing by the 905’s and/or the 416’s, can you tell us how many lawn signs of each party you see (although I don’t know if those are sufficiently indicative of voter intention)?

So far he obviously didn't have a good start and I don't know what he could do to gain support so it's about holding what he has. Carney and the Liberals will need to have a campaign without big stumbles if they are to maintain their lead.
Conservative/Poilievre supporters do seem to be angrier and more determined on average. I guess we will see if that sparks a bigger turnout on their side. They do have a pretty huge natural vote inefficiency disadvantage to make up for if they want to have any chance on April 28.

Some of the Carney support is no doubt a bandwagon thing, almost a "fashion". He's the thinking man's "Trudeau 2015". The opposite foil to nasty Poilievre.

Carney is obviously not as charismatic and attractive as early years PMJT, but arguably way more competent which sort of allays some of the bitter disappointment that many usual Liberal voters have over the 10 years that have gone by.

Under normal circumstances a smarter less charismatic version of JT probably doesn't get the feel-good softer vote out like angry right wingers can, but the situation with Trump/US makes a huge difference this time.

It's still Carney for me.

My 416 neighborhood is surprisingly 50/50 red and blue signs. Not one orange sign seen yet.

At this point I wonder whether this election will be more like Wynne vs Hudak (Ontario 2014) or Trump vs Biden (U.S. 2020).

There has always been a small percentage of Canadians, who want to join the US. It may have even shrunk under Trump.

I suspect you'd find a measurable percentage in every country in the world.

I say this in the kindest way possible: you need to go touch some grass. You were doom and gloom in the BC politics thread for the longest time, and now you're breaking out slurs? Seriously, log off, go find a hobby that doesn't involve the internet, talk to some friends in real life.

Donald Trump may have just delivered close to a death blow to Pierre Poilievre.

Yea I find that suspicious too.
On the other hand, there may be a way for PP to spin it to CPC's advantage. A senior producer with the Parliamentary bureau’s digital team notes that possibility too: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/livesto...ductive-amid-ongoing-trade-war-9.6702313
It comes down to how many voters buy whose message.

So Trump seems to like Carney. For the moment.

I find it interesting that Trump is supposedly Satan and Public Enemy Number One and we're not supposed to give in to him, but on the other hand we have to vote for the guy that he wants in our own federal election so that he stays happy.

(Personally I actually have no idea if in the medium to long term Canada-US relations in the Trump 2.0 era would be better with Carney or Poilievre as PM.)

This is going to be a pretty divisive election given the way it shaping up.

In particular a majority result off a ~4% popular vote advantage from the 10yr incumbent party could set off some anger.

Carney being more center-right probably quells it some extent but I dunno...

And that's how he f's with Canadians. The electoral campaign will only get more divisive from here.

I would expect Carney to be steadfast, stalwart, reasonable, rational and predictable.

PP would be less so.

I think Carney's approach is more reassuring.
