By the time Carney was chosen as PM, the CPC and Liberals were virtually tied. Incidentally, Justin Trudeau's approval ratings went from 22% at the beginning of the year, to 47% at the end of his term. Say what you want about JT, but he handled the Trump annexation threats very well, and stuck up for Canada.

Trudeau is the whole reason we are in this mess to begin with. Like it or not Trump does not put up with public criticism or disrespect and Trudeau spent the last eight years doing exactly those two things. He endlessly criticized the mega movement and disrespected Trump, specifically days after the election citing America failed to elect a female president burning the bridge he attempted to build by hustling down to maralago to bend the knee.
Trump’s vengeful nature is why he is coming after Canada so hard, he holds the cards economically. He’s made it very clear his dislike for Trudeau & Freeland, Canada is his new “just Rosie O’Donnell”, he’s not going to back down now, he will punish Canada.
Trudeau should have relinquished his power immediately after the US election and the threat of tarrifs so a new government with a longer mandate was in place to negotiate as Trump came into office.
