Actually thinking we have a 1st amendment in Canada is a new level of idiocy though.
If you ask anyone who's been involved in the Canadian court system, from time to time you do get people who say they want to "plead the 5th".

Lol . Carney supporters remind me a lot of MAGA.

I apologize, you're a genius and the major Canadian banks; BMO, CIBC, Scotiabank, and National Bank who very recently withdrew from Carneys NZBA climate initiative are all just bunch of chumps just like me. They clearly have no idea whats best for shareholders and should immediately appoint you as the CEO instead since you're clearly more knowledgeable

Trumps wet dream is for Canada to elect this (possible) Qatari asset

While our history of banter has been 99% hostile, I do come in peace, and admittedly absolutely agree with you (this time!).

What is funny if Carney adopted the slogan “Poilievre… he’s just like Trudeau”, it would be yet another part of Cons platform they adopted.

There are very select few individuals in this country that can match up to Carney’s work experience and education, let alone any politician. I admire that about Carney. Carney is infinitely better than Trudeau. What is actually appealing is he has a history of supporting both sides of the political spectrum. From what I observe he’s not a “Liberal at all costs” kind of person, what Trudeau represented.

My issues with Carney are the following

- he blatantly lied to Canadians stating he had no part in the relocation of Brookfield head office from Canada to the New York, in the name of looking after shareholders best interests during this difficult tariffs war time. In his role at the time, he absolutely had to look out for the best interests of the shareholders. I don’t dispute that. What I do dispute is his blatant lie to Canadians about his role.

- His policy of continuing the carbon tax on industry. He will continue to artificially inflate the price of production, which most certainly has trickle affect that the consumer ultimately pays. He is advocating for this even during the greatest tariff war this country has ever seen. The least he could do is come out and say the tax on industry will be suspended until the tariff war concludes. If there is anything that will drive businesses out of this country or bankrupt them, ultimately lowering Canada’s emissions, it will be the massive tariffs. No need to further artificially inflate the price.

- On the same subject, he again tries to lie saying the carbon tax on industry has no effect on consumers, when everyone Econ 101 course says that the consumer ultimately pays the price. In that one interview, (I can’t recall who with, CTV maybe?) he responds to the question saying something along the lines of “how much steel have you purchased” sort of thing. The least he could do is explain the impact of the tax on the consumer. He is an Econ whiz after all.

- His history of anti-Canada resource development, whilst investing in the same industry and infrastructure in other countries and jurisdictions.

- His uninformed, poorly communicated, (not a lie) but inaccurate information of Canada’s role in supply semiconductors to the USA. I get that the Liberals walked it back and explained what he meant, but he came across as someone that should know it, but doesn’t.

Anyway. I’ll likely get ridiculed for my points against Carney, but know that I come in peace, and I am thrilled that Trudeau is on his way out, and happy that man like Carney with his stature is now the PM for at least the time being, no matter the political party he represents.

Being the head of a bank and being electable are 2 very different things. Giving lectures to a bunch of very well healed and connected bankers is miles away from giving speeches about how you are going to relieve the financial struggles that your average person is dealing with.

I found Carney's speech lackluster at best but he probably didn't write it anyway but his oratory skills I found painful. People may say that this is the last thing we need is just polish with no substance which is true. That, however, doesn't change the fact that he is going to have to survive English & French debates and PP is going to make mincemeat out of him and most people don't make their decision on an election until after the debates. Anyone who doesn't believe that never saw the infamous Turner/Mulroney debates.

Getting a bunch of hardcore Liberals to support you is the easy part. Getting the rest of the population behind you is where you have to prove your metal and judging by his speech last night, he has his work cut out for him.

First of all I agree about that slimey Chud Pierre Trudeau. Loathsome and hopefully its the last we see of that family.
What Policies of the Liberals do you have so much faith in that will protect Canada?
Why do you think the same folks that ran Mr Trudeau have any better Idea's for Mr Carney?
I will give you this though Carney, unlike Trudeau, will read the briefs, understand their implications and will be able to ask difficult questions that he probably already knows the answer to . Keep in mind that he could and did work well with the Liberals arch enemy. Stephen Joseph Harper.
It is comforting to know that the Liberals finally have an Adult in charge but the man is still a climate warrior who's entire family and their grandchildren's hierarchy of needs won't even be dented by the Radical societal change he really believes in.
Hang on Folks.

These are not normal times so an orator like Mulroney or Kennedy, while nice, is not what we will have in Carney. I think the dull and vanilla approach may be part of the package. Canadians want lots of smarts and someone who can actually be respected and get our economy on a sound footing - not rage slogans, cheap shots and blame games... and not someone who is endorsed by Jones, Musk, Peterson, Shapiro and Trump.

First it's "mark carney hangs out with sex traffickers" and now "mark carney is a (possible) qatari asset". What's next, he runs a pedophile ring from his pizza shop?

From the Wall Street Journal for those who think Carney is going to be some magic bullet for dealing with Trump:

Canada’s New Leader Mark Carney Embodies Trump’s Least Favorite Things
A former central bank chief in Canada and the U.K., he is a defender of the multilateral order that Trump seeks to overturn
By Viola Monga and Paul Viera
March 10, 2025 at 2:59 pm ET

OTTAWA—Mark Carney represents a lot of the things President Trump and his supporters dislike. He is a card-carrying member of the global technocratic elite, and he has led not one but two central banks—Britain’s and Canada’s. He is a regular at Davos, where the World Economic Forum meets, and has been heavily involved in tackling climate change.

He is also, as of Sunday, the new leader of Canada’s governing Liberal Party and is expected to be sworn in as Canadian leader in the coming days. Political analysts expect him to call new elections that will test whether Trump’s drive to rip down and rebuild the world’s economic order will gain traction north of the border, too….

All positives.

We don't need the PM to be golf buddies with Trump. We need Trump to view Canada as a porcupine. That little critter that is nasty to deal with when you get it upset.

Trump is scared of the wall street markets. Mark Carney has far more creditability than anyone in Trumps administration in that crowd. You just need Mark Carney to go and give a talk at some lunchtime even on Wall Street to get Trump up in arms.

The more Trump associates Canada with Davos and action on Climate Change the more undesirable Canada is as the 51st state. We want to bring this annexation talk to an end. If he views us as a mini EU that like hockey it is a positive.

Lets face it, we need a strong champion for Canada at the WEF. The people who go to the WEF are the CEOs of some of the worlds largest multi-nations. All business that we want to attract to Canada.

There was a lot of talk prior to 2020, when JT's majority had been reduced to a minority, about him resigning over his unpopularity. COVID, which at the time a lot of people felt was a near existential threat (lots of talk of societal collapse) gave him and the Liberals a second wind. We're in a similar scenario now and I bet JT would have survived if he delayed his decision until February. If the LPC win again, they'll have a year or two honeymoon before their ineffectiveness becomes apparent again and they become vastly unpopular.

A lot of the hopes and dreams pinned on Carney are completely illogical. He has the same brain trust behind his campaign as the JT PMO, he has the same caucus, and likely will have many of the same cabinet ministers. His "business credentials" have also been overstated. He doesn't have any (Frank Baylis does though)- he's a banker and an economist. The idea that he's some sort of tough negotiator that'll drive Donald Trump into fits of diet coke throwing rage a la a Casper wet dream he recently posted about here is suspect.

How will this even work? The markets are already in turmoil. Why would Trump care less about that than Carney having some meal in New York city?

Yes, picking Marco Mendicino to run his PMO is a big mistake and already makes me question his judgement. It's bad enough he has Gerald Butts on his campaign team. Why would Carney let a failed Trudeau minister run his ship?

Trump cares about the markets. Carney has credibility with the markets.

They are tumbling because of the tariffs. The market assumed this was some negotiation ploy, now they understand its real.

Someone needs to tell the markets, look it is going to all be ok, the US is not going to put tariffs on Canada (Mexico or EU) and no one is going to retaliate.

Carney current message is going to be, "You have not see anything yet. We are going to hurt the US."

Trump could use some economic advice from Carney.
He should hire him as a consultant.

This is just fantasy. Tariffs from the world's largest economy has a much more sway on business decisions than whatever Carney can say.

There are ways to strategize around it and play to our strengths but that doesn't include hopium around Carney just walking into a room on Wall Street and smooth talking business leaders into ignoring the tariff reality.

It also just ignores the fact that Trump actually has less pushback now than he did in his first term. If anything large US businesses are placating Trump more than ever before. I wouldn't be surprised if large US businesses have put a pause on Canadian investments precisely not to get on his bad side.
