Do you know how threaded discussions work? 4 posts in 18 minutes is me catching up on various conversations.

Carney is much less tense and seems to be able to pay it cool compared to Trudeau and PP. Plus his business experience puts him in a place where he will be taken much more seriously. My bet is that Carney knows a lot of influential Americans in business who will be happy with him as our PM.

If Trump and his goons can't respect us then I'd much rather have Carney leading us to make better business decisions on where we go in the future.

Using that analogy, it's easy to say that Freeland would be the worse choice, having been the literal equivalent of a vice president. The thing the Democrats needed to win was indeed a "Carney". Beyond that there is a great deal of difference between the two campaigns; Trudeau was (until recently) less popular than Biden ever was, and the US itself has not experienced an outside existential threat for a very long time. Instead, they are experiencing one from the inside.

I'm not sure why people bother using words like "libs," "woke," etc. That may work in America, but to me, it's just Trump-ism. There is something off- putting with classifying all one's enemies with made-up language and slang terms.

BTW, most dictators in history do not respect Democratic leaders and values, so I would argue that if Trump and his MAGA minions do not respect our leadership, it may actually be a good thing. Canadians have to decide if they want democracy, or autocratic leadership like some Latin American countries, and now sadly, America. If the Trump Administration hates us for standing up for our democratic principles, so be it.

Just who would Trump and his minions respect? It seems we would need a right wing extremist strongman type to be his buddy. I'm not sure we've ever had one, and with good reason. Ruthless leaders are destined to do as much damage to their own country as to any others.

Anyone controlling a much more powerful military force than the USA’s current one, for starters.

(Not that that exists at the moment…)

You mean like Lukashenko in Belarus? Putin considers him a flunky and Belarus a client state. The only reason why Putin didn’t invade Belarus is because he didn’t need to. He already had his lap dogs there anyway.

I have to say, this is not quite what I was expecting out of Carney. One thing for certain, he's got to improve his answer to the question about how he's different than Trudeau. It's a little shocking; he has to know that questions coming but his answer is pretty weak.
Agreed. His answer should be I’m not running against Justin Trudeau, I’m running against Pierre Poilievre and the difference between us is that I have run the evonomies of two G7 countries through their central banking systems during existential crises and he has never had a real job.

He prefers career politicians that aren’t very smart? Maybe. I don’t think finding someone that he might like because he is the same kind of populist is the answer. He will do whatever he wants no matter who is PM. Someone who will be able to navigate the economy in the face of Trump is far more important. There’s a pretty clear choice for that.

Not that that will make much of a difference in Quebec.
Believing that Quebec voters choose their candidate based on how good their French is, is ridiculous and insulting to Quebec voters.

They do need to be able to communicate reasonably effectively in French but it’s not a language test, you are right.

Regardless of accent in French the Tories are labelled as redneck Jesus freak drill baby drill anti-abortion right wingers by a lot of people here. This is why they can’t seem to go above the mid-20s.

The Liberals while not tugging at the heart strings either are seen as a safer bet.

That said not sure if the Carney new car smell will hold up in Quebec.

We could very likely go back to Bloc 35 Lib 25 and Con 20 by the election.

Thank your provincially elected Conservative governments for most of that!

Exactly. I am not asking for perfection. But if a candidate didn't even made an effort to learn French and reply with an arrogant and contemptuous "nope" when asked if he intend to do it, I will make as much of an effort to vote for him.

I don't think any other LPC hopeful has ever addressed that social undercurrent with anything other than snide dismissal, and even the CPC has largely tried to avoid that tripwire (although if you wouldn't know it if you only listened to posters like Marshsparrow).
I think they have to address working-class young men in general, and not specifically white working-class young men. In general, there's a cohort of men of all races who feel that governments have largely been focused on other groups and that they have been forgotten and left behind. I think there's a lot of truth to this and it could pay off for a politician to actually speak to it instead of treating it like a hot stone.

I suspect that Carney does that to signal a break with the virtual-signalling ways of JT.

That's fine and all, but voters are definitely going to want to know sooner or later how he differs from Trudeau. Canadians weren't going to re-elect Trudeau, and they won't re-elect the Liberals until they are certain that Carney is going to be vastly different than the previous Prime Minister.

I think the election question is who can handle Donald Trump and who has the experience to safeguard Canada.

Carney stands out in that.

Pierre until this weekend appeared to be a Musk-Peterson-Trump enthusiast / lap dog.
