The rural retired or unemployed would too. Students also do well. Overall it’s neutral so given the above if you are a more typical suburban family you are paying a lot more than you get back. I have to say, this is not quite what I was expecting out of Carney. One thing for certain, he's got to improve his answer to the question about how he's different than Trudeau. It's a little shocking; he has to know that questions coming but his answer is pretty weak.

Pierre - Canada is broken and we're stupid - have heard this for 2 years to him now being the proudest Canadian and going to save us - this guy will be on the first plane to Washington to sell us out. Interesting to see him scramble to get some policy stuff out - so much for the crowd who said this only comes out during the election.

Funny to see some of the social media saying Harper wanted Carney for Finance Minister after his BoC gig - but never trusted/asked Pierre.

Says a great deal.

You've been saying this for two to three years now, but a lot of the Liberal leadership hopefuls' policies (and even JT's more recent policies) is mostly just copying from the CPC's playbook. See cuts to immigration, cutting the carbon tax, repealing the cap gains tax, and if that Carney interview is to be suggested even building pipelines. It's hard to argue that there's been no policy over the last two years when the LPC is scrambling to get on side with the CPC.

"Canada is broken" worked just fine when the enemy was the performative virtue signalling JT.

Now that JT is gone, PP obviously needed to pivot.

Trumpian threats and a Canadian existential crisis are what's important now.

Are you surprised this is where PP pivoted? It was only to be expected.

PP sounded pretty good in that video BTW.

Double down Canada is broken.

Libs try to gaslight that this is unpatriotic and need to continue as is.

JT broke it. The country is worse off in pretty much every metric since liberals took over.

Change is needed.

Interesting podcast appearance from Mark Carney. The eye-brow raising moment for me was when he mentioned that his vision of Canada in 2028 included growing economic opportunities for all Canadians, but made a point that he included "white working class young men" in that vision. I don't think any other LPC hopeful has ever addressed that social undercurrent with anything other than snide dismissal, and even the CPC has largely tried to avoid that tripwire (although if you wouldn't know it if you only listened to posters like Marshsparrow).

In general I think the comparison is overdue. But he really has trouble with answering questions where he knows his answer isn't what he wants to be the story. You need to get better policies or learn to obfuscate better. I don't know if he thinks he's vulnerable on his left or really is as leftist as he appears in these interviews. Being a banker it is hard to imagine but who knows.

“OK” isn’t going to cut it.

This weird Lib belief that Carney is going to be the best one to tackle Trump is bizarre. Witness Vance and Rubio’s disastrously offensive European trip. They and Trump don’t respect the type of technocratic establishment politician that Carney exemplifies.

It's early but I think the Kamala comparison can be made. He has the new car smell in a broken down garage. Are people going to remember the garage or the car despite the promises of the salesman. In the US, they remembered the garage.

He has some things against him, if the CPC can successfully marry him to Trudeau as Kamala was to Biden the results will be the same. His I'm a European quote won't help. It doesn't seem to be a hindrance yet but we'll see how his rusty French holds up campaigning in Quebec.

Comparisons to the 2 party system in the US are pointless.

I think the first thing that needs to be said is while I agree that JT is/was performative, as many pols are........ I'm not sure I accept that PP is any less so.

JT beyond policy failings had the presentation issues of seeming smug/glib and also, yes, of being periodically over enamoured with virtue-signalling.

At the same time PP is a lifelong politician, his history is one of being hyper-partisan, name calling/heckling and riling up the base.
Not exactly the most endearing traits, to me, anyway. For the most part, he's been policy light, and where he has made firmer statements or not repudiated past ones.....

We might infer from what he has/has not said that ending CBC TV is a terribly important thing. I disagree, as many Canadians do; if nothing else, it would be economically damaging in the culture sector, I can tell you that financially struggling Corus and Bell Media, both have laids off hundreds or thousands will not be launching new programming and supporting employment in that sector if the CBC shutters and a few thousand are laid off.

I'm not promising my vote to any party at this point, as ever, I believe in reading complete, costed, platforms before determining where my vote ought to go; I also consider the state of the race in my riding, and who is actually contending and who one might accidentally elect with an ill considered choice.

I will say, I thought he did ok in the video clip. But 4M of uncontested, at least somewhat rehearsed script to a receptive audience is far short of a challenging test.

***

In respect of Carney (should he be the victor in the Liberal contest, which seems increasingly likely). I do agree his French is a problem, though PP's isn't great either.
I also agree he seems a bit clunky when facing anything question more challenging than a soft ball lob. I would also note, earlier this month that he got quite chirpy with the media
(as in hot under the collar) when he was pressed on some issues. He'll have to watch that.

Why are these media companies laying people off? I thought Justin solved all their problems by making Facebook and google supplement their incomes because they were hurting so much.

PP's French is quite a bit better than Carney's.

Not that that will make much of a difference in Quebec.

4 posts in 18 minutes means you need to learn about the "edit" button unless of course you're trying to get your post count up for some reason

A much better analogy to Kamala would be Freeland than Carney but it doesn't look like she'll win the leadership and little wonder

You make random unverified statements all the time.

I didn't talk about comparing the people, it's the specific leader replacement. It's not nearly as relevant in a multi-party Parliamentary system.
