I doubt it. Trump was tight with both Maxwell and Epstein, and it did not affect him.

Non scientific SSP poll (morning of Feb 9, 2025) predicts a landslide:

80 (Carney) > 40 (PP)

I’ll bite. How were young people fucked over for the last ten years? Specific policy that didn’t exist previously.

I would understand a young person looking to the NDP but thinking the conservatives care about young people shows a lack of understanding about what they stand for. The attack dog, sound bite strategy has likely resonated on social media for that generation.

Admit it. Can you?
If Pierre was photographed with Ghislaine Maxwell this thread would be on fire right now. Even if the circumstances of said photo were identical to Mark Carney's.

I'm not bothered by the photos for the reason Molson described. But I very much doubt we'd be discussing it with the same degree of level-headedness if it were Pierre in those pictures.

Would have been good if the Mods added the other party options.

Yes the double standard is glaring. It's why sometimes I wonder if Canada can keep MAGA at bay forever given this level of delusion.

you guys know those photos are fake, right? They are not even good fakes. Posted to twitter by guys with a bunch random numbers behind their name, pushed by True North and other alt right web sites.

The double standard is that Liberals are smarter than to fall for that.

yeah, because housing costs have only been going up under the current government....here's a chart that ends when they took over....it's basically been a straight line since the turn of the century to today....other that whining about it, the conservatives haven't issued a single realistic policy idea to change it, and if you believe that conservatives are the ones who will actively reduce housing wealth in Canada, I am not sure what to tell you.

The photos printed in the sun article are not fakes.

Yes there are fake photos of mark and Ghislaine. This doesn’t help the situation.

lol. Do you think young people haven’t had their dreams dashed. They’re making the same money as their parents were thirty years ago and paying more in rent than their parents ever paid in mortgages. Please.

Even if this was true as the chart shows it's basically a consistent trend and the nearly the same track in New Zealand and Australia show it's an Anglo American paradigm.

Housing is certainly more expensive compared to incomes but almost everything else is cheaper. Live like your parents and you'll save for a house in no time. Once the gatekeepers are taken away who is going to be the new reason people's lives are failing? I suspect like the UK the honeymoon will be very short for a new government.

There was a 3-day music festival called the Wilderness Festival in 2013 in the UK. It was at an Oxfordshire estate called Cornbury Hall, owned by Lord and Lady Rotherwick. Among those who attended on August 10th were the newly appointed Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, who was there with his wife and daughters.

It wasn't totally surprising, as at the time Lady Rotherwick (Tania) was Mark Carney's sister-in-law - he married her sister, Diana Fox. (She's still his sister-in-law, but separated from Lord Rotherwick around 2015). His attendence was noted in an article in the London Standard, that said the festival's nickname was 'Poshstock'.

Ghislaine Maxwell was at school with Tania Fox, and had been brought up at another Oxfordshire estate, Headington Hill Hall. In 2013, in the UK, she was known as a socialite, who spent more time in the US than the UK, following the death of her controversial press tycoon father, Robert Maxwell, in 1991. It isn't at all surprising that she was at the same music festival.

Jeffrey Epstein had been convicted in a Florida state court in 2008 of procuring a child for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute. Ghislaine Maxwell's role in his illegal activities were not known in public, and had not been published in any publication, in 2013.

It wasn't until 2015 when 'Jane Doe' claimed that Maxwell recruited her on behalf of Epstein when she was a 16-year-old spa attendant at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, where Epstein had a home. (Yes, that Mar-a-Lago. Trump and Epstein had an extensive history). Jane Doe was identified as Virginia Roberts Giuffre in 2018. A number of women subsequently came forward, identifying Maxwell's involvement in procurement of underage girls for Epstein.

So Mark Carney wouldn't have known anything about Ghislaine Maxwell's involvement with anything illegal in 2013. He just happened to be at a music festival that she also attended.

She had been a well-known friend, associate, helicopter pilot and occasional lover of Epstein for decades.

Plausibly he was a fresh off the boat rube from the colonies who didn’t understand how British or American social circles worked.

Boomer statements like this are the exact reason young people support the Tories.

Spending cuts and tax cuts for boomers will surely help them get into the market.

Maybe if PP loses the 65+ vote enough he will actually follow through with some generational fairness. Cut OAS. Keep the CCB. But I doubt it.

Which part of living like my parents should I emulate? The part where they lived on a single entry-level income while the other went to school, and bought a detached house in central Toronto?

The part where you don't travel until you're 30 and eat out twice a year. But you had rich parents. Mine didn't get a career till they were 35 as there weren't any.

A friends younger brother is a teacher friend and bought a central attached Toronto house on one income in 2017. Dude still has a Flipphone. Rented a room for $500 and paid off student loans in 18 months and saved $25k a year for 6 years after that to buy a house at 30ish (I think he had some big stock wins too but still)

If you think getting rid of the gatekeepers is going to help I'm glad you are supporting the Cons so us rich folks can save on our capital gains. (Though I am kind of pissed I triggered some before last June's deadline for nothing)

I mean we need a Conservative government and it's clear now Carney is going to be only a minor course correction so insufficient But I just find the generational arguments ridiculous.

Never understood this. It was obvious from the outset that this tax was not going to last very long. I guess the Liberals got a one-time windfall of a few billion from the panic sellers. Don't feel too bad, think of it as prepaying for your GST over the "tax holiday".

Anyhow 2017 was 8 years ago. Your then 30-something year old friend is probably over 40 now, and the upcoming 30 somethings are buying a 1BR condo in central Toronto for the same price.

Her association and involvement with Epstein was reported, but not particularly widely. It became much more widely known after the subsequent court cases, and more detailed reporting once the royal connection to Prince Andrew started to interest the tabloid press. She wasn't in hiding or even out of the public eye in the US - for example, in 2013 "Dom Perignon & Ghislaine Maxwell Invite you to a cocktail reception Celebrating the launch of Ideapod"

Accepting an invitation to a private event that she hosted would perhaps have been unwise (although the President of Iceland and his wife didn't seem to care). The picture from the Music Festival isn't the same. They were both there - Carney with his wife and daughters - and presumably his wife would have known who Maxwell was. The fact that Carney and Maxwell attended the event isn't disputed. But implying that showed poor judgement on Carney's part or that there was anything other than the fact that both just happened to have been in the same field, with a few thousand other people, is classic political shit-throwing. It seems to stick to Conservative walls.

Do not misconstrue these comments as an endorsement of PP BTW.
He was minister of where I work and I'd say that he was pretty ineffective. He was quite unpopular with the general public with the statements he made.
