The first trickles of tariff-related polling are coming in.

https://researchco.ca/2025/02/03/trump-tariffs-canada/

Good for Trudeau and Poilievre's handling of the situation so far, with the edge going to Trudeau.

49% of Canadians think the Conservatives would be better positioned to deal with the tariffs, 38% think they wouldn't (13% unsure).

Not sure that will work for us.
He does seem to have a weird fixation on Canada currently. Plus he hates Trudeau or has jealousy towards him. He probably assumes he is hurting the Libs reelection chances even though he is having the opposite effect.

Ultimately, his ego can’t handle the real cost of tariffs. I’m now leaning to thinking he will relent.

Interesting. We shall check the numbers again if SWO auto industry gets decimated because of the tariffs.

It sure looks like things are going the opposite direction of Trump’s intention.

The fix is in.

After the Trump/Biden debate, I thought Joe had a disastrous start, came back a bit in the middle and didn't end well. I thought to myself, he did just enough so CNN can still prop him up. Imagine my surprise when John King ripped him a new one and the rest stepped in line. I was shocked and knew the fix was in.

Yesterday, I watched Freeland get interviewed by Rosie Barton. It was all niceties at first then Barton surprisingly turned on Freeland in a way I have never seen CBC do to a Liberal. I got the exact same post-Biden vibe, the fix is in.

CBC has tacitly declared they are all in on Carney, all day, all the time.

Given the massive edge on approval Poilievre has over Trudeau this is a huge win for Trudeau and probably the Liberals. A lot of this coordinated response was something only Trudeau could have done at this time and I think we all see that. Speaking directly to Americans, with Mexico and premiers is something even Harper wouldn't have pulled off as well and is clearly beyond PP's current skills. (though he might get there). The word is still out on Carney. His stump speech is a bit weak.

President Dump is totally unaware. Maybe whatever backchannels the CPC has with the Republicans better be opened to communicate that to the adults in the room.

Can we expect Trump to stop being obsessed with Canada for 30 days now?

The Americans are so corny with their fake tough guy language sometimes. Trump isn’t manly in the slightest.

It's outstanding how Trump's big win over Canada is forcing Canada to do something they announced in December. Except for this "fentanyl czar" nothing really changes.

The "Joint Strike Force" (whatever that is) and the $US200million of U.S. spending are also new.

From the Public Safety Canada press release:

Quote:
Propose to the United States the creation of a new North American Joint Strike Force to target transnational organized crime, including operational surges, dedicated synthetic drug units, expanded Combined Forces Special Enforcement Units, Binational Integrated Border Enforcement Teams, and new technical operations capacity and infrastructure.
The spending's new, but the idea of the Joint Strike Force isn't.

Not sold on Carney, but I'll take him any day of the week over Poilievre. I do think his book Values is good, it's serious economics written in pretty accessible language. But he's much more centrist than I am.

I have to say I don't think I've been as pessimistic about the political situation in a long time. I'm on the left but Singh has really been a disappointment.

It's probably powder they kept dry. None of this is very expensive either.

And that has me suspicious that Trump is just fucking with us and this is not the real ask.

But at least it lets us get back to the election and now we have a real issue to discuss. I want to know what each party's vision of the future of our country is.

30 days? Dump will be in a mood 3 or 4 days from now and post some incoherent 2 am diatribe on truth social from his toilet.

I foresee problems when the Americans want armed agents to have enforcement powers in Canada.

I think the key bit that stands out for me is Trumps announcement talking about 30 days to come to a "economic agreement" to avoid tariffs.

We are either talking about economics/trade or we are talking about border control.

I think it's time for that Kathy Griffen picture of her holding Donald's bloody head to start trending again. To think that kid was so close to doing us all a favour ..and what poetic justice it would have been for it to have been a gun to take him out.
