It needs to be tested if we are to progress. Professional certification, Quebec excepted in some areas, should be low hanging fruit and yet nothing happens.

How would Carney resist Trump’s fascist aims in Canada?

How easily people forget that Carneys ultra low/real negative rate BOC policy was what began hyper-inflating the housing bubble from 2008 til now.

Carney only looks at headline GDP and dosent consider GDP per capita. From 2008 and onwards he wanted and still wants to turn Canada from a resource based economy into a real estate and
service sector/gig work based economy.

Hes far more dangerous than Freeland or Trudeau. The support I see in this poll for Carney is terrifying.

I'm pretty confident Carney would be ideologically unimpeachable in that regard.

Pierre Poilievre, however, is a lot more similar to Trump in terms of his demeanour, ideology, or his lack of respect the truth and facts.

I think Trump will be able to Pierre Poilievre like a fiddle, while he'll have a much harder time with Mark Carney. Trump is a lot more intelligent and cunning than Poilievre, but Mark Carney is more intelligent and more principled than both of them combined.

To call Trump more intelligent than Poilievre shows you're just an ideologue .

If Trump were intelligent he would understand tariffs will just be costs passed along to the consumer/his voting base.

You're telling us one of the most brilliant economic minds to ever come out of Canada, wants to turn Canada away from developing its abundant natural resources? I don't believe that for a millisecond.

Carney is also far more qualified to deal with the housing crisis than PP or JT.

Carney literally quit Canada for a phat paycheque in London, so I am not seeing him as particularly patriotic. But even if he were, how does “ideological impeachability” help him resist Trump?

He was JT’s economic advisor. What advice did he give him to fix the housing crisis? Why hasn’t this advice been implemented?

What we don't know is if JT ended up taking the advise he was given.

Clearly JT did not listen to his finance minister.

How am I an ideologue? Trump isn't a Democrat, he's a far right republican with fascist tendencies.

There's a huge difference between being intelligent, and doing smart things. Trump is clearly a highly intelligent person, as no one can be that funny without being intelligent. I don't think Pierre has a single funny bone in his body.

I lost all respect for Trump way back when he pulled the BS about Obama and the birth certificate, but I'm not going to try and pretend that he's not an intelligent person, because he clearly is, even if a lot of what he does is stupid, dangerous, and reprehensible. I have no issue admitting that Poilievre isn't a complete scumbag like Trump is, but no, I still don't think Poilievre is more intelligent than Trump

I think Trump will have no problem manipulating PP compared to Carney.

It's not just that Carney is more ideologically unimpeachable than Poilievre, he's more intelligent, and far more versed in negotiating with businesspeople, and Trump is a businessman. Moreover, I think Carney has a higher ethnical standard than Poilievre, and I just don't see Trump manipulating Carney like he would PP.

Poilievre is well aware that significant part of his base are fans of Trump, and that he won't be doing himself any favours by being too publicly critical of Trump. Carney doesn't have to worry about this balancing act of not offending Canadians who like Trump, while still sticking up for Canada, Poilievre absolutely has to worry about this.

I am pretty sure Trump understands all that. This is a high-stakes gambit he is running. Not sure what it is precisely but there is definitely some kind of "play" behind this.

(Not saying he will be successful, BTW.)

That sounds like a question for JT, and for premiers and mayors across the country. How could you possibly expect me or anyone else outside of JT's inner circle to give you an accurate answer on that?

At least with Freeland we know what her advice was and that it wasn’t taken. Carney was Trudeau’s economic advisor for some time. We don’t know 1) whether he gave any advice 2) whether the advice was accepted and 3) if it wasn’t, how Carney plans to implement it.

When he was announced in this role, they said he would “develop and shape ideas for the next phase of Canada’s strategy for near- and longer-term economic growth and productivity.”

You’re convinced he has a plan to fix the housing crisis. He was one of the creators of the current housing crisis, so if you don’t know what he would do why do you think he will improve it?

Trump is not a businessman, he is a grifter. Carney has no experience in dealing with such individuals. He has spent his entire life among bureaucrats and bankers. If you want someone experienced than Freeland is a much better bet. She made her career dealing with oligarchs, gangsters and spies, including Trump himself.

Whatever faults PP has, he is well respected by Trump’s base. This gives Trump much less freedom of maneuver than he has with Carney (who he can bully as easily as he did Trudeau).

Just because he’s a grifter doesn’t mean he’s a not a businessman. Don’t make me tell you to go read his Wikipedia page, it would be an insult to your intelligence.

Not sure if you’re a fan of PP or MC, but I’m going to guess the former. Sorry if I take your belief that Freeland is the better bet with a grain of salt.

I think you know elections ultimately come down to “feels”, and that Chrystia has little hope in hell getting over how people feel about her connections to JT.

Carney can justifiably call himself an outsider, Freeland can’t. It’s that simple.

I don’t think Trump’s base gives a flying crap about Canada or PP for that matter… I think Trump will have a much easier time manipulating Pierre Poilievre than he would with Mark Carney, plain and simple. We don’t have to agree, and it seems like we are not going to.

Interesting take and it makes a lot of sense. Freeland has zero chance of winning a May 2025 election though. If NDP support is back on the table for an October election maybe her odds are up to 1%. Chantal Hebert had a good line that if you google Chrystia Freeland Justin Trudeau is in every photo.

Carney has zero chance of winning either. But at least Freeland has some idea what she is doing for a short term job and at least puts some distance from Trudeau (having decided very late he is an idiot). Carney is being coronated by the Trudeau gang that ran the county into the ground.

Unfortunately for Chrystia Freeland, it is impossible for her to wash away the stain of the Trudeau era. At least for this election cycle. She is relatively young; there might be another opportunity for her to take the helm. Carney is a bit older, and his brand is quite strong.

Carney has a chance. It may be small, but it is not zero. If he appears strong in the face of Trump's daily insanities, he will gain respect. Six months is a long time in politics. Do Canadians really want conservative premiers (Ford, Legault, Smith, etc.), and PP, and Trump, all at the same time? That unholy troikas scares the shit out of me.

Come fall 2025, the best that I can hope for is a PP minority, or better still, a Carney minority.
