Social gathering places where no money is required are indeed very important --- and worth having a conversation or two about. I wouldn't say that the Hose qualified as that though, nor do I think that 3Halls won't work as a music venue.

I wouldn't mind hearing more of your ideas about the Broadway area, if you're inclined.

StatsCan has published new population estimates showing that Saskatoon's CMA population was 367,336 as of July 1, 2024.

The Saskatoon CMA grew by nearly 40,000 people between 2020 and 2024.

See the stats here.

Largest Sask. cities saw steady population growth in 2024

By John Flatters

January 17, 2025

A report by Statistics Canada on population shows two regions in Saskatchewan were in the top 10 for growth in 2024.

The report refers to the population growth year-over-year starting July 1 for Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA) and Census Agglomerations (CA). For reference, the CMA of Saskatoon includes Warman and Martensville to the North, Colonsay to the East, and Blackstrap Reservoir to the South.

According to the report, from July 2023 to July 2024, the Saskatoon CMA grew 4.1 per cent to 367,336 — that ranks seventh out of 41 CMAs across the country.

How many new hospital beds in that time. Probably none.

Fire Station #5 on Preston Avenue, across from the University opened in August 2023. Yeah, it replaced the old Fire Station #5 in Sutherland, but it is "new".

It certainly would be nice to see infrastructure built to keep up with the growth. Adding 40,000 people in 4 years to a metro the size of Saskatoon is significant. For example, how much longer do we have to wait for a proper overpass/interchange to be constructed at Marquis and Idylwyld by the north Costco?? Sheesh. There are two bedroom communities to the north of Saskatoon each with populations approaching 15,000. And you have Saskatoon growing at a fast clip. And yet we still have to put up with an at-grade intersection with lights at Marquis and Idylwyld causing traffic backups as far as the eye can see at certain times of the day. It's ridiculous. I don't begrudge Regina getting their bypass with countless overpasses and interchanges, but why can't Saskatoon get ONE proper overpass/interchange built at THE key intersection routing people in and out of Saskatoon heading to Martensville and Warman -- two of Saskatchewan's fastest growing communities?? Makes no sense.

Any news from the new mayor, or anyone else, on the new arena downtown? It's been a while. The fanfare should be building instead of waining....

Looks like the old SIAST could be repurposed for housing and support. It would be great for that area to recover and become a successful immigration integration story.

Sounds like you are hoping the Province builds Phase 1 of the Saskatoon Freeway.

https://saskatoonfreeway.org/

The latest I've heard is that they will not begin any work on it for at least 15 years, so I imagine you may be waiting a while.

They're getting nothing right, except sprawl.
I would hope that an overpass in this location with a high number of users being residents of Warman and Martensville (i.e., people outside city limits) would mean that the cost of constructing this particular overpass would be shared between the city and province. But that's just my opinion. As for your comments on city planning, I couldn't agree with you more that more focus needs to be placed on a fast and efficient public transportation system for Saskatoon. And hopefully the BRT will achieve these goals.

Buses move people, but so do cars. And as long as we have cars to move people from point A to point B, I would rather have infrastructure built that allows them to move as efficiently as possible. This means not having lights along major freeway thoroughfares, but having interchanges that keep traffic flowing. I spent a good chunk of the summer in Scandinavia, and they have achieved a good balance between offering amazing public transit and having roads/interchanges that enable traffic to flow efficiently.

Yep - 15 years would be a long time to wait. At an annual growth rate of 2%, the Saskatoon CMA would be approx 500,000 people by 2040. At an annual growth rate of 3%, the Saskatoon CMA would reach approx 500,000 people by 2035. Not sure building a perimeter freeway can wait 15 years. I'm trying to imagine a metro of 500,000 with just Circle Drive and Idylwyld Drive as major freeways to accommodate vehicles. I'm hoping that discussion of an LRT system for Saskatoon will be happening by the years 2035-2040 so that more people will choose public (rapid) transit over driving.

Quick idea --- instead of an arena, let's build a few overpasses!

WORST IDEA EVER!!

Sort of joking, but also not.

The value to the city. and making Saskatoon an attractive place for people and investment, of a couple isolated overpasses compared to a major reimagining of our downtown as a place for people doesn't compare.

Maybe if said overpasses were part of the Saskatoon Freeway, but also, given how much of a benefit to the areas around Saskatoon that would be, it would HAVE to funded by the province or even with some contributions by Corman Park, Warman and Martensville (though I'm sure that would not happen....but it's logical!)

These things tend to get funded suddenly when there is a new infrastructure program, usually associated with economic stimulus during a recession. One needs to be pretty much shovel-ready though. The Federal liberals pretty much stopped funding roads. That is likely to change when they are gone.

Both cities are suffering from suburban sprawl but, it is nice to see that Saskatoon is doing something to retain (and hopefully increase) some vibrancy downtown. A tale of two cities. So similar and yet different.

I would hope you mean the City, shared cost would be shared equally with Warman/ Martensville and Saskatoon along with the Province.
