I suspect the same. Which makes his claim even more bizarre. It's just as easy to run Highway 5 north right to the Neepawa hog plant. It's virtually the same distance.

From Brandon to Portage he has SIX alternate options to cross the river. West: 10, 340, 5. East: 242, 305, 240.

SIX alternate crossings!

How many alternates does Lynn Lake have if their bridge goes out? Zero. It's the only road. What's the inconvenience to Lynn Lake if their bridge goes out? An entire town gets cut off and a potential $600 million/yr gold mine can't start. What happens if Carberry doesn't get an overpass? People die.

He's got the biggest case of backyard-itis I've ever seen. The Hwy 34 bridge isn't even in the top 50 priority projects for Manitoba to complete. It can sit closed for 20yrs+ or indefinitely from a priority perspective.

also screws broche and lac broche and tedule lake for winter road acces if we lost the churchill river bridge as it doesnt freez over fully cant even walk acvross the ice on it when it does.

sometimes u cant just go to the closest plant as he might be under contract from x plant.

hylife only takes from their network of hog barns they have it pritty locked down
and with biosecurity u cant just take any path to the plant. and have to get ok'ed i had to work around allot of the bio security stuff when i used to service the hylife sites for internet. if i was going to some of their sites i had to cordnate my route to avoid going near quarteen areas from other manufacutres and could only visit 1 site a day its not as simple as taking a alternate route. highly regulated federaly.

sigersons supost to be replacing a bridge at cockeram creak on the 391 8miles from town finaly starting next month. that one is heaved up so u have to slam on ur breaks if u dont know about it going south or risk destroying ur struts and ball joints from hitting the 6in sharp rise with ur tires where the road meets the bridge
highways finaly put some cold pack to ramp it this yr but it keeps shifting up[/QUOTE]

This appears to be a signage issue as well as a road issue. Somebody from MIT should have posted an uneven surface ahead warning sign or one of the flashing reader boards to notify drivers of the issues. From what it sounds like neither are in place.

Mr Bodaggin - we will do this in point form.

1.There is a difference in our highway system between RTAC / A1 / B1.
4 out of the 6 Highways / ROADS you listed are B1 and are called Provincial Roads.
You cannot haul full weight in a regular tridem set up on these roads.
Most bridges on these Roads are also restricted. This is not good for the business end of trucking and therefore are used only when necessary and with the proper permits.
Hwy 5 ( and 34 ) is a A1 Highway. Bigger weights, but there are some restrictions with these Highways.
RTAC Highways are simple to guess -Number 1 / 16 / 75 / 10. No restriction...let'er Fly!

2. The Point of my post was we need 34 and 5 to be RTAC highways, and the value of the products that would use those highways is worth the investment to upgrade the Bridges and Road surface to accommodate this. I know nothing of the value of Potatoes, but those are 2 big industries for Carberry and Portage...not sure why you went off on that tangent....

3. In my post I should have said that the bridge 1ajs was talking about should also get the fix it needs as well, my post was not a us or them thing.!

4. Finally if we used your logic, about how close 32 KILOMETERS is to go around,
then we should tell the good folks in Winnipeg that we'll close down a few bridges like
Osborne St bridge and Donald ( Midtown?) St Bridge. make everyone going south go over to Norwood Bridge. There soo close together. LOL -
Now- OF COURSE this is a ridiculous idea!

5. Now if your original post was just venting at MTI , I get that. I just take umbrage with the notion that what you think is a "nowhere" bridge is still a very important part of MY BACKYARD. Which is all of Southern Manitoba.

6. Don't know where you got the 600 million per year for this goldmine, But that is great news for Lynn Lake area...

If you have any question please ask, just don't ask about potatoes...

It IS "us or them", because MB is heavily behind on road building and has finite cash to upgrade them with.

Therefore, that cash must be used in the highest priority locations first. Like overpasses at Carberry, Yellowhead, Oakville, Elie, Deacons, Lynn Lake bridge, and on and on and on. Highway 34's bridge was nowhere near as high a priority as these others. By any metric (Commerce, AADT, Lifeline, or Danger).

The $35 million that was spent on 34 easily have built one of these overpasses or other critical bridges.

This is the government equivalent of spending money on Jets tickets, when you can't even afford to buy food. Priorities.

I hear you. I really do.

That area of Manitoba ( hwy 34 / 5 / 23 ) Has been long neglected for 20 plus years.
I remember driving 23 west of Swan Lake after 97 flood. Hwy / bridges all beat to 🞵🞵🞵🞵 bringing material to battle the Red River. - It was a freaking disaster, which they just fix this last year. For 27 years what was supposed to be a A1 hwy was basically gravel rd.
I'm not knocking that mine or the north, but the south has been neglected. Our Ag Economy depends on good travel routes.
I would love to have overpasses at the mentioned places, but that's not going to happen.
At least not in my lifetime. I will take smooth RTAC Highways / proper bridges before interchanges.
MTI does need to get their 🞵🞵🞵🞵 together and make intersections more safe. I live in Hanover / Labroquerie area moved here in Early 91 maybe 10-15 thousand people back then now ---pushing 60,000 . No improvements to Highways at all.
Hwy 52 / 12 / 59 are all gong shows during morning /evening commute. accidents weekly, bad ones / drivers with no gawdamm patience / argh.....
bad tangent.... i think its bedtime.

Highway 52/59 is an excellent example of a high priority. I support that. High volume. High danger. It warrants spending. Highway 5 does too.

TCH overpasses will happen. I'll keep showing all the ways they are possible.

Hard decisions just have to be made.

Agree. But that still doesn't change the Perimeter shortage ($2 billion?). The City of Winnipeg shortage ($10 billion). Or the North Eastern Reserves who still don't even have a year round road (~$3 billion). Or any bypasses.

MB has a huge hole. We can't be wasting.

Aside from Deacon's (tricky), the top 5 important TCH overpasses could likely be done for $200m TOTAL. (Carberry, Yellowhead, Oakville, Elie, Hwy 206). That's a $40m budget each. Very doable for rural overpasses.

Annual MB road budget is ~$500m. All 5 could be completed in 1yr to 1.5yrs with proper execution.

So TCH is actually pretty low hanging fruit. Until otherwise, it's our problem to solve.

as for flash sigh whats that?

u should drive the 391 sometime see how bad it is

highways barly does pot holes hence the deck of that bridge getting so bad in leaf. would think they would take pails of patch in the back of their trucks when they go out every morning nope and when they take the big truck out what they patch never makes any sens

The trailer mounted variable message sign is what I was thinking of. Same ones used for Construction Ahead, Deer Crossing, lane ends, etc. Almost any short message can be entered in the controller to display on the board.

Provincial Road 311 reopened the bridge going over the Manning Canal near New Bothwell. They built the bridge higher so it's less prone to flooding.

They also added a 4-way stop at the Intersection of 311 and 206. 311 traffic were previously required to slow down to 70KM/H, but people would still go 100KM/H. I was thinking they were going to leave it, but this was the perfect opportunity for a 4-way stop.

That's one of the many junctions in Southeastern Manitoba where I always thought a roundabout should be considered. But 52 and 59 needs roundabouts or traffic signals throughout its path.

59 and 52 are on the short list for twinning. If the province ever gets some money, and the recent trend of round abouts, maybe they consider one at that location.

The 4 way was added while the bridge was being reconstructed. Hard to say if they'll leave that in place.

I'm sure they will until they can warrant a roundabout. Eventually a 4-way stop will cause traffic backups when it exceeds its capacity

The throne speech yesterday contained a reference to the consultation and design work being underway for the “first phase of twinning of the trans-Canada highway east”. No new news there, but was glad to see it because that project started under the previous government, will probably be expensive and I worried it might be on the chopping block. If they put it in the speech that would suggest they’re still committed. No reference to any other highway projects unfortunately.

^There has been nothing publicly stated beyond the public consultation that was done about a year ago. I've heard very expensive from some people involved, which is no surprise.

Maybe MTI is working to consult with the locals. Otherwise nothing new on this one.

FYI Google Maps is updated with a portion of the new twinned section at the MB/ON border.

The only two Hwy projects the NDP are committed to are the Hwy 1 East twinning and the Perimeter Hwy freeway projects.
