cosigning CT, hearty welcome to Austin. Welcome, welcome, welcome.

Austin is indeed a very special city, and watching it grow has been one of the true joys of my life. There is so much opportunity here, and even more coming. As someone who moved here at 18 with lint in my pocket, and nothing more. Austin was and continues to be welcoming, upwardly mobile filled with loads of economic opportunities, optimism, youthful, vibrant, plenty of dating options, kid and dog friendly....and a good mix of political diversity (blue dot-red state), where the hippies, freaks, yuppies and red necks all show up to a Willie concert. The BIGGEST reason Austin is special, is the people. Compared to other cities, the VAST number of people you will meet are friendly....and quick to chat. While some other cities offer more amenities, none come close to the friendliness of Austin.

This forum is special too. Dedicated members keep it filled daily with quality content and the mods are great at letting people go off the rails a bit, but use their velvet gloves to right the track as needed without being overbearing. Can't remember the last time I noticed a bonafide troll.

I predict we are just getting started.

Where are you currently?

Thank you, I agree with everything you wrote.

Austin has so much going for it and it will soon be a top-tier city if it isn't already.

The best part is most of the people I met there in person were so hospitable. Everyone I ran across seemed content, no bitterness or arrogance.

I currently live in Phoenix, Arizona. It's not a bad place, all things considered. I won't elaborate too much for now but I'll just say that it's trying with all its might to be a top-tier city but it just can't get there, not anywhere close in fact.

Most of all I can't take any more Phoenix summers. Climate change and the sprawling concrete jungle have made the heat factor even worse.

Austin doesn't have the best summers either but I know they are more tolerable.

Anyway I look forward to being an Austin resident. I am very encouraged by what I have seen of the city thus far.

I'm still cooling down from this summer. I know we don't have anything on Phoenix, but dang...

Welcome! I was on your boat before. I was a huge lurker from the Bay Area and I mentioned in the Austin side that I can't wait to live here and help update the threads with photos

Hell, even during my first visit here my friends were VERY surprised I even knew the area and where to go haha.

Whenever someone asks me why I moved to Austin, I mention construction/development as it brings a lot of joy in my life. Can't wait for you to be here and be a part of it!

Whitis Court Redevelopment

Per Reddit, Whitis Court will be demolished in 2024. UT is partnering with a developer to redevelop the property with more housing.

Quote:
On behalf of the university, the 2033 Higher Education Development Foundation (2033 Fund) is seeking a developer to design, build, and potentially finance, operate, and/or maintain the student accommodation.

Located at Whitis Court residence hall, the new development will replace the six buildings on the site that currently contain a combined 210 beds.

As well as maximizing the density of the site, the developer may also have potential to provide a dining facility as part of the development.

Interested parties have until August 7, 2023 to submit their responses to the RFQ, which can be acquired from Taylor Thompson via email at [email protected]

Anyone know of what's going on with the former Carmelo's Restaurant parking lot? (5th/Red River) Earlier this year just before SXSW, there was a fence around it. Looked like ground breaking was imminent. I figured they removed the fence just temporarily for SXSW parking, but nine months later it's still the same.

Assuming you saw the original thread -- https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=247603 . . . .

Good question. I've been wondering about this one as well. Seemed primed to start during the summer, but nothing in quite awhile.

Thanks for the link! I was starting to think it was my imagination that there was a fence there at the beginning of the year. Yes I did know about pending high-rise development -- wonder what happened. I guess we'll all find out soon enough. Hope they didn't chop the height in half!

Former Nau's Enfield Drug faces mixed-use retail, residential future

What was once a cherished part of the rich history of Austin is now in the planning stages of being redeveloped. The Austin American-Statesman reports that the beloved Nau's Enfield Drug building, located in Austin's Clarksville neighborhood, could be changed into a mixed-use residential and retail project.

The new Austin-based owner, Zydeco Development Co, purchased the property and three others this fall for an undisclosed price. Zydeco is planning for a possible five-story development after recently meeting with the Old Austin neighborhood Association and Clarksville neighbors, according to the Statesman.

Plans were discussed to include rezoning the area to 25 to 30 condominiums, retail shops, and underground parking for 120 vehicles.

More retail would be nice for the area. Don't love the amount of associated parking but at least it's underground.

Here is the latest 8-Week update. The speed of progress has really picked up these last several weeks, and 700 River has now topped out.
