A site plan was filed today by Stonelake for the former Camelo's site at 504 E. 5th. It's a residential project called "5RR". No height info yet.

I'm a little disappoint that it's 100% residential. Carmelo's is still a great spot for a boutique hotel -- especially with some quality adaptive reuse of those historic structures.

I was hopeful we could maybe add a complementary Hilton brand -- a Conrad, for instance -- to draft off the big Hilton's group business. Ah well. I guess the second best use is to house people.

Stonelake is also developing the residential tower that replaced Tower 5C. They seem to have a lot on their plate right now. The only other residential high-rise that they have developed as far as I can tell is the Bowen in the Domain.

Heck, even if they're rentals - I would not want to live in that area.

Hotel...yes - agree. But, it is no place for a luxury brand like Conrad.

These will be rentals. Stonelake’s residential portfolio only consists of multifamily.

Ditto. I don't even like walking over there during the day. If you guys don't know what we're talking about, take a trip over there and hang out for an hour or so. things are going down every time I go by, and not in a good way. The area would be perfect for revamping, but there's gotta be a will to make it happen. right now our city council seems as interested in chaos as much as they do having a clean safe city brought to you by the tax payer and tourism. hopefully things will improve.

Yeah, 6th St. right now is pretty awful, no argument. But there's enough afoot from a development standpoint to start pushing back on the awfulness quite a bit. It's 5-7 years in the future, but it's happening. Avenue Lofts, Brush Square rehab, lots of transit, convention center, Railyard, 4th and Brazos, sundry Western Expansion parcels. And a general focus from the city on the Waller Creek corridor.

If Carmelo's was on its own -- not a part of a wave of development -- I would be much less enthused.

If this ends up happening, we'll be replacing a boarded up meth lab/organ harvesting facility/set from the SAW movies with a residential building that people actually live in. Hard to imagine a greater 180% turn in the urban fabric than that.

..."Stonelake Managing Partner Kenneth Aboussie confirmed in a July 15 email that the company intends to construct a 37-story residential high-rise on the site with 250 units. Stonelake has tabbed Gensler's Austin office to design the building, while GarzaEMC is on board as the civil engineer. The working name for the project is Stonelake | 5RR."

I'd like it if I didn't feel like we already had a few of these buildings already.

I get that we're going for sleek, but is it so hard to give it a touch of character? At least tweak the glass color or the cladding or something.
