Like I said, I don't care too much about whatever city Musk wants to build near Bastrop, but 4-5 story beehives are better than single-family homes in the heart of the city.

A piece of Marfa is coming to Austin, in time for South by Southwest, in the form of an amphitheater inspired by Austin hotelier Liz Lambert’s latest vision of El Cosmico, her nomadic hotel, campground and attraction in Marfa.

The project is being built as a partnership among Lambert, architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group and Icon, which is an Austin-based, 3D-printing construction company.

The 3D-printed performance pavilion stage will make its debut at SXSW this year and will be the location where Icon plans to host a special event with live music, food trucks and refreshments 3:30 p.m. March 15. Icon said the amphitheater, which is a single sculptural piece designed to serve as a landmark and gathering space, is a gift to the city and the Long Center. It will take two weeks to print.

Ballard said the Austin project will be the first 3D-printed amphitheater pavilion music venue in the world.

The space will be able to host about 1,000 people at a show.

Project Summary

This project consists of design and construction of a new approximately 212,205 GSF Engineering Discovery Building (EDB) for critically needed research, teaching, and collaboration space for the Cockrell School of Engineering. Upon completion it will be a replacement for the existing and aging Chemical & Petroleum Engineering (CPE) building.

Project Location: This project is located on the site of the existing Services Building (SER), which will be vacated and demolished. Current departments housed in the SER will relocate to the expanded Facilities Complex Building 4 (FC4) building. The new EDB will be adjacent to the Engineering Education and Research Building (EER) and the Gary L. Thomas Energy Engineering Building (GLT).

It's finallllly happening with W 5th! By the end of this decade that street will have so much retail, residential and hospitality. It kind of has a similar vibe to West Hollywood...of course on a much much smaller scale.

Oh, and that brickwork + roof awning is how you do mid-rise development.

Pivoting to something different could mean a number of things, Lickteig said, including shifting away from office and toward other uses such as residential, retail or hospitality.

Factors affecting the office market include fears of recession, layoffs at technology companies and the country continuing to figure out hybrid and remote work in a post-pandemic world, Lickteig said.

“I think demand has slowed to some degree,” he said. “We have a historic amount of supply that’s under construction, and we’re just going to have to be patient and wait this out and see where the market lands. I don’t know if that will take 12 months or 36 months.
