Anyone think WS or any of the other Canadian carriers will add flights to the new airport in Tulum, Mexico? Sea Delta just became the first US carrier to announce flights there. Might be a nicer choice compared to CUN if your staying down that way.

For above the wing it just so happens that it happened right after 10 years since AA had it's own staff. Interestingly enough, the union had 10 year recall rights for laid off workers. Coincidence?

Swissport is loosing contracts like crazy these days, wondering how much longer Swissport and ATS can survive in YYC.

I think the Canadian carriers are interested but will wait to see the airport actually operational for a season or two before going in. It's hard to want to be first to an airport like this where your crews are flying 5+hrs each way and still have new airport operational kinks to work out; you don't want your crew and aircraft spending the night due to a crew timing out. Let others test the waters and then go for it.

I think it's very reasonable to assume that WS will start YYC-TQO and AC will start YYZ-TQO sooner than later.

Will there be enough demand to support YYC-Tulum? Aren't most of the resorts located between PDC and Cancun, closer to CUN.

While we do have up to 3X daily WS YYC-Cancun mid-winter, I don't think we've ever had service to the other airport in the region, CZM Cozumel, which is arguably a bigger catchment area than new Tulum. WS has operated this route ex-YYZ previously.

I do think AC and WS could start YYZ-Tulum relatively soon post opening. They don't need to wait a full season, TQO won't be anymore or less disorganized than any other Mexican airport (and bags will be delivered quicker than what is the norm at YYC these days anyways).

According to google, PDC is exactly the same distance to CUN or TQO airport. So I guess the question is how many passengers are going to PDC or south. When I went every year I’d definitely would have gone to the new airport if it was a choice then. Avoiding the gong show of CUN and that highway would be an easy choice

My money would be on Merida (MID) first. Rather than it being a brand new airport in a new destination, it's a place where WS has existing business and a good (and growing) track record.

Merida is a booming destination for visitors and snowbirds from western Canada, but it's often a big challenge to get there from here. None of the connection options from YYC (IAH on UA, DFW on AA, YYZ on WS) work great in both directions -- meaning that many people split their travel between carriers ... or do a pretty long drive from CUN, where there are lots of non-stops plus competition among airlines.

This winter, WS doubled their capacity into MID from 1x/weekly to 2x -- all from YYZ. From observation, a whole lot of people on those flights are western Canadians. (Same on UA and AA; you'll always see people from the YYC segment connecting on to MID.)

Daily YYC-YOW on PD starting Feb 14. I think this will do better than their YYZ flights?

I hope thats the case! Just curious what is bringing on the optimism?

Westjet and sunwing combined move a huge amount of traffic into CUN, so I don't see why they couldn't make Tulum flight work. Probably start YYZ as well so you don't need to overnight crews.
