The way it was built, it's sort of like stretching your arm out and holding a weight. You can do it for a while, but eventually your arm gives out. It's a similar scenario for the beams holding up the North Side roof; they're stretching out, sort of freestanding, to hold the roof. After 46 years, they had to relieve the pressure by cutting back the roof.
I'm sure they could have done something to keep the full roof, maybe add bracing, but they probably opted to cut it back for financial reasons.
