Before even trying to complain about construction hurdles and using that against me, have a look at what Highway 1 construction is doing to Guildford at the moment. Unfortunately it's all part of the process, but this does not nearly have to be like what the Millenium Line construction did to Surrey Travel in 2002. There are ways to construct that switch without having to close the actual Skytrain operations. Assuming an end result that would be similar to just east of Lougheed Station, you could construct the switch one side at a time; start with the eastern side, and when that portion of the switch is complete start the western side. You would have to single track between Gateway & Central & King George, but the service is still there; being two stations it is probably not going to be a huge issue. There's also plenty of alternatives this time: if there is absolutely a need to, reroute a few of the major bus routes to go to Gateway for awhile, or reroute more traffic to use buses that go past there such as the 335. In any case, such construction would only last a month at most.
