The Liberal lead is not falling as of this date. With Abacus, the Liberals took the lead for the first time in their polling 38-37, after polls showing them behind by 3 or more points in the prior week. Some other polls have the Liberals up by 8 points(Angus Reid, Liaison).

We should have a good idea if the CPC had closed the gap in a week or so. The first week of the campaign has been an unmitigated disaster for them. If they can pull it together in the final month, they may still be able to win. However I can't see it happening.

He may not. Trump is so unpredictable. Carney has handled him well, insisting he would only take Trump's calls if he cut out the BS about the 51st state, and not to address him as "Governor." This could have a positive effect for the Liberals.

My gut feeling is that Trump is going to delay tariffs for another month, probably at the last minute. If not, Carney will retaliate.

You are correct. And the Bloc will lose lots of seats if Blanchet continues what he is doing. Trump is trying to start an economic war and threaten annexation but why not continue talking about how great Quebec sovereignty would be and keep blaming Ottawa for all of the problems.

I thought that PP and the Conservatives would be coming up with something more interesting but they haven't. They haven't even released any new ads since the election campaign began! I've been reading that there has been a lot of arguing and disagreements among those running the campaign. They supposedly had some Carney attack ads ready but then pulled back on them as they were too risky and could turn off many voters.

The popular vote in polls doesn't determine who will actually win. It's something we always have to remember in our system.

Here's some foreign interference from Fox News:

With federal election looming, Liberal Canadian PM accused of plagiarism while studying at Oxford: report
Carney, an open critic of President Trump, is up for election April 28

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing allegations that he copied parts of his 1995 doctoral thesis at Oxford University without proper credit. The report comes as he's seeking election to remain the country's PM next month, when Canadian voters head to the polls on April 28.

The National Post reviewed Carney’s thesis, "The Dynamic Advantage of Competition," with three university experts, who found at least 10 instances of apparent plagiarism.

The experts told the National Post that Carney copied full quotes, paraphrased ideas, and slightly modified sentences from four different sources without giving proper credit.

CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER MARK CARNEY SAYS 'OLD RELATIONSHIP' WITH US 'IS OVER' AMID TENSION OVER TRUMP TARIFFS

"He's just directly repeating without quotations. That’s plagiarism," said Geoffrey Sigalet, a professor at the University of British Columbia who helps handle academic misconduct cases, told the National Post.

Carney’s campaign responded to the National Post with a statement from his former Oxford supervisor, Margaret Meyer, who dismissed the allegations. "I see no evidence of plagiarism in the thesis," she said. "Mark’s work was thoroughly researched and approved by a faculty committee."

Meyer also told the National Post that "it is typical that overlapping language appears" if sources are regularly referenced.

Oxford University defines plagiarism as "presenting work or ideas from another source as your own without full acknowledgment." Another professor, speaking anonymously to the National Post, said Carney’s thesis appears to meet that definition.

Carney’s campaign spokesperson, Isabella Orozco-Madison, called the accusations an "irresponsible mischaracterization" of his work.

One of the key examples from the National Post’s report shows Carney closely copying a passage from economist Michael E. Porter’s 1990 book, "The Competitive Advantage of Nations." On page 206 of his thesis, Carney wrote: "First, government intervention can impede international competition and artificially support domestic profits." This is nearly identical to Porter’s original wording.

Carney also reportedly copied sections from Jeremy C. Stein’s 1989 article in The Quarterly Journal of Economics and H.S. Shin’s 1994 article in The RAND Journal of Economics, with only minor wording changes.

The possible plagiarism appears throughout the thesis. "It’s all over the dissertation, not just one part," said Sigalet. Even small wording changes without proper citation are still considered plagiarism.

Oxford University warns that plagiarism is a serious offense that can lead to penalties, including expulsion. "Even when you reword something, you still need to cite the source," Sigalet added.

Carney, a former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor, has had a high-profile career, including top roles at Goldman Sachs and Brookfield Asset Management. He has faced criticism for his elite background and globalist tendencies.

However, plagiarism allegations have led to resignations and revoked degrees for politicians and academics in the past.

Last year, Harvard University’s president Claudine Gay stepped down amid plagiarism claims, though she denied wrongdoing.

Carney is an outspoken critic of President Trump amid ongoing tariff battles between Canada and the U.S.

The National Post contributed to this report.

---------------------------

This didn't become a story in Canada. Most people here are smart enough to realize that if plagiarism had actually taken place that Carney wouldn't have gotten in trouble and not received the degree that he did. Of course Trump and Maple MAGA supporters are mainly uneducated and buy what that article claims.

The sub-headline calling Carney an "open critic" of Trump made me laugh. And of course the comments are quite insane and inaccurate. "Carney is a communist" and stuff like that.

I have some questions about the polls:
Do they contain information about respondents, i.e. age distribution, occupation, renting/owning (an estate), etc.?
It’ll be interesting to see the breakdown of voter intention by these categories.
If LPC consistently leads across all categories, then it’s game-over for CPC.
Otherwise, LPC may still win, but the election will be more like Biden vs Trump, not Wynne vs Hudak.
The polls will be even less reliable if some categories are missing.

Neither side is immune. But the one that is now leading on this front is the CPC. The LPC tossed out their chief culture warrior.
Here’s the post, I was referring to. Sorry I tagged you in the wrong one. But you said he didn’t want to reduce our dependency on the US.

No thesis required when you buy an undergrad degree.

If the election were held today. It's still too soon to call, although the clock is ticking.

As I said earlier, his version of "reduce dependency" is a pipeline and change of few internal trade rules while sending $19B for F-35s to the US.

Now I don't believe it's practical to fully disengage from the US. But I think people want to see at least sentiment and a willingness to craft a strategy. You don't get that energy from this guy. It comes off as just a desire to tinker. Compare that to Carney's declaration that our old relationship with the US is over. I think this is closer to where most Canadians actually are.

Another tax incentive policy but I like the underlying goal/incentivization:

Again, we might need to check whether that sentiment differs drastically from one generation to another (although one may argue that, even if the younger generation, aged between 18 and 35, is at best indifferent, they don't form a substantial voting block to sway the election outcome). Even right now, I'm still skeptical that the generation feeling completely screwed over by their parents shares in that level of patriotism (or in that sense of existential crisis), although I am also not sure if people like @P'tit_Renard represent the younger generation ( ).
That said, I admit that, if I were working in the auto industry, I'd be having sleepless nights right now.
Trump has surely successfully divided the Canadians.

You are complaining the Conservatives are not showing a strategy to disengage with the US and your counterexample is....Liberal rhetoric...which may not be worth much.

Carney said "the old relationship with the US is over"...but also the very next day put out the statement saying he cordial call with Trump and would work on a new agreement the US without giving details.

Breakdown of Mainstreet Poll: 181 seats (LPC majority)

Breakdown of Abacus Poll: 165 seats (strong LPC minority), plus their likely voter model has LPC +2

Also, Nanos is out this morning... LPC +5 (LPC majority)

That would be the start of the new relationship, no? Details to be negotiated.

New CBC Poll Tracker out today. Things getting gloomier for PP:

LPC - 41.2%, 194 seats
CPC - 37.8%, 125 seats
BLQ - 5.8%, 20 seats
NDP - 9.1%, 3 seats
GRN - 2.8%, 1 seat
PPC - 2.3%, 0 seats

Liberal plurality increases by four seats from yesterday, mostly at the expence of the Bloc (with one seat from the NDP).
