Hmmm...

I don't want to troll or start a flame war or anything, but I just don't much care for this building.

The massing looks clunky.

I fail to see the point of the ripples in the facade. The ripples would look better and more interesting on a smaller and shorter building. I think you loose a lot of the effect and detail of the ripples on the higher floors.

I'm also not to crazy about it blocking views of the Woolworth Building.

I also think the Aqua in Chicago pulled off the same wavy effect much more effortlessly.

I admire Frank Gehry and acknowledge his many contributions to modern architecture. I'm a big fan of the Walt Disney Center in LA, but this building just leaves me clammy.

Tex,

Strangely, I've been having similar thoughts (almost word for word) for months.

HOWEVER, I'm always one never to really judge a building till I see it in person, so I have hesitated.

But yeah, other than the whimsy in seeing gehry drape an 800'+ skyscraper, there doesn't appear to me to be anything really innovative or even interesting about the tower. The massing seems incredibly odd.

But I digress, I once really disliked Fosters HSBC Building in Hong Kong...till I saw it in person. Maybe this is just one of those buildings that doesn't photograph well.

Maybe, or maybe it's just a really interesting exploration in facade technology, not unlike the New York Times Tower. That in and of itself doesn't change what I see as an odd massing/stacking plan.

But alas, I might think very differently once I've walked entirely around this thing in living color.

This building is something you have to experience yourself in order to draw a convictional opinion. All I’ll say is that this tower is a one of a kind, unlike anything this city or most places in the world have ever seen. I know this wavy architecture is present in many of his works, but in this context, it’s an all new concept.

Beekman Place could have went on to become a classic, an icon for the 21st century. Yet it is a failure for its less than stellar podium and for its flat-sided face which is in complete discord with the tower's general form.

Lesson be learned... Whatever you do in this lifetime, do it one hundred percent or not at all.

Dac150

Beekman Place could for its flat-sided face which is in complete discord with the tower's general form.

I disagree, if anything the flat side emphasizes the character the rest of the building has. As for the base, it’s a school, there’s only so much you can do with that in terms of design.

scalziand
May 29, 2010, 8:45 PM
I don't have a problem with the single flat wall or the contrasting podium. I do have a problem with how the setbacks are arranged, with tall, then short, then tall sections again. It ruins the rhythm of the tower.

uaarkson
May 30, 2010, 12:30 AM
I think the massing will look a lot better when the cladding is finished and the skip removed. As it is, having the cladding halfway up the last set back gives the appearance of an extra one.

I'm sort of bugged, by the small set backs. It seems the building needs to be set back more, or not at all.

The arrangement of the setbacks seems fine by me. The last, tall section makes the rythm dynamic. The position of the setbacks also refers to the buildings around, especially the Wollworth.

Yet it is a failure for its less than stellar podium and for its flat-sided face which is in complete discord with the tower's general form.

I totally agree. Beekman is different and I think some people misinterpret that from greatness. Like most of Ghery's work, I think we will look back on its unique brand of postmodernism in 10-20 years and find it dated and a gimmicky. It is an original facade (still with the qualifiers above), has distictive L-shpae massing, and it adds a great new texture, material, and color to the downtown skyline, but half the building was practically abandonded architecturally. Its a real cop-out to say that a blank wall emphasizes the other wall's "greatness." Not only are the other walls flat, but they dont even really communicate with the other faces aside from the fact they are clad in a similar material. Beekman is really mundane from these angles, which is why they are practically never photographed here. The arthictecure in this area is rich and distinctive and I feel Beekmen only offers a superficial contribution.

There's been no skyscraper of this scale built in the country (at least in the past decade or few) that compares to the beauty of this tower.

I think there are several in New York alone.

I don't know but this building doesn't really stand out from all the others, maybe I have to see it in person. Well I'm going in August so ill have to see till then. And I'm not too crazy about the top of the building, they should've done more with it. But I do like the facade, I think its like no other building I have ever seen. It looks as though the metal is melting

juless72 didn't show the worst part about that model... If you look at the south side of the model, you'll see the currently flat side was definitely supposed to flow like the rest of the sides of the building, and it looks awesome. :(

That exposed mechanicals/vent box on the top of the model really knocks this skyscraper down a few pegs. If it looks like that in real life it'll be a testament to the cost cutting along with the south facade. They really need a spire or crown on this thing.

I think that model might have excluded the 2 story parapet walls that are hiding the mechanicals.

Jun 14, 2010, 4:32 PM
^ I agree, that model is not accurate regarding the mechanicals on top. Which I consider a good thing!

No it DOESN'T need a spire.

A spire on this building would look absolutely hideous and would not match the avant garde style of this building one bit.

Spires are "elegant", this building is not supposed to look elegant. It's supposed to be harsh and edgy.

It's stunning the way it is. Leave it alone.

K, people, there will be NO box on this building. This is obviously a very early model with vast differences with the final product.

Took this yesterday right after the SOUNDS LIKE PAPER 2010 Free summer concert with DRAKE, Hanson @ Seaport which erupted into Riot and madness. Stood in the crowd over 3 hours and the concert didn't even happen NYPD shut down due to throwing bottles, chair, brawls, climbing on the rooftops etc...

NYC4Life

Perhaps, the most photographed skyscaper under construction (besides 1WTC). This tower screams photos.

RoldanTTLB
Jun 19, 2010, 4:19 AM
Tallest by roof height. 80 Pine and 40 Wall have spires that are taller. All 4 (if all are built) WTC towers will be taller, though.
