I don't exactly what mix they are using, but in general, high-strength concrete can obtain half of its strength after a couple days and 3/4 after a week.

WOW, that tower is rising fast... thank GOD the Dead of Hand of Government - in this case, the PA - has nothing to do with it.

Now now! I have no doubt the PA could slap up a building like this just as fast based on the engineering requirements. I know we have short memories, but this place sat for a long time as a hole in the ground with a tower crane not doing anything. That's not cheap. And then, not a few months ago, it sat for nearly 6 months on the 38th floor while Ratner fought with unions. This building is flying right now, but it wasn't always so cut and dry. The really odd asymmetry of the building is also due to late design changes based on NIMBYs in the neighboring building.

Anyway, I just want you to all know that I'm willing to stand in the middle of the street for you guys if I have to...

Quick update...
http://lowermanhattan.info/construction/project_updates/beekman_tower_8_spruce_83718.aspx

*The following information was last updated on August 26, 2009.

-Superstructure erection is underway, now at 57 stories
-The concrete superstructure should be completed by May 2010
-Curtain wall installation continues and should be completed by August 2010.
-The brick facade on the lower stories is complete.

That May seems a little off at this rate, but we'll see.

So essentially a year from now the building should be all said and done. Not bad, but I think it may top out sooner than May given the current rate. Either way I’m looking forward to it being my next door neighbor in just a week.

Here's a variety of photos from the last few days. It's nearly impossible for me to capture just how shiny this thing is in the morning with the camera I have. Additionally, a few small notes... I have never seen a building's concrete coloumns move around as this one's have as it has shot up. It's ridiculous. Also, they are installing a matching metal cap (pediment, I suppose) to the base of the tower all the way around. I actually think the base will look very nice ones all the small touches are in and the construction has cleared.

Similar in theme( i.e. undulating facade), different, as you pointed out, in execution. I would wait until Beekman is completed before I make a direct comparison, but, thusfar I consider it a more daring execution of that theme, even with the flat south face.

Wow, this thing is a monster!

I think the issue is we are so used to 900' foot buildings which have 200' of fluff on top, and a very slight profile towards the top. This thing is a tank all the way to the roof.

In effect, this really is a 1000' building, they just didn't put the usual 'stuff' on the roof (spire and such).

Once this thing is done, I have a feeling there will be some serious international attention paid to it (simply because it will be seen and photographed so clearly).

This building will look great in any kind of weather.

Yup, and I say the same for 11 Times Square.

Its facade also reminds me of a snake's sensuous skin, rippling but still muscular. And considering I love snakes, it makes me love the tower all the more :D

Does this building not have a web site? Google turns up not a whole lot.

It's the tallest building in those last shots. Is it still a rental, or will it revert back to condos? Half and half? Rent to own? (I doubt that...).

Got stuck on the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday waiting for Pres Obama's motorcade to pass underneath on the FDR. The result is the mass of people on the bridge, and this shot of the Beekman rising in the distance...

Evergreen Cemetery? I know the church in that image is on Broadway in Bushwick/Bed-Stuy and it's the only place I could imagine having a wooded hill with a view in that direction...

Amazing the tower is at 65 stories tall, with yet another 11 floors to go. Such an impact the unfinished tower already has on the skyline.

Not sure, being that it's residential. It would be nice.

^ I'm also curious about lighting. But, like NYGuy said, it highly unlikely that a residential tower would be displayed in such a fashion. I imagine lighting being to intrusive to the residents. But, it would be awesome.

This is NYC lighting is supposed to be displayed. With the great location of this tower lighting is also supposed to be displayed. We didn't block the view of the Woolworth to see no lighting.

^I understand your passion for seing this building displayed, as it should be because it is spectacular. And, I honestly hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see exterior night lighting of the facade happening if it interferes with the quality of life for the residents in the building and those in the surrounding area. Perhaps something can be rigged for those special occasions or holidays ( i.e. red and green lighting for Christmas).

I wouldn't bet on it. Maybe something at the top, but I agree it should have something. The great towers are not supposed to disappear into the night. That was the thinking behind a lot of the lighting we see now in the city.
