Look back a few pages, you'd see this tower is doing just fine and is moving at a steady pace. Granted, the cladding is taking longer then most other buildings, probably due to its unique nature

Engineering News Record has an article with some nice technical details about the cladding.

New York’s Tallest Residential Tower Is Frank Gehry ‘Demystified’

Team uses collaboration and digital tools to produce architect’s most expansive draped facade

03/24/2010
By Nadine M. Post

http://enr.ecnext.com/comsite5/bin/comsite5.pl?page=enr_document&item_id=0271-56976&format_id=XML

...The facade’s success relied on several strategies. One was the development of a traditional unitized curtain-wall system for the wall’s air-and-water barrier, with an outer rain screen for the wild shapes. Unitized systems are unusual for residential towers, especially rental ones. “For the size and scale of the project,” however, it had to have a unitized system, says John Bowers, Gehry’s project manager.
...
During the design-assist phase, PNA, with Gehry, developed a set of rules to turn the wall’s free-form shapes into something that could be mass-produced. The goal was to minimize the expense of a double curvature and maximize more economic, “rule-able” surfaces.

The phase, which included developing the entire panelization scheme and keeping the curvature within the budget, took more than two years. “You can’t do a job like this without design-assist,” says Michael Budd, executive vice president in PNA’s Mendota, Minn., office. Strong collaboration is needed to get to the required level of definition, he adds.

PNA used finite-element analysis to reduce the free-form shapes to single curves. Gehry refined the shapes, based on PNA rules, so that more than 90% of the surface has a single curvature. This was accomplished by slight segmentation at the panel joints, says Budd.
...
Panel installation started about a year ago and is scheduled to be topped out in September. “There is no appreciable cost premium for the ‘premium’ curtain wall,” says Rechichi.

In the end, of 10,911 rectangular panels for 427,734 sq ft of the eight-sided tower, there are only 1,888 repetitive units. There are 1,568 shaped column-cover units, 2,178 flat column-cover units and 5,177 shaped spandrel units with glass. The 9-ft, 10-in.-tall units vary 3.5 ft to 7.5 ft in width. All the glass is flat.

Each shaped unit is unique. Permasteelisa managed to cold-bend 70% of the panels, mechanically rolling only the tighter geometries. Cold-bending, which is the most economical method, curves the metal to its yield point.

There is also a nice slideshow (http://enr.construction.com/buildings/design/2010/extras/0324/slideshow.asp?slide=1) too.

The Beekman has been going at a very fast pace. They complete a floor of cladding in about less than a week. I was actually surprised when I read that the facade would be topped out in September.

The Woolworth is from another era. Not many (if any) buildings today will compare to that kind of class. Check this post from the Woolworth thread:

But as far as sheer skyline beauty and presence goes, I think Beekman beats it.

^ Maybe they'e still working on it, or maybe they're just trying to lay low for now, like Bank of America. Maybe they'll wait for things to pick up again before they start flashing those new HQs. BofA at least has a "grand opening" celebration in a couple of weeks.

I think, more than any other skyscraper I've seen under construction, this one gets exponentially more beautiful as the cladding is installed. When the last piece is in place and the elevator comes down, it will be as if a light bulb had come on over Manhattan's head.

Spruce Street School Looks for Cameo in 9/11 Documentary
The school hopes to get enough online votes to win a $25,000 grant for the film.

Just a few days after the Spruce Street School moves into its new Frank Gehry-designed building next year, New York will commemorate the 10-year anniversary of 9/11.

Spruce Principal Nancy Harris wants to record both events in a documentary film.

“It’s about our evolution and the community’s evolution,” Harris said. “It’s been a long process, both for our school and for the community.”

Just as the World Trade Center rebuilding has been plagued by setbacks, so has Spruce.

The Spruce Street School was originally supposed to open in 2008 in the base of a rippling steel tower Gehry designed, just a few blocks from the World Trade Center site. But the opening was delayed by money battles between the state and city, along with developer Bruce Ratner’s trouble getting construction financing.

While waiting for its final home to be ready, Spruce welcomed its first kindergarteners last fall in temporary space in Tweed Courthouse. The school will grow to serve about 150 kindergarteners and first graders there this fall.

Harris envisions the documentary as a poignant way to look forward on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, while at the same time capturing her fledgling school’s first days in a brand-new skyscraper downtown.

“It is a very personal connection for me — the way things come full circle,” Harris said.

Elda Rotor, a Spruce parent leader, said the documentary would also teach Spruce students about their place in the larger community.

“Hopefully these children will become peacemakers, giving back to the world,” Rotor said.

To fund the film, Harris applied for a $25,000 grant through the Pepsi Refresh Project, which awards $1.3 million each month to nonprofit causes that get the most online votes.

The Spruce documentary project is now ranked 112th in its category and needs to rise to No. 10 or higher to get the money.

People can vote every day through May 31, when this month’s winners will be decided.

Even if the Spruce documentary does not win the grant, Harris hopes she can still find a way make the film.

“Every person in this community has a story,” she said.

I'd be the first to admit that I am not a fan of Frank Gehry's style. However, he really struck gold with this one. Beekman is a beauty.

it's about time downtown gets some classy skyscrapers. and you're right, 99 church street will be a great addition, can't wait till construction resumes. watching all these new towers going up in downtown right now is a very pleasant experience, day by day.
