The airplane company is a major win for the area. To fill that many jobs, people will come from a hour or more radius to work. Or they will locate themselves throughout the greater area. The airport is located on the western side of Guilford and is a very short trip from WS and Kernersville.

Also, the potential suppliers and other businesses that support the company will locate themselves across the area. They often don't want to located too close so not to cannibalize the labor force.

Seems as if there is more of W-S in Charlotte now (from all of the other company moves) than Charlotte.
I'm with you on that. And it's happening faster than I expected. Looks like we'll wave goodbye to WFU Medical as we have to Piedmont, Wachovia, BB&T, Krispy Kreme, and others that have left WS for the great city to our south.

It seems as if Major League Baseball is possibly exapanding again, and Charlotte and Raleigh are on the list. If the State is really interested in equal distribution of major league sports as announced (at one time anyway) then why is the so-called Triad not on the list? Charlotte's CSA is just over 3 million and Raleigh's is just over 2 million while the Triad is at almost 2 million. So, why not the Triad? Recall, in 1997-1998 there was a major push to woo the Minnesota Twins to the Triad with the stadium to be built straddling the Forsyth-Guildford boundary. I do not recall but I think Forsyth very narrowly defeated or approved (not sure) while Guildford soundly deafeated the peoposal based on tax issues, which as I recall would have been 1 cent per person. Anyway, one suspects other reasons why it was defeated. It seems as if the Triad ought to throw its hat into this ring (again) as well, thereby having major league sports in the three major CSAs in the State.

Forsyth voters rejected the proposal by a 59% to 41% margin, which was better than Guilford voters’ 67% to 33% margin. The turnout was almost 38% in Forsyth and nearly 33% in Guilford — about twice the normal primary pattern.

Major League Baseball is the most difficult sport for a market to support. Filling around 38,000 seats, 162 days out-of-the-year. The Triad had the corporate support 30 years ago, but not now. The Triad has never really had the population to support MLB and was dependent on fans traveling 100 miles/160 Kilometres (as-the-bird-flies) on weeknights and even school nights. I think MLB should go to Durham and take the Durham Bulls name or Raleigh-Durham Bulls, with a centralized location between the two cities. Charlotte would be the best choice, but their market could be oversaturated with teams? The MLS team should've come to the Triad and Winston-Salem was working at bring MLS to the Triad, at one time. Downtown Winston-Salem was so close (a front-runner for expansion and even had a team looking to relocate, playing games here). MLS and NBA are better choices for smaller markets, but those markets need to be close to the current smallest sports markets in size.

I would suggest trying to bring a second NBA team to North Carolina. The team should play at an upgraded First Horizon Coliseum and build their headquarters, training, practice, and sports medicine facility in downtown Winston-Salem's Innovation Quarter (team logo and modern building both highly visible from Salem Parkway and future I-285), in partnership with AWFBH. Maybe this could lead to research partnerships with the NBA, too? Greensboro could pay for the coliseum upgrades and Winston-Salem could pay for the Innovation Quarter facility, dividing the cost. This would also allow for prominent advertising in both cities. It would finally give the coliseum a major league tenant and provide a building to jump-start the next phase of the Innovation Quarter. Both cities win and it would truly feel like a Triad team. I think this would encourage ticket sales, luxury seating sales, and sponsorships from both cities. First Horizon Coliseum is also a reasonable drive from Durham-Chapel Hill, increasing the fan base for the team. I think an NBA team would provide the needed major league attraction to the entire metro area. Though I'm not much of a sports fan, I know the importance of these teams in attracting talent and economic development projects.

I'm excited about the aerospace/aviation announcements. Those are cool innovative aviation tech companies that will attract talent to the area and this is in the middle of the region, so everyone can benefit. This is what the region needs to attract the jobs and talent for next level growth and economic development. Now the region just needs to merge back together as one MSA. I would also push for a City-County merger of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County (including all of the small towns), to create a larger city that is more noticed.

Very unusual, but I must disagree courteously on two points. 1) While your proposal for an NBA team is spot-on theoretically, it would not work, meaning the team playing at the Greensboro venue would be known by the name Greensboro. 2) Making the existing CSA an MSA for the so-called Triad would be, in my opinion, a huge mistake as it would assure W-S losing any national or regional identity that might remain. Because of the structure of CSAs and the promotion of the so-called triad, most of the nation views W-S as a very large suburb of Greensboro.

However, I do offer (as before) that Surry County (Matthew has also suggested) become part of the W-S MSA and further I suggest that Wilkes County become part of the W-S MSA.

Nearly 60,000 people attended and participated Saturday in the 12th annual Pride Winston-Salem’s parade and festival in downtown Winston-Salem, organizers said.

The crowd’s size exceeded the organizers’ earlier estimate of 55,000 people who would attend and participate in the events, said Jerry Morin, the president of Pride Winston-Salem.

5 More NASCAR events at Bowman Gray
https://archive.ph/diWTJ

Obviously this is a good thing. With some more stability maybe the DTWS area will come together for this more than they did this year. I remember when Billy Strings did two shows at LJVM there were Billy Strings "support events" all over the place. I'm not a particular fan of either one, but I did enjoy the buzz around town for Billy Strings.

I'd personally like to see them utilize more parking downtown. The lots next to Reynolds will put people in the heart of DTWS and I hear NASCAR and Reynolds used to have a relationship. The ones they used at MLK and 52 this year appear out of the way for people looking for dinner or lunch or a beer.

Projects & Construction:
I want to thank the photographers and local businesses, sharing updates on projects, who make this thread possible. Without you, these updates won't happen. I don't make any money from this and these updates are to share, with both locals and out-of-towners, what is happening in the city they love. Many people reading this are far-away and this allows them to see the projects. If you can, please support any local businesses or follow social pages sharing photographs and thank them.

Sorry for posting this so late! I'm helping a friend who recently lost someone. She needs someone to talk to, things repaired, and help going through that person's items. If you don't see much from me, both here and on social media, that is why. This is actually a really great update. Better late than never... lets get updated!

First Baptist Church Restoration:
Yes, there is another phase to this project and now it's finally ready to move forward. First Baptist Church is ready to pave their parking and construct a pavilion with covered drop-off area connecting to a covered walkway to the building. A columbarium will be constructed at the center of a new courtyard and playground.

Salem Bottling Works:
The pizzeria I spoke of is now confirmed, along with the Ramen restaurant. James Beard Award nominated Bobby Boy Bakeshop will open Grandpa John’s Pizzeria in early-July, which will also sell gelato. The bakery said, “We’ll be serving charred and chilled seafood, salads, and soft-serve ice cream. Also look for a fine-dining restaurant by the bakery. The development will include hotel rooms, a food truck courtyard, and studio apartments.

Salem Gymnastics Expansion: Built!
As of June 19, 2025, Salem Gymnastics' 7,400-square-foot expansion is now officially built! The expansion features a 60' x 120' gym with specialized flooring, runways, and equipment. The expansion will allow them to have more classes, camps, and practices at the same time.

Union Cross Development:
Front Street Capital said, "New phase, new footprint, same high standards. Construction is officially underway on the next chapter of Union Cross Industrial Center — a 300,000 SF spec industrial building at Union Cross Rd & Axle Dr in Winston-Salem. It’s the first of three new projects expanding UCIC to the north, continuing the momentum we’ve built across four previous projects."

Bowman Gray Stadium Renovation:
I broke the news on this project on social media. Bowman Gray Stadium is getting a new $1 million videoboard. The City will pay for half of it, with NASCAR paying 40% and WSSU paying 10%. In exchange for the city paying half, NASCAR will agree to hold NATIONAL events at Bowman Gray Stadium for five years! That will help the City recover the cost spent on the videoboard. This will bring the stadium to NASCAR standards to host bigger events.

Abasto Media (The leading food and beverage B2B multimedia company for the Hispanic food and beverage industry in the United States, Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean) will also move their headquarters to this building. Purple Crow is talking about restoring the original 64-year-old fountain, which was loved by many in Winston-Salem for its water and light displays.

Job Growth:
The Winston-Salem MSA is leading the way in the Triad, with total employment increasing by nearly 2, which is roughly one-and-a-half times faster than the statewide rate. Greensboro's MSA grew "less than half a percent, with furniture manufacturing losing over a third of its workforce over the past five years, declining by roughly 9%. This is according to WFDD.
