Traffic decks approach finish line
With the completion of the South Granville traffic deck in late summer and the Oak-VGH traffic deck just this month, crews have now finished three of five traffic decks on Broadway. The remaining two are scheduled to be complete in winter. When complete, crews work on excavating the new stations underneath while people move above ground on the traffic decks.
Broadway remains open while we work to complete the traffic decks – and for the length of the project. While the streets and sidewalks may look a bit different where the future stations are being constructed, access to residences, businesses, health services and parking lots is being maintained for all abilities. If you visit Broadway for appointments, restaurants or shopping, you can look for directional signs on site or take a look at the parking and access maps available online before you go. Please plan extra travel time, watch for wayfinding information, and obey traffic control personnel and signs at all times.
Construction forecast
Our planned construction activities for the next three months include:
- Continue constructing the elevated guideway between VCC-Clark Station and the future Great Northern Way-Emily Carr station;
- Assembling Phyllis, the second TBM, for a planned launch in winter. Continue removing excavated material from boring the first tunnel;
- Building the underground portion of the future Mount Pleasant Station and excavating the Broadway-City Hall, Oak-VGH, South Granville and Arbutus stations;
- Completing the traffic decks for the Broadway-City Hall and Arbutus stations; and,
- Finishing the relocation of major utilities at the Broadway-City Hall and Arbutus work sites.
We understand that construction is disruptive and are working hard to minimize impacts in the community – thank you to everyone for your ongoing patience as we work to build this project as quickly as possible.
Did you know?
At 2.4 meters in diameter, the new section of the Cambie combined storm and sewer system being built by the Broadway Subway Project is big enough to stand in!
This key utility is being relocated to make room for the new escalators that will connect the Canada Line outbound platform directly to the extended Millennium Line, creating a seamless underground connection between lines for passengers. This pipe carries both sewage and storm water runoff to wastewater treatment facilities. As part of that work, the sewer is being expanded to 2.4 meters from 1.8 meters previously, which will better prepare the system for increases in population and more heavy rainfall events due to climate change.
