Windsor is amongst the oldest settlements in the country which gave it a leg up. Additionally, being the hub for lots of Canada’s early manufacturing and automotive industries was what caused it to grow so quickly so early compared to London and Kitchener. Unfortunately, the manufacturing and automotive industries are also what led to its stagnation and decline like much of the US Rust Belt.

Fortunately, I think those days are over. Aside from posting good population growth numbers, SW Ontario in general seems to be leading business/job growth in the province. I saw an article a while back that showed London, Kitchener, and Windsor all leading the pack and consistently changing places for #1 by % over the past year or so.

It’s a nice change to see Windsor finally prospering again with such strong population and economic growth. We have a lot of catching up to do, as London and KW regions had a very large head start booming a good decade before us, but better late than never.

Windsor had remained strong in automotive supply-chain sectors too. E.g., the tool & die industry -- maybe not quite as important these days given globalization and automation of production, but quite important in the past.

These cities are all nice places to live too. They have just about everything anyone could ever need, without having lots of the negative aspects of growth.

Anything Federal has become an inconsistent snails pace of releases.

Environment Canada said that the 1990 to 2020 weather averages would be released in spring 2023 (already years late compared to other developed nations). The first batch of around 100 were finally released in I believe October last year. Subsequent batches were “soon to follow.” I thought that meant perhaps in the following weeks as maybe they were tweaking some following stations… it’s now May 2024… nothing new has been released… this is beyond regular government incompetence.

Also of note, they are only doing about 1/3 of of the weather stations for the 1990 to 2020 stars that they did for the 1989 to 2010 stats. So even when complete (2026 at this rate??) expect some of your favorite stations to not be updated, including some rather large towns.

I can’t help but feel mismanaged finds into over bloated Human Resources departments and useless special interest positions is part of what is causing this joke.

I think it's part political, and part bureaucratic, but about approvals rather than bloat. Nothing in the civil service side of government happens unless it's approved by senior management, and something like this would likely need to get that from the top... deputy minister, but probably higher in this case.

Yes, although London is growing very quickly, KWC has certainly pulled ahead both have gained a lot of ground on Hamilton.

The difference is that London still "feels" a lot bigger than KWC. It is a regional centre that KWC isn't but more than that, London is one city of nearly 500,000 but KWC is an amalgamation of 5 different cities................Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge which is an amalgamation of the former cities of Preston, Hespler, and Galt. Due to this London has just one core centre while KW has several and is more disjointed than London. This is much like Niagara. It is bigger than Windsor but feels smaller and less centred.

Yep, KWC is the new Mississauga/Brampton while London is more like Calgary or Edmonton.

I was surprised by the vibrancy of Brantford yesterday, as really I've only been there in Winter. And Hamilton Mountain around Brucedale Park.

Blows my mind the NB and Alberta have the same unemployment rate. Tell that to a New Brunswicker 10 years ago and they'd laugh in your face.

What *is* going on with Alberta? I thought things were hopping and everybody was moving there. Did they not have jobs lined up first?

Do refugees have jobs lined up? Also, we have an inept provincial government. Which means that we have 2 inept levels of government that we have to contend with, not including municipal governments.

Hi Everyone, first post in a few years.

What's driving the unemployment in Alberta is just the sheer volume of people moving here. The job market is booming big time, we just have more people moving here than we have jobs for. Interesting times in this province.

Just seems a bit backwards to me. I always thought people moved to Alberta because the oil patch was hiring like crazy for good money. The old boom/bust cycle.

The movement of people to Alberta in search of afforable housing has been well documented in recent years. Affordability - or rather, the unaffordability of BC & Ontario - is now it's primary driver of growth, rather than economic prospects.

Of course, much like Canada as a whole, when population growth vastly exceeds economic or job growth, unemployment inevitability rises.
