Behind the pay wall, the AJC is reporting that Georgia World Congress Center is planning a privately funded , 800-1,000 key hotel that would " would meet demand for accommodations closer to parts of the complex that are a hike from the nearest hotel, the Omni at CNN Center." Jennifer LeMaster, spokeswoman for the GWCC authority, said discussions about a hotel are very preliminary but the plan is to not use state tax dollars in any project that results.“Our approach is we are going to pursue a private sector development,” she said.
William Pate, president of the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau, said there would be more than enough business for the facility. Atlanta has 23 “citywides” — conventions that fill rooms from downtown to the Perimeter area — on the books for 2015 and he expects a 25 percent increase in convention business over the next five years.
Add to that a possible NCAA college football championship game in 2018, a Super Bowl in 2019 and a NCAA Men’s College basketball game in 2020 — all at the new stadium — and the convention center hotel makes sense, he said.
