Grant Funds Promise Enhancements to 20 Intown Façades

The piecemeal makeover of downtown Atlanta continues! Invest Atlanta, the city's economic development arm, has selected 20 buildings on the eastern and western fringes of downtown to help with aesthetic enhancements, and the beneficiaries include commercial, live/work developments and some well-known retailers. Invest Atlanta plans to award nearly $2 million as part of its Downtown Façade Improvement Program, and today they released a list of 20 recipients along the Atlanta Streetcar corridor, including Noni's Bar & Deli, Vesuvius Pizza, Sweet Auburn Real Estate and the forthcoming Bad Dog Taqueria. Awards will range from $20,000 to $400,000, and the result could be a serious spruce-up for corridors like Edgewood and Auburn avenues to the east and, on the flipside of downtown, Marietta, Walker and Luckie streets.

Is Novare Killing Atlanta's Skyline?

I don't think the buildings are great but they don't seem that terrible to me. Wish they'd put the parking underneath.

Any major skyscraper city is bound to have repeated designs, as long as they're not clustered together, I don't see a problem with that. We need more affordable urbanity, and reusing designs is a great way to achieve it.

I'll start to worry when they put up the tenth identical high-rise. The good thing is that they are not anywhere close to each other. They could be a tad higher.

Beltline Eastside trail area construction update

Some construction at John Wesley Dobbs and Randolph in O4W. Looks like additions to the existing structure. Anybody know more about this? It's not on the development map and I hadn't heard anything about it.

Ponce City Market. I hope they don't leave the parking ramps looking like this.

‘Downtown West’ envisioned around new Falcons stadium

F riendship Baptist Church envisions turning the community around the new Atlanta Falcons stadium into a revitalized “Downtown West.”

Friendship is partnering with a well-known national development firm to plan the revitalization of at least 22 acres around the new stadium.

The St. Louis firm of McCormack Baron Salazar is partnering with Friendship to plan the development of Downtown West — which will include affordable and market-rate housing, and retail as well as a number of community amenities – including a new Friendship Baptist Church.

I generally agree.

However, it probably is worth keeping a weather eye on the aesthetic element of new development. It's a lot easier to get things right from the beginning than to go back after they are in place.

That being said, I don't see the problem with Novare buildings in particular. They may not be the most exciting designs but they are not bad in my opinion.

...plus lots of average and not-so-great architecture mixed in for good measure. I have never seen a great city without TONS of ugly buildings. They make the great ones stand out even that much more.

In addition, one decade's "beautiful" buildings may be seen as less attractive in another decade - witness the rapid growth and decline of brutalism (e.g. Boston City Hall) and the loss of interest in glass walls.
But overtime architectural mixes seem to work. While living in Belgium years ago, we would visit the Grand Place in Brussels - noted for beauty - but realized that the buildings were actually from several different time periods, even centuries apart, architecturally not similar and often regarded as inappropriate at the time of construction. Today that area seems remarkably uniform and is a great tourist attraction and heart of the city.

The ramps on PCM will remain, but they're building additional buildings along the Beltline and North Avenue that should hide them from view (for the most part).

Novare buildings are certainly architectural sedatives, but their greater sin, by far, is their treatment of the street, something I think most on here would agree is more important than the architecture when it comes to fostering urbanity.

Flat, featureless, formulaic and cheap-looking Novare retail spaces may be better than blank walls, but not by much, as demonstrated by the fact that Novare, even in a town that traditionally struggles with street retail, struggles even more. That Novare buildings on Atlanta's premier street have taken years to acquire retail tenants, and required expensive renovations in the meantime, should clue all in that while Novare may be adding density to the city, they don't seem capable of much else. And this is to say nothing of their other assorted atrocities behind Viewpoint or at 12th/Spring, the upcoming flub at 14th/W.Peachtree (ha! Novare laughs at your overlay requirements!), or wherever else they manage to muck up for at least a generation.

Until Novare decides to invest a bit more in their street-facing design (or hell, take a damn class on urban planning!), they wont get more than a tepid nod of thanks from me. Perhaps the increased population from their buildings will lead to more (competent) developers taking a chance on the city, at least if Novare doesn't get all the plots first.
