I kinda have to agree about the Hotel. I'd suspect some brick under that crap cladding. Then again, I would not miss it either if we got something slim and interesting to bookend.

EDMONTON - More retail space is under construction in Edmonton than anywhere else in the nation, says a new report by commercial real estate firm CBRE.

“This energy-based economy is really driving a lot of things in this city from residential construction to industrial demand and when there’s low unemployment, people are buying so retailers are strong,” said Dave Young, senior vice-president and managing director of CBRE’s Edmonton office.

“Will the other shoe fall? I don’t know, but right now and going into 2012, we’re pretty bullish on all markets and retail definitely will be strong for the coming year.”

Wow stationlands tower 2render already? This week has been very exciting; ultima renders, arena talks, stationlands, more manu 2 stuff.... Crazy. If ultima and manu gets built out soon it will change edmontons view drastically. In the way that 101 will no longer seem like the only cluster of towers other than jasper. There will be a more dense feel throughout and a trip down 104ave will have the nicest of views.

Manu 2, Ultima, Stationlands 2, KR hotel and condos on RHW, Langham x 2, RAM, Arena.... let alone entertainment district and other rumours.

Edmonton could become quite a different city in 5years.

The important thing is to actually get these projects in the ground. All too often we talk the talk but don't walk the walk.

Adding to Coldrsx's "list"... eventually maybe even Bell 2, Melcor, Procura; who knows what the future will bring. Would love to see Aurora, Cascadia and Azura go too.

...other things that could be done or started by 2016-2017...

Mayfair, NLRT, MWLRT, Pearl, 116 Jasper, 122 Jasper, GMAC Centralization, Hilton on 96th, new Walterdale bridge, Whyte 105th, Boyle Renaissance, Century Park, Skyline, NE AHD, YEG expansions/new flights/more passengers, more festivals, continued revitalization of East Whyte; 118th; 124th; Warehouse District; and the Quarters.

Depends on who is developing.

Oxford had a ~24 storey proposal for EPCOR
Katz Group were working on a ~40 storey for ATB but their option is over I believe

Simply amazing really. Even if half of that gets a green light...its a total game changer for our city.

I think with Whole Foods on Jasper and 123 that will drive new condo towers in a 6 block radius. With MEC anchoring 102 and 124 - the area will shape up nicely (already is of course but about the get busy busy).

Otherwise, back to your 'quote' CMD, Mies nailed it. My favourite office complexes in major cities are Mies-built. Chicago, NY, Toronto... all beautiful. Capitalizing on this concept is why I think X Condo in Toronto is so sexy, and universally appreciated:

104st is fast becoming a core of redevelopement and thankfully it is slowly but surely expanding out from that area. Hopefully another street that will start to see more activity is 108 st (Capital Boulevard). Also one other street that could be destinctive if it can further move forward is 96st the future Armature.

Highly hopeful for great things happening with capital blvd. Im thinking something like robson street. Considering the weather here, maybe some sort of retractable glass roof over a two block stretch. With heating underneath so shoppers can enjoy the area in the coldest of storms; maybe just over the sidewalk?

As for places needing development, the block that boston pizza on jasper is on and around there. Jasper to 102 and between 106 and 107 street, IMO is the largest 'hole' the dt has and looks like crap and out of place. Looks like a PRIME location for couple towers to me.

Retractable anything won't work and will just kill off whatever street life there is. Quebec City in the 1970s put in retractable walls on a stretch of the sidewalks on Rue St-Joseph in the hopes of drawing people downtown and revitalizing everything, but in the end, the measure killed off the street and made it rather scary (ok, the area was already scary, but this made it worse). It's only in the past decade they've torn down the structure and life has started returning to the street.

Heated sidewalks, on the other hand...

Any outdoor roof structure is gimmicky and does nothing for creating a welcoming urban environment. Good urban design, materials, active frontage, etc., this works way better and at a much reduced cost.
