Re Ultima: for my money, this is first time that a downtown condo proposal has, on its first try, met contemporary standards for quality design. It appears that design attention was paid to all sides of the building, and gone are the bells and whistles many Edmonton developers previously demanded, and the failed transitions between tower and podium (Icon, Quest). In its place, we have a simple, clean and coherent looking design. Good work, imo.

What was this John Day 108 Street project supposed to be? First time hearing of it. I would assume he'd be focusing on 122/Jasper.

EDIT: My guess Cold was talking about the Arena or KR Block.

Condo/mixed use. Haven't seen renderings, but it would replace the 1930s apartments that are there, as well as some of the retail right on Jasper/108th (NE corner).

I love the Patricia Annex and El Mirador. Fond memories of wine and beer nights to the wee hours.

Icon 1 at 30 storeys is 92m, II is 112m.

So I would guess right around 100m

Ok. Height at 100M would look like this:

That will really begin to balance the south and north edges of the downtown.

About the Ultima's height and impact - that's not bad at all. I like it.

Now, how about getting rid of the Grand Hotel?

^ Not get rid of, rather rejuvinate. That building has some nice character and definitely should be salvaged, what with how little prewar arch there is in Edmonton. As others have mentioned, trendy boutique hotel would be nice, or maybe some alternative retail/restaurant with lofts or offices above.

For those that don't check other threads, check the Arena thread for some interiors on the proposed(?) Arena.

maybe I'm in the minority, but there is nothing appealing to me about that hotel in a "historical" view.....

Its funny that the ultima is so nice because it is so simple. No fancy curves or weird design elements. Just a clean simple building at what seems to be good prices. There is nothing special about this building that makes it a stunning building, but edmonton is definately in need of some simple nice buildings that dont try to hard. When you try to hard you end up failing like the icons...

Do you find nothing appealing about the Strathcona Hotel or the 1881 Schoolhouse? It may just be the style of building then which you don't agree with, which is fine, everyone has their own tastes. The wooden turn of the century prairie town look isn't my favourite either, but I still like it as it is a good representation of that time in our province's history.

lol. I thought the well of sucker government departments willing to lease out space in the city for record rates had run dry.

The ambition of Qualico is awesome. They have a solid product that is deliverable and ready to go. I'm just not 100% sold on the location. It's brutal.

Really, if the remainder of Stationlands builds out as per the plan, I really really really hope downtown starts to creep northwards. Otherwise, those towers sure are lonely and very removed from the action. I don't think I'd want to work there, I'd rather be in the CBD where I don't have to walk 3 blocks to get anywhere.

Sure, but add in the RAM, arena and potentially some pacific rim mall redevelopment and things look A LOT better.
