There has been lots of speculation, but I'd love for someone in the know to share their analysis.

- Have there been a significant number of flight increases?
- Is it Calgary overflow as someone suggested (and others strongly refuted)?
- Have they adopted the new counting method earlier than expected (someone had mentioned they were moving to a more standard method starting April 1st)?
yes...new flights, but more so increased freq and loads. LHR is also a huge boost.

prob some, but more people flying edmonton first

not yet.

I've never flown out of YEG, but have picked up/dropped off passengers many times. Lets just say the location is better then the location in Calgary. I'm glad I don't have huge planes flying overhead all the time like they do in Eastern Calgary. I suppose, back in the 60's and early 70s when YEG first came about, it sure did seem far out, but the distance between Developed Edmonton and the airport shrinks every year

Interesting comments about pros and cons of having an airport closer. Edmonton I guess hits all the pros (or the cons) with building an airport right next to downtown and having another well out.

With respect to it getting closer with the years (an advocacy for urban sprawl), that doesn't fly, as for one the downtown doesn't move. Second, development in Edmonton is in all directions (just like in most cities) so the average person is still quite a ways away. Consider St. Albert, Sherwood park, and the new 'city' North and East of Sherwood Park (expected to grown to 200,000 people). Don't forget that Edmonton loses out on a TON of conferences because of the airport (take the World Petroleum Conference as an example).

It sure is nice to have public transit right to the airport though ... and the train at LHR is awesome! I know you guys in oil country aren't as environmentally conscious, but public transit access would be a huge positive even from a convenience perspective.

-majority of the cities growth is south....and will be moreso
-AHD makes any suburb 15-30min to the airport once complete
-downtown to YEG is going to be improved, HOV, dedicated taxi lanes etc....bus, lrt, new downtown bridge, 23ave overpass.

Your two statements are contradictory. On the one hand, you say how much better it is because development is far away. Then on the other hand, you say how development is getting closer, so it will soon be better.

BTW - not all my posts are about Calgary. No problems you bringing it up, but I don't want people jumping at me afterwards suggesting it was me.

You're adding potentially 200,000 North-East of Sherwood Park. I highly doubt Edmonton planning for the South will be so huge in the medium term, that it would be more than that.

It is positive, however, that downtown to YEG will be improved. Perhaps greater emphasis on a secondary economic core to the South, including convention facilities, could also help.

Walli - again, please either be in the know or dont post about what you dont know.....

"You're adding potentially 200,000 North-East of Sherwood Park. I highly doubt Edmonton planning for the South will be so huge in the medium term, that it would be more than that."

that huge development is like a 50 yr plan...

as for south edmonton, it is going like wildfire and i know a few planners who have ASP and NSPs out all the way to 41ave....it is the most popular location to live in Edmonton and will continue to be.

Put it this way, the majority of south Edmonton is being planned to its very edge (41 Ave). The first neighbourhood to actually touch 41 Ave is going to Council May 14th.

Indeed - the majority of growth is South - and those homes and condos are high end (ie: people with money to travel). I agree with Cold - that the AHD and improvements to/from the core via Gateway Blvd will help. I hear the City is removing the old South travelling signs that read: Calgary Trail to something more appropriate for the Capital Region.

There is indeed a lot of construction on the South. I hear they have replace the 'City of Champions' sign with 'Under Construction'

oh and wailli - when you need a break from this forum - check out these links:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Calgary+is+ass+crack
http://www.calgarysucks.com/
http://www.discovervancouver.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=104812

Personally I like the "Calgary is like an ass crack" line. I might want to use that on the international forums I am a member of - to put the word out - like you do bad mouthing Edmonton. Oh and by the way - say goodbye to the boys from Shell on their way out of your town. They will not be the last.

What do these and most other responses by you have to do with YEG?

I don't know why the moderators don't kick this guy off the site. Until that time, just don't respond to the guys posts. He obviously gets off on it in some shape or form and i don't really want to know in which way either. I don't know maybe he really is jealous of YEG, or Edmonton or some Edmonton chick turned him down. Regardless, this forum is about YEG not about the environment, the Oilers, urban sprawl, or oilsands development northeast of Edmonton. Perhaps some of these topics are related to YEG in a small way but they should be talked about on other threads. Basically this is my first and last response to anything this guy has to say.
