Crews from B.C. started moving heavy equiment and work sheds onto the lot across the street from the new Best Western Hotel in Blairmore this week. No idea of what's going in there but about 3/4 of the entire block is staked off for construction.

I assume you mean north of the hotel, cause to the west is where the new Walmart is, right?
I believe that area is slated for residential, and that intersection at Hart Rd is intended to become an interchange eventually too.

London Drugs is backfilling the Wal-Mart space in Confed along with Canadian Tire.

Seymour Pacific out of Campbell River are building three apartment buildings directly south of the new hotel. They are advertising for construction workers to start now.

I believe several councilors have already expressed their support for a new bridge that 'replicates' the look of the current one. I have not heard one councilor support a new signature bridge because of the price associated with it.

I don't really have a strong opinion, except for it not to be the bland/plain concrete structure. I had supported (and still do) a ped/bike/public transit only bridge.

I drove out to University Heights, and the new UH Square development there is going like gangbusters. The Shoppers Drug Mart is taking shape, as well at the new CIBC.

I also drove through the "village square" in nearby Willowgrove, where there is supposed to be mixed-used commercial/residential. Nothing but empty lots and crickets.

We took a drive to see the University Heights as well, Haven't been by there for awhile and couldn't believe the progress. Went over to the east bank look out for the new bridge and it's moving along quickly in the river. It will be nice when they get the web cam operating at this point.

Hey there. I was just wondering if any of you know of a good area to live in in Saskatoon as next year I will be up there working on getting my BA in Regional and Urban Planning at the college of Arts and Science. Any further information would be great about the city!

Nutana, downtown and varsity view are all great neighbourhoods near the uni, and you should love the program, im on the planning students society and in my 4th year!

There isn't a standard length of time for reviewing large scale proposals. It really depends on the weight of the proposal; who and how it impacts the community determines how extensive the review process is.

Heavy public consultation can be a steep hill to climb.

Considering a change to the format to improve readability, but have yet to decide what it is going to look like. I'll likely remove everything except the map and listing, and photo tour links. Nice to have you come up here to study. Your choices for where to live might be limited by what's available - I'm assuming you'll be renting an apartment or basement suite. The U of S Students' Union runs a housing registry that can help you with that.

Varsity View is the neighbourhood right beside the university campus, so that'd be a desirable choice. Nutana and Grosvenor Park are the next nearest. City Park was mentioned by someone else and it's good too, although it's on the other side of the river from the campus. Nutana and City Park are comparable to the Cathedral area of Regina in terms of character and housing stock. Sutherland is another nearby neighbourhood, separated from the campus by fields and the Circle Drive freeway.

There are also enclaves of student housing in Forest Grove, College Park and Lakeview, although they're considered beyond walking distance. You'd have to bike, drive or take transit.

Hey thanks everyone for your help

I was thinking of somewhere downtown, however I'm looking for something recently renovated,, to rent of course. preferably two bedroom, with covered parking. And I will be starting in January of 2012, I guess I'm just getting ahead of myself (excitement) However,any developments that will be ready to move into with my criteria that will be finished by the time I am there would be great!

When I was studying at U of S (some time ago!

), I was fortunate to get a place in Varsity View, right on College Ave., near Wiggins Ave., which made for a nice, short walk (esp. in winter!) to classes each day! I agree, all of the above areas mentioned are great, though the areas nearby the university are more established and feature places which are a little more basic or rugged, unless recently renovated -- but with a little bit of your own elbow grease and/or your mom's TLC (you'll need those wherever you decide to move into), it becomes your own place!

One of my friends also lived downtown, and many more chose Wildwood area (close to the big mall)! 8th St. tends to be the restaurant and movie entertainment strip, and of course, there's Jerry's Food Emporium, and Fuddruckers along there!

Good luck, and enjoy your stay! Just try to remember us back in Regina once in a while, because you might not want to leave!

Obviously having it totally aligned is best but I don't that's an option anymore. I really love the green space around the trains. I wish that the median starting at 25th street was more pronounce to mark it as an entry to downtown. A large public sculpture like the one at the base of the university bridge should be put there. Thoughts?

^ Yes, I'm also hoping for something of considerable visual prominence and appeal at 25th and Idylwyld to mark the entrance into downtown.

I think we'll get it too. My understanding is that the City's Urban Design section has been allotted a considerable amount to create a prominent gateway entry feature at this location. And it's not just for the sake of aesthetics, as the City is going to be putting up parcels for sale following this extension, and they'll want the area to be marketable to developers and potential residents.
