I thought Baker was over 14 000', must have confused it with Raineer or something. My mistake...

You guys can make fun of mountains, but they look spectacular. Combine that with a city skyline and... well, you know the result.

Just FYI, I'm not being completely serious here. There's no winning this debate.

I'm not making fun of mountains, they are my favourite thing about being in Calgary. I'm making fun off the idea that they are a factor in the skyline. But, to each their own I suppose...

Hamilton's topography gives a very straight skyline.

Toronto is by far the country's best skyline. Its simply a beast!

Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver can each make a case for being #2.

Canada has a clear cut #1, but #2 is debatable.

For me, #2 goes back and forth between Calgary and Montreal. I can never settle on one lol.

You're exactly right, whether you meant to be or not. Skylines are entirely subjective because they're ranked by beauty, which everyone interprets differently.

The ocean, the mountains, etc. are indeed a factor in evaluating skylines IMO... it's not strictly about buildings. It's about the bunch of buildings, together, in their environment.

Travis just said he thought Lake Ontario was a nice component of Toronto's skyline... well, yes, it is. Mountains are, as well. Can anyone tell me with a straight face they actually don't think Mount Fuji is a part of Tokyo's skyline...? Seriously?

So, some here would say that photoshopping the mountain/volcano out completely would have zero impact on the skyline, am I getting this right?

Vancouver skyline will appear very different from across False Creek (what you must be thinking), Spanish Banks, North Shore and Burnaby Mountain. There actually lots of variation in architecture and height. Please come over to see for yourself.

Vancouver's Yaletown is also far from as 'bland and sterile' when compared to how Toronto's waterfront is turning out to be. You guys have totally 'yaletownized' your own famous skyline in the past 10 years...

I think they make a nice backdrop for a skyline and a pretty setting, but I think of the skyline as the collection of buildings. Besides, the mountains, ocean, lakes etc, aren't visible from every angle the skyline is.

I just think we should keep it fair as not every city has such a pretty setting as Vancouver, that's all.

I know it's all subjective, but IMO Vancouver is the best skyline in Canada..At least my personal fave..It's got the mountains as a backdrop, the Pacific ocean, and amazing density..When I look at Vancouver's skyline, and I wasn't in the know, I would of guessed that it was a much larger city then 2.5.

I'm surprised that (unless I missed it) that nobody else ranked Vancouver as #1.

Toronto would be a close second followed by Montreal. Toronto for the lake and Sheer density, and Montreal for how eclectic it's skyline is.

Calgary IMO is a distant fourth well behind Montreal's skyline, but well ahead of fifth..Where Calgary impresses is how from those certain popular camera angles how massive it's skyline appears to be for a relatively small city..It just doesn't have the girth/depth, nor should it be expected to..It's otherwise a pretty generic "modern city" skyline..Solid fourth though.

To me, Edmonton and Winnipeg have that "eclectic" factor like Montreal..They just aren't sizeable enough to pull it off like Montreal can.

Not going to pull the homerism route for Ottawa, because it is what it is..Amazing street wall density, but no height which is understandably the benchmark on a site like this.

Then again, not every city has an amazing skyline like Calgary and Toronto either... so one could easily make the opposite argument. Cities that are blessed with the natural setting should be able to take advantage of that, using that logic.

The idea is to compare skylines though, not the scenery. I do get your point though. Anyway I digress...

How about we "keep it fair" as not every city has older Art Deco skyscrapers tall enough to show up in the skyline like Montreal? Or something like Winnipeg's well conserved Exchange District? Or Quebec City's Château Frontenac? (Which is definitely a part of the skyline there, you can't not have it in the angle, regardless of the angle.) Or St. John's amazing colorful bones and the hills to show them off?

It's not fair, but that's the very nature of skyline comparisons. All cities are different. Cities have things going for them that other cities don't, can't escape that.

If you strip Vancouver of the sea and of the mountains, what you have is a random bunch of buildings, it's not really Vancouver any more.

I would say the "fair" way to see this is to evaluate the true Vancouver, the one that does have the sea and mountains.
