KingSett Capital and CCI Corpfin Capital are the owners who acquired it from Great West Life Reality in 2017.

I’m aware they don’t own it – that’s what makes it seem even more likely something along those lines might be happening. No reason to slap on Sportsnet signs and tv screens otherwise if Rogers isn’t owner.

Cranes, cranes, everywhere. From my desk I can see the tower crane for 300 Main in one direction and the tower crane for WAG expansion in another direction. Beyond that, literally off in the distance out to the west, I can see a large crawler type crane. Anyone know what that's for? Sherbrook apartments?

It's at Balmoral Hall. Some kind of expansion project?

Sportsnet obviously has the long term, national broadcast rights for the NHL, including nationally televised Jets games. I wonder if the branding on the building could include them adding some production facilities/studio space and preparing to chase the regional rights when then come up in 2021. The Newport building would definitely be a prime location for that type of activity.

Sportsnet coverage is better now then it was when Strombo had the coffee table show. However, I would hope they do not get Jets regional coverage and that TSN gets the national coverage back.

Would be a cool location for a studio though.

Some news today on the next phase of WRHA health care changes. One item noted in the slideshow is construction at HSC emergency department.

Isn't that emergency room fairly new? It talks about demolition. Anyone know if this is only inside or what the actually changes are?

It seems to me that things like this are very wasteful and the reason it is so expensive. 100's of millions are spent on this stuff almost every year..

Its all part of the consolidation project aiming to make the big 3 ED's more efficient. You would be amazed at the waste in healthcare....actually mind blowing. Unfortunately, technology and advancements in medicine make keeping ED's on the cutting edge an expensive endeavor.

The current ED at HSC was designed to be one of 6 in the city, so it was scaled accordingly. Soon it will be one of just 3, so a much larger facility will be necessary. Grace has already been expanded, and soon St. B will be expanded significantly too. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with for St. B in terms of design.

Ya, I guess. It's just that this was all brand new like 5 years ago, but let's ripper out because Brian P wants to try something new. Then we'll spend 100's of millions doing something else when NDP is back in power (yes you heard it here first, not that I approve). Rinse and repeat.

I am not sure exactly when the renovation to the HSC ER was that moved it onto William but as a point of reference it has been open for some time when Brian Sinclair died in the waiting room. That happened in 2008. The design and construction likely dates back into the 15 year range now.

So not THAT old. Anyways, I get it. Things need to be changed around. Just seems like a ton of cash on something relatively new. If in the end, it improves wait times, etc, etc. That's great.

Agreed – TSN still far and away has better analysts. My #1 fear if Sportsnet won the contract would be Gene Principe getting the placement. That guy sucks.

One thing to keep in mind there though is that Bell also has the naming rights to the arena – no way TN would sign a deal with Rogers as long as that sticks around. There’s 3 seasons left on the arena naming rights contract, so it actually lines up well – but knowing Chipman’s tendencies, he’ll do everything he can to keep that relationship going. He was not thrilled about changing the arena name when Bell bought MTS, but was happy “MTS” was at least still in the name. True North likes consistency.

Hopefully something better than the recent abominations on Goulet. Plenty of parking lots in the area they could used if some services need to be moved around.

The back alley behind Mountain Equipment Co-op (303 Portage Ave.) will also be transformed and strung with lights designed by Stantec Consulting. Renderings of the project (Cielo Raso), show the lights changing colour based on time of day and the space taking on different modes, whether for patios, parties or a combination of both.

The BIZ has put out a call for proposals for people who want to throw events in the lane. Grant money is available through their Host It Downtown events fund.

“You’ve got the Alt Hotel and you’ve got a cluster of restaurants and businesses that are starting up in that area, a tremendous amount of pedestrian activity. But yet there’s a back alley that’s a little bit dark, it’s a little bit grungy, it smells a little bit. How do we bring that to life?” Grande said.

“And how do we use that space to allow people again to be attracted to that space? To check it out, to sit down, to attend an event that will be programmed there… Something that’s cool, something that’s hip, something that says, ‘Yeah, our downtown’s got an edge to it.’

“Amazing things happen when people just slow down and do things,” he said. “I think it’s something that Winnipeggers are going to react to — particularly downtowners — in a positive way.”

I like this. It has the downtown urban feel of a rooftop party deck, but using the alley will kind of make it a "Winnipeg" thing. Looking forward to seeing it!

Cielo Raso is in a perfect spot. The lane is basically a hidden surface lot behind the Dollarama and even losing that will have minimal impact to the surrounding area.
