Amazing what can happen when a city stops fixating on having enough parking lots to satisfy a "need" and starts to realize a downtown is actually a place.

I took the B-Line bus kinda later in the evening on Friday night and noticed it was a LOT busier than it used to be at that time, especially between downtown and University Plaza in both directions. Seems to be a lot more movement between the university and downtown now.

Are they laying turf on the roof and a running track?

Gotta say, I thought this we going to look decent from the renders - but it actually turned out better than that. A nice addition.

McMaster students say downtown residence building is plagued with problems

Not really too surprising

While residents were told the building was still under construction when they moved in, they say the conditions are far worse than described and the school isn't doing enough to support them.

"I felt there was so much dishonesty," Galloway said.

McMaster, meanwhile, declined an interview but told CBC it does care about its students and is doing all it can to address issues as soon as possible.
Quote:
Issues with mail services, heating and air conditioning.
No access to indoor parking that was promised.
A bug infestation in the laundry room and multiple mouse sightings in the building.
Unauthorized people getting access to the building despite security.
Some rooms had vents missing or vents that were plastered over.
Each floor has its own water cooler in the hallway due to the tap water issue, which CUPE says has led some people to develop rashes and stomach aches.

McMaster spokesperson Wade Hemsworth said water tests last week indicated the building's water system has "total coliforms" in it.
"Rent ranges from $1,375 for a private room in a two-bedroom unit to $2,065 for a 516 sq. ft., one bedroom suite"

This is completely unacceptable! How awful for those Mac students.

To be fair to Mac, 2065 for 520 sq ft 1 bdrm is definitely below market rate for the area. You'd pay closer to 2200 for the same thing at Marquee Residences next door.

Marquee doesn't have these issues which makes day to day living horrible for the new residents, particularly Grad students trying to focus on their Master's degree.
They can't even drink the tap water!

I expect higher standards for a building owned by the #5 University in Canada, and according to US News and World Report the #138 globally ranked school out of almost 2,200 ranked in the World.

If I'm not mistaken, it's not owned by McMaster. I thought it was a private developer who entered into a long-term contract with Mac.

They are actually ranked even higher in many of the non American rankings. The American rankings are skewed by taking into account endowments and not just academics.

This building just gets better and better as the cladding goes up...looks a lot like what you would expect to see in NYC and other locations...a hybrid of Mid-Century Modern and current modern designs...

Yeah even I have to admit it looks really good from the outside - lots to look at and admire - not just a box - between this and the bulged design of the glass one in the same block and the other buildings this is probably the most interesting cluster of modern/modern old building fusions in the entire city.

I wish theyd demolish that god awful motel though across from the giant parking lot not too far away from it though - that thing is god awful looking. Feels like an eyesore reminder of the decline of hamilton every time I see it.

Arrival inn my ass..

Let's not get carried away. They building looks great on a sunny day, ON a cloudy day those panels are pretty close in color to standard life and 25 main west. Also the panels continuing right into the mech house make the top look awkward and incomplete.

Uh, brutal.

Fixing contaminated water at McMaster residence means all tenants must leave

Every tenant living at a downtown McMaster residence will have to move out of the premises for six days while crews fix the coliform contamination that has tainted the building’s water supply.

The issue was acknowledged by the university back in December.

Those living in the downtown, 30-storey dormitory at 10 Bay Street South will be relocated to a nearby hotel beginning Feb. 4.
