New tunnel will cut flow of sewage into river
But storm season will arrive before system begins operating

Alexandra Zabjek
Edmonton Journal

Thursday, June 06, 2013

The underground construction of a new sanitary sewer tunnel that will decrease the amount of sewage-contaminated water that flows into the North Saskatchewan River during heavy storms is complete, but the system won't be in operation for this summer's storm season.

The West Edmonton W12 Sanitary Sewer Tunnel will reduce the amount of combined sewage outflow, which includes stormwater and raw sewage, from 200 million cubic metres per year to 600,000 cubic metres per year at the Rat Creek outflow point...

Bars have kind of become the face of Whyte; I'd like to see some more shops popping up. You guys would probably disagree with me here but I'd want to see some single/major brand stores; ie. a cool Adidas store like the one on Granville in Vancouver.

I'd love to see a breakdown of other cities release of untreated sewage.

This is further to the west. It's actually knocking down the old legion and replacing it, plus the single lot parking to the west, with a new building. 4 Stories.

whoa.... that is a fantastic breakdown. It's amazing how little attention is given to this. I guess it isn't as sexy as oil spills.

It's been 9 years since this report card came out. Out of the four cities that weren't treating their sewage in 2004 two have improved. St. John's opened a treatment facility in 2009, and Dawson City opened their facility in 2012. However Halifax and Victoria are still pumping billions of litres of raw sewage into the oceans...

Victoria's sewage is piped deep into the ocean. It's cold down there and the theory is that the big chunks stay down there and by the time it percolates up and around it is so diluted/broken down that it isn't a problem. Kind of like a natural septic system.

I'm not sewage expert so I have no idea if it is a good or bad system.

It's still not good for the ecosystem at those depths. Instead of poisoning the higher levels of the ocean, you're messing with things farther down.

Human feces also tends to hold a high amount of trace metals (lead, tin, aluminum, mercury, chromium, etc.), which never break down, and actually bioaccumulate in the food chain. Not to mention all the other chemicals that people flush down their sinks and toilets.

There is also the smorgasbord of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals that get flushed do the drains.
It is interesting to listen to the argument against the construction of a waste facility.
Bellevue Washington is now starting to complain about Victoria outflow. There is a sewer replacement project for Victoria but people do not want it done because it will mean removing some trees when the work is done.
I would like to see test results from fish and other edible marine life in the vicinity

Ironically most of the areas around Victoria treat their wastewater, including the airport...
