Great angle, Chad ! Calgary looks terrific from this vantage; was it unavailable prior to the recent park being opened? It really gives the impression of a riverfront city.

All of Vancouver's beaches are natural. I used to live across the street from Kits Beach and never even saw sand being added.

^Sand does get added regularly though. Natural beaches on their own are seldom self-sustaining.

Vancouver (and UBC) has a natural abundance of beaches.

-English Bay Beach
-Jericho Beach
-Kitsilano Beach
-Locarno Beach
-Second Beach
-Spanish Banks Beach
-Sunset Beach
-Third Beach
-Trout Lake Beach
-Crab Park Beach
-Tower Beach
-Wreck Beach

Plus numerous little natural and sandy pocket beaches around Stanley Park that are accessible during low tide. And there are many more beaches outside of Vancouver proper. Certainly some of them are maintained, enhanced and manipulated to make them better. And some are completely natural without trucked in sand.

In the city of West Vancouver there is a wall mural (see pics below) near Dundarave beach that depicts the downtown Vancouver peninsula around the time that white men first arrived. The skyline at that time would have been a deep rain forest with a tree canopy as high as 10 or 15 storey buildings. The original and natural beaches back then were places where the first nations people had their settlements.

Great shot! Which building is that on the left edge of the picture? Position makes me think it's First but it doesn't look like that.

Vancouver really does have some wonderful beaches and they are well utilized by the citizenry.

One thing that strikes you when you go to a Vancouver beach which is very odd..........you never see anyone in the water. The water, even in high summer, is frigid and far too cold for swimming. This is strangely true of nearly all BC lakes/beaches except in the Okanagan.

That's really strange because I went to Jericho Beach on Sunday and the water was packed.

Of course since you actually live in vancouver. Many of the beaches are wall to wall a lot of the time unlike what unnamed indivuals attest to

Actually I live in the suburbs too, but I like going to Vancouver beaches for all the fun stuff like windsurfing. Went for a nice long swim after I was done, and the water was fine. My local beach is Centennial Beach which always has lots of people swimming in it too. Not sure why White Rock is so much colder considering it shares the same bay as my beach does...

I was just at Shuswap Lake, and it was PACKED with swimmers all up and down the arms. Warmer than Okanagan Lake too.

Those were probably mostly Calgarians (that has always been my impression re Shuswap anyway).
