This concerns me more than trump. Especially with an aging population in Canada. It shows incompetence.
The strip mall schools were highly encouraged by the Doug Ford government in Ontario. And I'd say that the increased immigration was also encouraged by the same government. Not all the blame goes to the Trudeau government. Here in Ontario immigrants definitely have helped keep our health care system going even though the current Ford government has not managed things well.

The Manitoba government had been much worse according to friends and family in Winnipeg under the PCs.

I too have had issues with the way immigration has been handled and especially with foreign students who get taken advantage of but it's something that is being fixed and will improve.

Something we haven't discussed much on here is how no party has released a platform.
That is something that could change support from what we're seeing in current polls. Maybe even more than the debates?

Pretty certain the Easter / family weekend will be a great opportunity for the younger angry generation to rage at their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles about why they need to vote Conservative.

The smart thing to do is vote ahead of time and then the "I already voted" line can put a nice quick end to the blackmail.

Why are you picking on parents and grandparents?

A recent CBC article concentrated on the number of young people (especially young males) who are attracted to Maple MAGA extremism. I would be more worried about them!

Lots of older people are more traditional mainstream conservatives. People you can actually reason with.

We already know you are a Liberal shill. Try to keep your inherent biases under check please.

New Mainstreet Poll has a tie in the popular vote!

LPC= 44
CPC= 43

Only 0.5 points between the two parties. A 45-45 tie in ON.

Aren't they picking on grandkids (18-35 year old males) that are still overwhelming voting for PP's CPC's?

I didn't take that comment as picking on the parents/grandparents.

A lot of young people are mad about the issues like the cost of living and housing, but they are truly duped to believe the Conservatives have a better plan to fix those issues...

I know I've said OK Boomer to you in the past, and we've not always agreed on how New Brunswick should solve the housing crisis, and other matters of government spending to say the least. Still, I think both want to see better things happen in our province and in our country. Boomers aren't the issue in this election... and many, like yourself, have put country before party preference this election, along with left of centre voters of all age groups, to vote for the Liberals, and shut out PP's CPC's.

I just hope the Liberal Party realizes the groups that help make this historic rebound in polling possible... and governs accordingly.

Canadians aren't dumb... we know Pierre Poilievre isn't going to prioritizing help people if shit truly hits the fan and we face a 2008 level or worse global economic crisis... when covid hit, Poilievre's idea was a tax cut, not stimulus. When Trump's tariffs hit us, PP's ideas are still mainly based around tax cuts, and deregulation schemes. Carney, on the other hand, is for modest tax cuts, but also for smarter, bigger investments to move Canada forward and in new directions.

Personally, I think the difference between PP and MC is that Pierre would likely accept a a mediocre deal from Donald and then give up on broadening and diversifying our trade relations... Carney, on the other hand, will aim for a best deal deal, sign it, and still be relentless about diversifying and expanding Canada's global trading connections.

If Carney is truly the great Keynesian that he's been made out to be... then I think he's truly the best man for the job, and I'll actually be hopeful for the long term of this prospects of this country for the first time in a long time. I'm hoping Carney can keep this grand coalition of voters going beyond this election, because I think he'll need more than 4 years to fix things and get the country back on track.

I know it's a pretty American way to look at it, already thinking about 2028... but it's also about long term vision. We need a steady hand, and I don't trust the CPC to nominate someone sensible next time around either, that wouldn't just tear down what Carney is trying build out of spite.

So yeah... if there are still some 18-35 year old voters out there that are giving their conservative grandparents shit for possibly voting Conservative over Easter. I say good on em'. A lot of young voters are a lost cause this election, especially young men... I hope their grandparents give their grandkids shit for supporting such a cynical, combative piece of work to be the next PM of Canada. Awkward political discussions at Easter or Thanksgiving dinner with family can be memorable and fun for everyone, and i highly recommend trying it out.

Oh BOY you don't get it. The young people in Canada have had a very rough go of it the last five years. Covid completely upended what most posters on this board would consider a normal upbringing and we have at least a benchmark of what Normal should look like.
Most twenty somethings and younger do not. Pandemic, at home schooling, no friends for 18 -24 months, zero job prospects for that Macdonald's experience, loss of older relatives, A far away War of people that look like us and a former very fake National leader.Don't even talk about moving out of Mom's house.

The Conservatives have at least been listening, The leader of the NDP looks like the folks at all the small business's their parents used to talk about as their first job experience and Young people don't participate in Polls. I really wonder if this elections turnout is going higher, much higher than the 63-68% of the last few elections and how many folks are being missed by the Frank Graves out there.

That's only one poll.

The CBC Poll tracker continues to show some slow tightening of the race too however. It ain't over yet.

Current CBC Poll Tracker:

LPC - 44.1%, 196 seats (at one point was as high as 204 seats).
CPC - 38.9%, 123 seats (was as low as 118 seats)
BLQ - 5.2%, 18 seats
NDP - 8.1%, 5 seats
GRN - 2.2%, 1 seat
PPC - 1.6%, 0 seats

338 Canada Projections:

LPC - 193 seats
CPC - 122 seats
BLQ - 18 seats
NDP - 8 seats
GRN - 2 seats
PPC - 0 seats

No question COVID was rough. However that was 3 years ago. I am certain by now they made friends with people that they get to see outside of a zoom call.

McDonalds head count has dramatically declined. Driving people to order from Kiosks instead of humans has allowed them to significantly reduce the number of positions. Grocery stores have also had significant reductions, moving to digital shelf tags saves around 1/2 FTE per store. With the adoption of reusable bags most stores went to the customer bagging their groceries, also reducing head count.

COVID did get rid of a lot of food service operators. It also created the entire uber eats delivery model. Perhaps a tossup.

Yes, seeing family member pass away due to COVID is rough. The reason all of these restrictions occurred was to minimize those loses.

Not certain what the Conservatives are going to do about any of this.

You missed my point. The Conservatives at least listened and its that person to person experience of a young persons first job that can solidify so may life habits, relationships and work ethics. I have a niece that still wonders what her Prom was going to be like. She is a super student ( being cooped up with very educated parents does that) but She also knows that a chunk of Normal is missing. Your comment of "but that was three years ago" just makes my point that we have a point of reference. Those three years are a High School experience for our young people. That different experience will temper most of them or at least I hope it does.

Forget covid, the 'Canada is broken' narrative, though necessarily dropped by the Tories, certainly resonates with young people who have entirely abandoned hope of leaving mum and dad's place in most of the big cities. Or if they do, it's with housemates. And forget ever buying a home.

Poilievre's boorish biological clock comment was devoid of style, but not substance. If his manner has scared away young women, young men at least can certainly find Tory talking points relatable. Across the Western world, an entire generation are contemplating childlessness due to circumstance and here, glib politicians like Trudeau and Sean Fraser have driven ignored young people to the Conservatives.

If the Tories could contain the rural-Western fringe, they could do very well in Central Canada. O'Toole is the Tory we want now, not the anti-everything Poilievre flirting with conspiracists and gun nuts.

Still, I believe there is significant untapped currency in the treatment v. harm reduction argument they should be hitting more in the cities. Instead of focusing on 'rally size matters' in Leduc, Poilievre could have done a tough-on-drug-crime press conference inside the entrance to a central Edmonton light rail station. Urban dwellers are sick of encountering crackheads on the train - this is where the Conservatives can make inroads.

The Liberals responded with action. They have continually adjusted programs to address problems over the last 10 years.

On the housing front:
- (1) feds returned to creating co-ops (something the conservatives withdrew government from in the 80s)
- (2) additional funding for social housing
- (3) programs to provide load guarantees for rental housing
- (4) laws against foreign ownership
- (5) multiple adjustments to tax around saving for a down-payment.

The Conservatives make a lot of noise about how things are broken and Canada is a failed state. Clearly they don't travel a lot outside the country, if that is what they think. The solutions they propose are either outside the federal government authority or wishful thinking.

As for getting that first job. There is a movement in Canada to having a living wage. That has forced the minimum wage up and in some provinces for it to be indexed to inflation. (Minimum wage in BC is going up to $17.85 in June). Retailers (and others) who typically provide those first time jobs have an incentive to automate or do away with as many of those positions as possible. That is going to get harder not easier.

While the feds do set the minimum wage for those working in federally regulated industries (eg., airlines, banks, phone companies etc.) the vast majority of people work in provincially regulated industries.

The Liberals in Ottawa are the gatekeepers on immigration not provincial premiers. They wear this fiasco.

As to “fixing it”. Don’t make me laugh. If they get another majority the first thing they’ll do is reopen the floodgates to try and goose the economic numbers to make it appear the economy is growing.

Yes and no.

The feds have no role is certifying or regulating post-secondary education in Canada. While they fund research projects and research chairs at universities they don't provide oversight of the academic programs.

All of these schools academic programs fall under provincial government oversight. The provincial government decided the strip mall schools were legitimate institutions.

So, how did the federal government fix the problem last year? They went to each province, gave them a cap and said we will not consider any applications that do not have a letter of attestation on provincial letterhead attached to the application.

I would agree the Feds should have caught on earlier and taken action earlier, however this is just as much a provincial problem as it is a federal problem.

BC as an example is upset, they want their quota increased.

Liberal operatives have been caught distributing MAGA paraphernalia at a Conservative event in a 'false flag' attempt to frame the Tories as Trumpists. And apparently the idea came from the party war room, not just some random sign-kickers. Just awful.

My social media feeds are "conservative" commentators and influencers telling parents and grandparents that they have to think about their children and grandchildren this election and vote for "change"...

Thx for the namecalling though... oh and biases - unless they go in your favour, are there none other on this feed you would like to call out - like your own.

Are the Liberals also responsible for the Matt Gaetz endorsement of Pierre?

“Don’t interrupt your enemy while he’s making a mistake.” All the Liberals need to do is stay out of it. How hard is it to do that?

This story is sus. It comes from two sources who overheard a conversation “within earshot” in a bar on Friday. One is a conservative “source.” The article states, “In fact, the idea came from the Liberal war room.” In fact? Where is the proof? An overheard conversation in a bar? A source who has every reason to lie for the benefit of his failing party?

Anything could be true but this reeks of political fabrication by those who most need to change the topic of conversation.
