There are some nice bits of information on the University Website about the Health Science Expansion... http://www.facilities.usask.ca/about/major_projects/current_projects.php?id=7 There's even a live webcam so you can keep up to date on the "D-wing" expansion.

I was looking at the pdf file for the east-side interchanges for the south bridge, and noticed that it looks like there won't be access to Circle Drive eastbound from Lorne Ave. anymore... this means that I would have to drive all the way to Clarence to be able to access the freeway from where I live (Nutana)... I'm not 100% sure though... anyone else notice this/know something I don't?

I highly doubt a 300million dollar bridge would be built and there would be no east direction access, I think the red line with the solid yellow line running through it not quite merging with the east bound lane will be a merge lane onto circle drive.

I really hope the red bear student centre gets built, it is a fantastic piece of architecture as well it would greatly contribute to the campus and aboriginal population.

If you look at the rendering for the Meridian residences, they are actually to the east of the old building (sorry forgot the name) and south of the parking facility.

I think they've begun. I was there last week anyways and that end of the arena was an obvious construction zone. No new sections of seating appearing yet, though.

Perhaps the expectation is that motorists will use the existing eastbound access to Circle Drive just south of Ruth Street, if that entrance ramp is to be preserved.

The Bella Sante cosmetic procedures chain is one the newest professional offices in City Park, on the corner of Queen and 5th, across from City Hospital.

No blocks have undergone a bigger change than those on 4th, between 25th and Queen. What used to be two blocks full of apartments coveted by students for close University access is now almost exclusively condo conversions. These two houses on the corner of Queen and 4th. have been offered for sale together for a while, to try and entice a developer to knock them down and build another condo building.

The Ridley Manor was one of the biggest condo conversions. Some of the units have been for sale for over a year.

The newest condo conversion on this street is only represented by a mysterious symbol. Its conversion only leaves a couple of rental buildings on the street.

This lot on Queen and 3rd used to contain one of the most dilapidated houses in the area. It was finally knocked down a few months ago and is awaiting a professional office to add to the many on the street.

A bunch of rundown rentals on Warman between Duchess and Duke were bought and knocked down by the city. Most of this space will be used for the Warman Road widening. I'm not sure what space to the right of the fence is meant for.

City Park has not seen the explosion in new duplexes and semi-detached units like some older east side neighbourhoods (smaller lots? higher prices? less desirable?). This fourplex on 5th. and Duchess is an exception. At $330,000 I don't think they are going to move quickly.

Long-time Duchess St. fixture Universal Bindery was burned down in an arson this winter.

This old church was moved lock, stock and barrel from its North Park location to the corner of 7th. and Duchess, where it was restored nicely and made into professional offices.

Looking at the east side of the Robin Hood flour mill.

The Dawn warehouse on 33rd was just moved into by local startup Vendasta.

The contentious (on this board, at least) downtown CP rail yards south of the mill. Indoor golf dome at the back.

1st Avenue is full of small and medium size furniture and appliance stores. They will have to find niches to compete with all the newly built suburban stores with superior selection.

Looking down King St. at the City Yards and Kelsey Residences.

Pacific Billiards was a longtime stalwart in the Rumely Building during the dark ages when there was very little to to downtown. With the condo-ization of the Rumely, they have moved to First Avenue.

The end of 25th st. It will either be extended soon, opening up Saskatoon's next infill neighbourhood, or become a thirty year long trail of tears like the South Downtown.

A lot of the commercial buildings on the west side of Warman were showing their age. The last two years has seen quite a few of them rehabbed or knocked down and rebuilt. The Soccer Locker/Xtratime Sports building is one good example as is the new Noodle King and Ice Cream Queen eatery next to TopLogix.

Re-painted with a red that works well in the middle of our desolate winter is the Great Western brewery.

Thanks, lbird. We don't see enough of City Park on here.

I absolutely love the Robin Hood mill. There's something about that gritty industrial character and sheer enormity of it that I just love. It makes a great backdrop for the emerging warehouse district and any future "Railtown" that might develop on the City Yards.

$28 million set aside for Place Riel renovations

SASKATOON — The long-discussed renovations of Place Riel at the University of Saskatchewan will begin as early as next week, student leaders announced at a press conference Monday morning.

Regarded as the “front door” to the university, the hub now contains food services, University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union (USSU) offices and student space. A second floor will be added for students’ union offices and campus club space, and what is now ‘Upper Place’ will be expanded to include council chambers for the USSU. ‘Lower Place’ will be expanded to add retail space. The renovations will cost more than $28 million, with roughly $22 million of the funding coming from the Students’ Union.

University administration will pay $6 million to add two extra floors to the project. The extra floors will not be occupied until the university has the money to finish those renovations.

The student union has discussed upgrading the building since Place Riel was first built 30 years ago. Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2010.

It's interesting how the U of S can get things done faster than the city. There should be no reason why it should be taking this long for construction to begin on River Landing.
