People loath unions for a reason and we can see why. They once served a purpose of protecting employees from unjust abuse and firings but now only protect the person that half-asses their job and completely fuck over anyone who is younger than 40.
Hear hear such genius is shocking.

Wasnt even close. 61% vote to keep the older system. This is a wake up call for the GreenDP. Their days are numbered.

Was setup to fail, but still, fearmongering wins again.

Really? Was this not set up by the NDP / Greens and did they not want this to pass?

I am happy it failed.

There are countless fringe parties on both extremes that I do not want to see in our government.

The NDP agreed to do it as part of the Green "pact". Whether they really wanted it to pass is another thing. The options were poorly fleshed out and some items were still unclear. It was rushed.

Just curious for those who prefer FPTP, why?

People will prefer a system that will ensure the status quo remains. Truth be told, many people have prospered in BC over the past 16 years - seeing more employment opportunities and increase home equity gains. NDP + Greens are overly concerned about protecting unionized jobs, the environment and the "redistribution" of wealth. I know recent measures by the government have freaked out many new immigrants because they appear to be socialist in nature.

I called this result a few months ago. Was further confident it would fail once we saw the turnout for the regions. My next prediction is that the GreenDP get absolutely crushed in the next provincial election.

The Liberals have their solid base of seniors and fiscally conservative homeowners. These people get out and vote.

The NDP had it in their election platform long before the GreeNDP pact was even thought about.

I already posted my reason, lunatic fringe parties that may get a few % of the vote but do not deserve any representation. I include the BC Conservative Party in that category.

Sometimes it is best to keep things simple.

I'd be very surprised to see the GreeNDP crushed next election. I'm not saying the Liberals won't win, but I really can't see it being by a lot. I don't see any of this socialist action you're talking about. I think they've been pretty damn mainstream and reasonable in all their policies.

Most importantly the NDP "won" the Lower Mainland virtually on one promise (aside from tolls lol) - bringing the price of housing down. And they've done a pretty good job of it. All those foreign buyer taxes and regulations seem to slowly be working. I think that was important in helping their legitimacy and competence as a government.

Some correction here. The foreign buyer tax was put in by the Liberals and prices went down for around 3 months then shot right back up (kind of proved that foreign sales weren't the main reason).

The taxes the NDP put in didn't seem to affect prices in 2018 either, besides that the price went down the same amount as the tax.

What really hit the market was when the federal Liberals put in the mortgage test and raised interest rates. That slowed the housing markets across Canada.

The NDP's promise was to improve affordability. On that they've failed. Its harder for someone to buy a 1 bedroom condo as its harder to get a mortgage and interest rates are higher. And prices of lower one bedroom condos have only gone up since 2017.

PS: This is a political discussion thread so its obvious that conflict will exist. If you think I'm wrong please use facts.

Regardless of who is responsible for lowering housing prices, in many circumstances they have been, and the voters will at least partially credit the current provincial government for doing so. Voters aren't competent enough to be able to punish/reward the right level of government for different things they care about.

Regardless, while I agree that the previous provincial government as well as the federal government have put in policies that have helped this as well, it seems pretty clear that on this file (and many others), the NDP have been doing a reasonable and competent job, and for this reason I think a blowout for them in the next election is unlikely.

It was in Trudeau's platform too, but quickly abandoned. This was the single most important item for the Greens and they would have not supported the NDP without it.

BC Liberals are looking horrible as more comes out about how bad ICBC is, and how much money is being laundered through our casinos (and how the Liberals ignored it).

The economy is still doing fine. As long as there are no major scandals, the NDP will be in good shape next time around. We shall see. They may get more of the Green voters as those voters realize the NDP is doing fine and their votes don't matter as much without PR.

Wilkinson is pretty uninspiring as a leader, and they have too many of the old guard in there, like the NDP did when they lost in 2013.

Honestly it’s all good to say there bad but what has the NDP done to solve it. Raising insurance rates isn’t a smart solution, the Liberals would have done the same. And the first major laundering case got thrown out. So we know laundering is happening but we haven’t solved shit. So you say Liberals ignored it but I say NDP spent a ton of money watching it.

Injury caps are coming to ICBC, that's huge, and probably the single biggest thing to help. Rates need to be more stratified across the range of driver "skill", and of course more education and enforcement will help.

Not sure I'd blame the case being thrown out on the NDP. We still don't know the details. They are working the file in a way the BC Liberals never did. In fact, the Liberals buried a report saying what was happening. That's borderline criminal IMO.

I'm not a partisan at all, just calling it like I see it.

Giving the Liberals the benefit of the doubt did they hide it or just not publicize it? I assume there’s 100’s of reports if not 1000’s that aren’t publicized. And tbh if I was in charge I wouldn’t publish a report that may hurt casino revenues which are good contributors to tax revenues and the economy. As we’ve found if they can’t launder money in BC casinos they’ll pick another BC industry or go to a different province. Least through BC casinos we get a large cut.

Redirecting money laundering causes us losses (which is what the NDP did) as the crime still occurs but we no longer get a cut of the money. Only if we stop crime does the benefits maybe outweigh the costs but the NDP didn’t do this.

JFC. Real Estate/dirty money/immigration/China was literally the #1 issue in this province for years. Pretending it wasn't doesn't change history.

You are clearly a blind partisan.

So let me get this straight: you're okay with people breaking the law as long as we get to tax them?
