Does anyone have any idea on how much electricity would be generated from this kind of project? How would it likely compare to the proposed wind turbine in Diefenbaker park which I'm assuming would be in the 1-1.5 megawatt range?
It's great to see some green initiatives, I'm so glad to see some progressive ideas coming out of our city council!

I have been away from the city on business and holidays and have been checking the posts for updates. I don't see any mention on a timeline for Lake Placid to FINALLY break ground. Was this discussed at all recently? Any potential timeline given?
On another note, my wife and I had put a deposit on a 5th floor (balcony) unit at the 2nd Ave lofts in late May. We ended up not proceeding, as the timing just didn't seem right at the time, plus we knew we would need to do a number of upgrades (bathrooms/kitchen) even though this is a brand new building (they definitely skimped on the bathrooms and kitchen). I recently checked their website and see that a large number of the 5th floor units are still available. Does anyone have any inside scoop on this project? Has anyone moved in yet? Any rumours about what businesses may go into the street level space?

It looks like the efforts of Saskatoon Police Chief Clive Weighill and City Councillor Mo Neault are paying off.
The pair have been pushing to have the provincial and federal court houses and the remand centre, under the same roof as the new Saskatoon Police Headquarters. Or at least situated together on the same plot of land.
Justice Minister Don Morgan says the Saskatchewan Government is willing to look at this idea. But he says the whole perception of "innocent before proven guilty" could be a problem when an accused would have to walk into a courthouse located under the same roof as the police station. "That's a troubling aspect for the public and for the image of justice," he says. "I would like to see something preserved for the independance so the judiciary feel that they are operating independantly (of the police). Having said that, there's certainly some merit in linking some of the facilities where it's appropriate."
Neault and Weighill say the savings by placing all under the same roof could be as high as one hundred million dollars.
People are beginning to occupy the 2nd Ave. lofts. I sold a sofa to a couple who were going on the 2nd floor I do believe. I don't know much about the project but it looks like they ultimatley had funding issues and thats the cause for the delay. In regards to the Justice plaza I feel like it would be a very unique spot to have the police station and courts together but I agree that it really does place an authoritative approach onto justice. I think it would be neat to see the buildings even if they are connected developed in such a way that they look seperate or possibly create a green space and then have the courts across a courtyard??
I wasn't to keen on the idea of developing a whitewater park along the river but it's really starting to grow on me and I think this would be an excellent opportunity to for Saskatoon economically as well as promotionally. The tourism created from this development would be quite large and promising for the city as well it would be a very unique downtown feature for the city. What is the timeline for this project?

The preliminary study of both the hydro power and whitewater park could take a full year to complete, at a minimum.
If both of these projects are feasible and subsequently approved, construction could begin in late 2010 to summer of 2011, I'm hoping ...optimism for the future.
nice shots for the white water park, i have a hunch it wont start till 2011 2011, which is around the time riverlanding is done, but i unfortunately be we will not see it built for a while since circle is being completed, p.s. i believe they already started on circle,

I would say my favorite corner in Saskatoon is 21st and 3rd because of the four historic buildings that share it: the former Eaton's, the Birks Bldg, the Senator and the Avenue Bldg along with the Bez and Midtown Plaza/CN Tower visually terminating the east and west ends of 21st. Four beautiful buildings from a bygone era! I'm sure I'll love the corner even more when the 3rd Ave. streetscape is complete.

I don't have the inside scoop either but it looks like people are living in there. I did hear that they don't have the land titles in place yet and people cannot register a mortgage against the property until that goes through. They will rent the units out to you, but that money goes against their debt and not yours. Sketchy.

How is that even possible? If the units belong to the developer, then the developer is a landlord, and the contracts would be nullified, surely?

Wow! They have made some serious progress on the new Cameco building since I saw it last. In the summer the elevator shafts/stairwells seemed to be the only thing that was really completed, maybe with a few walls just starting to go up. Very impressive!

here's a small but cool project for y'all. The MPS building on 2nd is being turned into two condo units. It could be a very cool space and great to see more intersting housing happening downtown.

Restaurant will complete Preston Crossing phase two

Site work is underway at Preston Crossing in anticipation of completion of phase two of the retail development.
Judy Yungwirth, director of Corporate Administration, said the area north of Preston Avenue and east of Wal-Mart will be home to a restaurant but because negotiations are not complete, she cannot name the future tenant. Those negotiations are being handled by the Preston Crossing developer but the university, which owns the land, has approval on the terms and conditions of the agreement as well as the architectural drawings and landscaping plans for the site, she said.
There is a third phase in the works for Preston Crossing, which generates funds for the university that are directed toward scholarships, but Yungwirth said that stage of the development is still many months away.
