2010-2011 Sun Charters

For those who have not noticed, the first batch of Sun Charter schedules for the 2010-2011 Winter season have apeared. The Sunwing/Signature websites and the major omnibus booking engines are taking bookings for Sunwing/Signature.

From Edmonton, as near as I can make out, there will be Sunwing flights to Cuba(2), Jamiaica (1), Cancun(3), Puerto Vallarta(2), and los Cabos(1). This past season Sunwing had Cuba(1), Cancun(2), and Puerto Vallarta(1), plus a brief escapade to Los Vegas. On the other hand, this passed season Signature seems to have had flights to Los Cabos and Huatalco on Transat/Canjet aircraft which we presume will not happen this coming season.

As we know, there were no Skyservice flights for Signature or Sunquest at all this winter from Edmonton; all their customers were placed on Transat charters. I never heard a good explanation of how that deal worked. This year Sunquest has a new airline (Jazz) but we do not yet know if they will operate flights from out west.

Sometimes the tour companies do not release their schedules until July. One would expect Transat to reduce capacity a bit due to the loss of the Signature traffic, but, on the other hand, during their recent conference call their boss, chastened by poor results, made noises suggesting they would pile on more capacity this time.

Westjet Vacations may continue to add flights from Edmonton, but they are still a small player. I do not expect Air Canada Vacations to do much from Edmonton.

Sorry to waste bandwidth. There is still lots of time for all these musings to turn into silliness.

I think Jazz is going to be using six 757's so my guess would be
- 3 aircraft for Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa
- 1 aircraft for Edmonton, Calgary
- 1 aircraft for Vancouver
- 1 aircraft for everywhere else

I'm curious what AC will do next year. I think the Cancun flight will stay but i'm not so sure about the flight to Montego Bay.

Oh! That is interesting. Curiously, those are the centres mentioned as the gateways for the B737 service Jazz was supposed to serve for Direct Save Holidays. Is that new entry now stillborn, or might they resurface with a different charter carrier?

Just thinking out loud.

Thanks for the info on the DC 9, Bigtime, I was unaware of it having the rear stairwell - that is cool. I have been up in the DC 9 as well as the B727 - fairly similar in noise levels near the back.

The other direction is not an option either... just a wall of mountain.

Everything is OK, as long as the pilots that use this runway remembers that stall speed increases with angle of bank!!

Ken Boerk Twin Otter, I think stalling is part of the landing procedure.

Despite never flying the Twin Otter myself, I really hope that stalling the aircraft onto the runway is not a short field landing technique.

I'm thinking something more along the lines of full flaps, minimum safe approach speed, put 'er down and hit the brakes and props into reverse. One of those backside of the power curve approaches, hanging on the props for the last part in a sense.

The Twotter is an amazing machine (love that Viking is making new ones now) and can get into and out of some small spots!

Twins are some of my favorite aircraft, Been on a number up north. Shared cabins with cargo, a dog team and a Skidoo at some point. one of those aircraft that just seem to be happy in the air.

Greise has a 15 knot wind limit.

Resolute is usually higher, so getting out of Res is the trouble.

If you want white knuckle landings though, Rankin Inlet is usually an E ticket ride.

I just got back from Costa Rica and flew Edmonton-Houston-Liberia with Continental and both Edmonton legs were full in first class and economy looked to be full as well. It was interesting when we deplaned in Houston, a Continental representative had a list of 10-15 connections that people on our flight were taking, the few I saw on her sheet were:

Austin, Texas
Miami, Florida
Cancun, Mexico
Liberia, Costa Rica
San Jose, Costa Rica
Quito, Ecuador

It was great to see full loads in both classes and so many different final destinations. I would love to see Continental service to their eastern hub, fingers crossed for a non-stop YEG-Newark flight.

^I know a number of people who have used the Continental flight and connected to other US and South American destinations.

EDMONTON — Extending transit service to Edmonton’s International Airport would cost millions of dollars and the number of likely riders wouldn’t cover the expense, a city report says.
