No bias here. This project sucks. A dedicated far right bus lane?? At least make it HOV / Bus. And put it in the inside left lane. The steveston interchange got neutered too.

The HOV lane on Hwy #1 was fantastic up until 2019 when electric vehicles along with SOV's started clogging it up. You also have many vehicles trying to cross over 3-4 lanes to get into it which causes congestion and countless collisions at certain points (Cape Horn, Gaglardi, Willington).

But fuck the NDP for stalling on this. Cost us at least 7-8 yrs...

Everyone is likely familiar with this time line
- BC Liberal gov starts construction of new 10 lane tunnel replacement bridge
- BC NDP wins 2017 election, with partnership with Green Party, and cancels bridge project
- 2022 bridge project would have been finished if not cancelled

But more specifically the 2017 election was extremely close, if I remember correctly, it came down to the final count in one riding, Courtenay-Comox. The winner of this one riding would be able to form the next government. It went to NDP with a margin of 189 votes.

So just 189 votes led to this bridge being cancelled and seven years later leaves us in the same as ever situation.

As noted above there was a decision this July to make yet another plan, so.. hurray?

Daily Hive had an article this week on the cancelled bridge.

We could always have the Cons cancel the tunnel and spend another four years replanning for the bridge. Or we could just accept that in this case, something's better than nothing, and get it done soon.

This is simply an abomination when they could let millions go down the drain without batting an eye.

Monthly Status Reports have started to be published starting with September. For what it's worth, here's the construction schedule as it is currently.

It'd be fun of them to add an item to illustrate when the original bridge plan was supposed to be completed!

Well that's all going on in parallel with other stuff. There's no indication in that diagram whether the environmental assessment is on the critical path or not. Given that construction is scheduled to start before the completion of the assessment, one gets the idea that it is not.

lovely.

only 10yrs later, without the bus improvements, without any extra general purpose lanes at rush hour, and only for $1-$1.5 billion more.

what a waste of money.

If the tunnel collapsed right now, how quick do you think the government will act on replacing the crossing?

Excuse the very late response, please. Having lived for a year in England, and having visited it numerous times, I am always struck, when going through the tunnel, how similar in design it is, and the whole 'look' as well, that it suffered from that cramped, underbuilt road system we know today - with a full scale project like the Cape Horn Interchange giving inspiration for more. /// Anyway, having also lived in Paris for many years, I noticed how the greeways of London and Paris differ. // Both cities have a total metro incl outer suburbs of about 12 million. // But the freeways of Paris have more capacity than the system in London . /// The large freeway system of Paris, both the routes spreading out from the city, as often elsewhere, but in addition circles the city, both on the inner 'Péripherrique,' but also the large (double-decked, tunnelled) route A 86, ownws privately by Vinci corporation. // I think Metro Vancouver roadbuilders need to embrace thinking big, and perhaps indorporating ideas like tunnels and better ramp designs. // Our transit is developing well, but the fact is, there will always be individual automobiles, vans, and busses. //// Time to plan ahead and get onto it ASAP and as soon as $$funds allow.

B.C. has yet to accept an offer from Ottawa for 'hundreds of millions of dollars' to build Massey Tunnel replacement: MP

The revelation that Ottawa may have offered B.C. hundreds of millions of dollars for the replacement of the Massey Tunnel, and that the province has yet to accept the offer, has dropped like a bomb on local politicians in Delta.

For years, the NDP government has been pushing the federal Liberals to shell out for the project, arguing B.C. is being ignored by the capital and not receiving the same support as Ontario, Quebec or the Atlantic provinces.

A lack of federal support is also the reason the province has consistently given for not being able to include a second exit out of Ladner in the scope of the project, which is expected to get underway next year with a projected cost of $4.15 billion.

Delta Liberal MP Carla Qualtrough told The Delta Optimist earlier this month, however, that the federal government had actually put “hundreds of millions of dollars” on the table last summer for the construction of the new Fraser River tunnel but that the provincial government wouldn’t take it.

She indicated that the province had turned their noses up at the offer in the belief it wasn’t enough to cover what it believes should be the federal contribution.

I don't think the Province is wrong, this is likely as low as $0.2B out of a $4B+ (likely $6B+ now project), that's absolute peanuts.

At this point I will be surprised if this project remains south of 8 billion.

That 2.5 billion bridge, major highway upgrade, and true rapid bus project that was canceled and would have been open for years now sure it looking mighty tasty!

Almost like a penny wise pound foolish decision to cancel. Though we know that was done to please the Greens.
